Thank you to all who applied for the role of concept artist. We've had a massive reaction from the community and received far more applications than we had initially anticipated. It has taken us a bit of time to work through all of them, but in the end we did look at each individual applicant in detail.
Those of you who have been short-listed received an email with further instructions for the remaining application process. Unfortunately, not everyone could go through to the next stage and have had to turn a lot of you down. Its always difficult to tell someone they weren't successful, however these things need to be done.
We do, however, wish everyone who didn't make the cut all the best for their future modding and indie careers and hope that we will see them around the community.

Blackout Studios is looking for an additional talented Concept Artist to work on an upcoming modification for the Source Engine.
The role requires the concept artist to visualise outdoor environments and/or biological, humanoid characters.
The mod project is aiming on immersing the player in a deep horror experience with focus on story, twists and atmosphere. Due to the current nature of this mod, we can't give away too much information in this job ad, however more info will be revealed to successful applicants.

I found that modding and being creative with your concepts, regardless of the engine you're using, always requires you to question your ideas. Is it feasible? Is it fun? Will it add to the environment, or will it annoy the players? Having ideas is great, turning those ideas into something playable is even better - but finding out that your great idea somewhat ruined the experience is a real motivation killer.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. I think its brilliant that you're modding, and not just that, but that you're modding on gold source while most of today's developers would rather go for next-gen engines. I'd just hate to see so much enthusiasm, which you have already shown, go to waste because of simple mistakes. Keep up the work and good luck!
hey tnk, just thought I should give you some constructive criticism. First of all, its good to see so much enthusiasm from young Developers such as yourself. I've been involved in the modding scene since 1996 (the good old days hehe) and I have to say I am truly impressed with your drive. It's definitely refreshing!
However, I would really encourage you not to use imageshack as your media host for mod related eyecandy, apart from taking ages to load, it really isn't the most user friendly environment (ie. too much traffic and your work gets disabled). I can understand if you might not want to display your WIP screenshots on your mod profile's image bank, but at least upload them to your user profile and link them from there. It will run much smoother, not to mention cause less hassle.
I also noticed a few spelling mistakes on your work. This isn't really a big issue - especially since english isn't your first language (nor is it mine) - but it does question a developer's credibility.
Your character and feature ideas are definitely on the right track, however, with out wanting to come across like a hard ***, I have the impression you are trying too hard in some respects. For example, using manual over automatic gear changes when driving is great (and personally I think a lot more fun, having driven both), but is it something that would actually add to your mod's atmosphere? If you find that it most definitely will add to it, you should go for it - but then ask yourself if you can simplify it to a point where you have the functionality of manual driving without causing players to get stressed out.
I also don't think that they would force developers to charge for the custom content. After all, in their presentation on the new Battle.net they did say that although they make it possible to charge, they keep out of it and leave it up to the developers. I'd imagine Blizzard might take a share of the profits, as the custom content is developed with their tools and their engine, but I really don't think they'll force a charge.
And them stopping people from creating custom content is highly unlikely, so again..a fine (in my opinion) is out of the question :)

That will not be the case, as you (as the author) have complete control over whether you wish to charge for the game or not. The only circumstance under which Blizzard would force a charge, would be if they didn't approve of the project and the charge would be in the form of a fine unless you stop development, but seeing as they are looking to promote their up-and-coming modding scene, that is very unlikely. So yeah, the final decision whether to charge for the mod will ultimately lie with you. :)

I can't say that i have heard about this before, but it definitely sounds interesting. I'm a big fan of social experiments.
You should do a review on that warhammer 40k tower defense mod once. I thought that had some of the best gameplay in wc3 mods. So much strategy potential, different roles for players, teamwork emphasis and so much more.

I love this shot! Would be brilliant if you could start a career as the warden of a high security space prison. A mix up between prison break and wing commander comes to mind here :D Keep up the great work guys - looking forward to finally playing Infinity!
I like the warm feeling of this shot.. however, I find that with a lot of the other screens of charsons town, the buildings look too "new" - like they have never been used before. I'm not sure which look you guys are aiming for, but at the moment its looking a bit like plastic.
But keep up the good work. I've been looking forward to parallel from the day it was announced!
very nice work, although I think the jump and jab action of the hero with the spear could possibly be improved, as the motion doesn't look that practical to attack from hehe. But then again, this video is from 2006 and hence things may have already been changed. But in any case.. really nice work you've done so far and I'm looking forward to playing it.
this definitely already looks better than hud 2. The grey gargoyles set a nice contrast from the health and mana globes.
I'll also keep a look out for potential replacement items though. If I find anything I'll forward it to you guys! In any case, keep up the great work!

Really like your work and I also forwarded it onto one of our main mappers, as I think combining both of your talents to work on the town Elder's Creek for The Forgotten would really come to amazing results. I think it's safe to say that things are looking quite good for your application :)
Nice news post :) Am a big fan of penny arcade, so will def be looking forward to this. One prob that I could foresee though is the control and handling of the character. From the video it looked liked it was somewhat difficult to properly guide the character through doors. But considering this is just an alpha, it's already looking great! Keep it up :)

well, in relation to the other picture of this media release.. the models look all the same size.
looks good.. will watch..however, the nailgun and holding wood to barricade has been done before in a zombie mod for hl1.

good stuff, i like to see focused groups that also give smaller/less known mods the time of day. And its not just blatant publicity but the features actually cover specific aspects of the modding process. Well done to you. I'm definitely joining and tracking :)
I just played the mod and although it is fun..I think the main feature (2vs2) is also what is dragging the mod down :(
For one there was only one server that had people on it (after I joined it). After about 20 minute wait we finally had 4 players to get the game started. Later on more ppl joined, however couldn't play as all playable slots were already taken :/

the difference is that this is real firearms source modification, whereas the other team merely hijacked the original to make use of the firearms name and lead the community on.

funnily enough even your "old" version of the outdoor area looks far superior to that of most current top mods and even retail games. The "new" version..well there are no words to describe it. Simply amazing.
This mod looks fantastic. Not only does it exhume the feeling of an instant classic, but the atmosphere of the voice acting alone already is spot-on! I will be tracking this! Keep up the great work :)
Fair point, however it usually still is a third party conducting the interviews and the film or video game company uses that footage for promotion.
Although I think its good you're trying to show your appreciation, any project that attempts to do this by interviewing their own members immediately is going to lose credibility. Worst case scenario would be the community disregarding the project as a joke, as they will think you have nothing else to actually promote yourself with.
Don't be offended by this, instead see it as constructive criticism. If you want to show your appreciation to your members, while promoting your project (because, essentially.. that is what is happening) try contacting some of the modDB staff with an interview request, or if that doesn't work you can always try getting a hold of other related communities to see if they are up for an interview. That way you don't lose your credibility, you don't alienate your community, you get to promote your work AND you can show appreciation to your members.
i've tried quite a few of the released (and compatible) mods, but found that a lot of them are quite unbalanced, or still way too buggy for my liking. Am going to wait for more fixed releases :)
yeah, i agree.. I mean.. its unlikely the nords will "make peace" with us, now that they have nothing left. Maybe it could be patched so that when a kingdom looses all of its settlements, towns and castles, that any remaining lords will automatically become rebels of the old faction.
It looks good, but as others have already mentioned before, I too am worried that the small teams will make the gameplay become boring rather quick. There is only so much you can do with a 2on2 and I'm sure we've all experienced it in other multiplayer games, where some gamers are just more skilled than others and are able to take an entire team (let alone 2 people) out on their own.
In addition to that, I am also not sure that having just a 2 player team will really promote teamplay. Sure there seem to be some aspects like helping a buddy up.. but if you really wanted to promote teamplay you'd - for one - need more of a .. well team, really.
But in any case, I'm hoping my worries will be proven wrong when I play this mod in just over 15 days :D
I'm really quite interested in this..Have a question though, could the entry also be a mod of a mod? I have a couple of mods in mind that, in my honest opinion don't get enough coverage.
The nords now have no armies left and no settlements of any kind, however the war still isn't won. Has this happened to anybody else?

i'm kinda stuck in M&B at the moment.. I first fought for the vaegirs, won them quite a few settlements, etc.. and didn't really see that going anywhere, so I decided to go with lady isula of suno and help her cause.. I managed to win over 6 or 7 armies of the swadians, and the swadian rebellion owned everything that used to be swadia, I also had king harlaus as my prisoner (as well as 7 other lords - not only swadians, tho). However, the swadian rebellion still didn't win.. I'd occassionally come across another swadian troop, first see if I could win them over (although by this point, that no longer was a dialogue option)and if I couldn't I'd just eliminate them. But regardless of whether I captured them or nor, the swadians still had 13 or 14 lords left, and so the rebellion didn't win. I ended up getting fed up with it, left the rebellion, and went back to the vaegirs, who were happy to take me back, as well as majority of the towns, castles and villages I conquered from the swadians (although they now were "mine"). In any case, the vaegirs were at war with the nords, who with 984 troops just happened to be in the process of laying siege to my town of wercheg (the battle was already in progress), so I helped defend the town, forced them to retreat, destroyed their forces, and went into the offensive. Their towns and castles shortly fell to my troop of trained killing machines and the nords had no more towns, castles or villages by the end of it. They now still have 2 armies left (the king and i think lord gearth) but they are god knows where...so the war still isn't over. We have 18 armies, they have two. We own the majority of calradia, they own nothing. So what do I do now? I'm beginning to run into the same problem that I had with the swadian rebellion. Any ideas?
just bought fear 2 today, and it is pretty wicked.. I loved the first one, and the sequel (in my opinion) actually manages to trump the original.
I bought it for the pc, and I'd say the last thing it is, is a console port gone wrong, as kut2 had suggested. The only real issue I have with it, is that it doesn't have co-op..and THAT in my opinion is the new singleplayer. The technology is there, the user basis is there, it's been tried and tested..and it works.
But apart from the lack of Co-Op, you should give it a try.. if you'd rather play it safe, pick up the demo from steam.. it's worth every single mb of bandwidth and then some!
hmm it looks ok so far, but the voice acting needs improving. It sounds too basic and not very convincing. The screaming needs to be taken down a notch or two, as that really is overkill in terms of atmosphere. And when the guy speaks it sounds like he's reading off a script, rather than actually putting any emotion into it. Ultimately this makes the entire dialogue come across unnatural and fake.
In terms of overall idea, it looks quite good..making the choice between a dark passageway probably leading to nowhwere safe or facing some &%$! off monster coming your way pumps a bit of adrenaline, which is always something you want in a horror game.
I don't mean to slate your work, as I know from experience that a lot of time would be invested in something like this, but rather see my comments as constructive criticism :)
Keep it up, I'll be watching this.
looking great, as was expected from you guys! :D What you guys have done with the occlusion culling sounds fantastic already. Really can't wait to see this in action. You should release a video of running through the level in wireframe! :)

to be perfectly honest...these guys are putting so much work into this game (not mod..GAME), programming so many incredibly amazing features and those of us who played Natural Selection 1 know for a fact that the gameplay will be intense and non-stop fun.
So if you know you're getting something that in many ways is better than what current commercial developers are coming up with, why kick up such a fuss about spending a few £/$/€??
I am sure that if you put that much effort into a project such as NS2, (and most likely took on costs of your own) you'd like to think that your community is willing to support you and your decision to charge a rather small fee, when put in relation to all the work.
So, stop spreading hate...or simply don't say anything at all, if you're just looking to stir.
Fantastic job and most definitely deserved. Don't pay any attention to the four year olds who don't want to accept that their favorites didn't win.
You deserved it, dead before dawn looks fantastic and in my opinion has been developed to a standard where it could have easily found its way into the actual game, had it been designed sooner (like prior to L4D being released hehe) :P
I agree.. L4D isn't all that, however, what we were initially aiming for, was what L4D is now. At the time we thought it would be more story intensive than it actually turned out to be, and that would have been the only main factor that would have benefited our mod.
But other than that, I agree with you :)

I think this is a brilliant competition. Good on modDB and Dell. Concept Artists play a vital role on any modding team, whether its a case of visualising that much needed atmosphere, designing a futuristic weapon or vehicle, or simply a character model sheet to give the 3d artists a heads up. After all, why else do they say a picture speaks a thousand words!

me too. I love the DK series and was really looking forward to DK3. Would have been wicked. Might just be another game that needs to be turned into mod and call it Ungeon Eeper Tree (for obvious copyright reasons :P)
