I'm a big fan of the tactics genre and this has a pretty solid foundation, but it's missing a few pieces of the puzzle (character customization and items have always been a big part of such games). It's a neat little free thing, but I could definitely see it being a game I'd pay for if it was bigger and better!

I couldn't resist sharing this story...

I LOVE the text-based descriptive combat in games like this. It was my favorite part of DF and it just may be my favorite part of this one, too. But, one thing definitely stands out about Gnomoria's system. I may be wrong about this, but I don't remember DF ever having such good improvisational combat. My poorly-armed gnomes have fought off nasty goblins by picking up crates, barrels, clumps of dirt... anything that can save their little gnomey lives throughout a cringe-worth description of battle that's somehow even more brutal than the most violent modern games... but in a good way... a disturbing good way.

But, one fight was particularly special. A copper-axe weilding goblin got the jump one one of my haulers. After a brief fight, the goblin swung his axe at the poor gnome's neck... and through it. The head fell off completly. Even more surprising, I originally found out about this because they actually took the time in this game to draw a sprite for a headless corpse, and a severed head (hilariously, still wearing his top hat). My guard was rushing to the scene but didn't make it in time. But then, something happened. The head started moving with the goblin. In the spirit of "no freaking way", I dove into my event log and, sure enough, the goblin had lost his axe and decided to fight my guard with the nearest object... my dead hauler's head. That top hat must have been made of lead, because he crushed my guard's chest and broke both of his legs before he finally died. The guard didn't make it, either.

And so, all four of them went to the body stockpile. The goblin, the guard, the hauler, and his head.
