Thank you to all who applied for the role of concept artist. We've had a massive reaction from the community and received far more applications than we had initially anticipated. It has taken us a bit of time to work through all of them, but in the end we did look at each individual applicant in detail.
Those of you who have been short-listed received an email with further instructions for the remaining application process. Unfortunately, not everyone could go through to the next stage and have had to turn a lot of you down. Its always difficult to tell someone they weren't successful, however these things need to be done.
We do, however, wish everyone who didn't make the cut all the best for their future modding and indie careers and hope that we will see them around the community.
Please note that we won't accept any further applications after this point. As soon as we have more vacancies, we will let you know!
Thanks to everyone again!
Hello Fellow Modders,
Blackout Studios is looking for an additional talented Concept Artist to work on an upcoming modification for the Source Engine.
The role requires the concept artist to visualise outdoor environments and/or biological, humanoid characters.
The mod project is aiming on immersing the player in a deep horror experience with focus on story, twists and atmosphere. Due to the current nature of this mod, we can't give away too much information in this job ad, however more info will be revealed to successful applicants.
Interested? Simply contact Setis with a sample of previous work and tell us a little about yourself. Just send us a mail to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get back to you ASAP!
Please note: This is not a paid position
(gotta post this in two bits)
I found that modding and being creative with your concepts, regardless of the engine you're using, always requires you to question your ideas. Is it feasible? Is it fun? Will it add to the environment, or will it annoy the players? Having ideas is great, turning those ideas into something playable is even better - but finding out that your great idea somewhat ruined the experience is a real motivation killer.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. I think its brilliant that you're modding, and not just that, but that you're modding on gold source while most of today's developers would rather go for next-gen engines. I'd just hate to see so much enthusiasm, which you have already shown, go to waste because of simple mistakes. Keep up the work and good luck!
hey tnk, just thought I should give you some constructive criticism. First of all, its good to see so much enthusiasm from young Developers such as yourself. I've been involved in the modding scene since 1996 (the good old days hehe) and I have to say I am truly impressed with your drive. It's definitely refreshing!
However, I would really encourage you not to use imageshack as your media host for mod related eyecandy, apart from taking ages to load, it really isn't the most user friendly environment (ie. too much traffic and your work gets disabled). I can understand if you might not want to display your WIP screenshots on your mod profile's image bank, but at least upload them to your user profile and link them from there. It will run much smoother, not to mention cause less hassle.
I also noticed a few spelling mistakes on your work. This isn't really a big issue - especially since english isn't your first language (nor is it mine) - but it does question a developer's credibility.
Your character and feature ideas are definitely on the right track, however, with out wanting to come across like a hard ***, I have the impression you are trying too hard in some respects. For example, using manual over automatic gear changes when driving is great (and personally I think a lot more fun, having driven both), but is it something that would actually add to your mod's atmosphere? If you find that it most definitely will add to it, you should go for it - but then ask yourself if you can simplify it to a point where you have the functionality of manual driving without causing players to get stressed out.
I also don't think that they would force developers to charge for the custom content. After all, in their presentation on the new Battle.net they did say that although they make it possible to charge, they keep out of it and leave it up to the developers. I'd imagine Blizzard might take a share of the profits, as the custom content is developed with their tools and their engine, but I really don't think they'll force a charge.
And them stopping people from creating custom content is highly unlikely, so again..a fine (in my opinion) is out of the question :)
"Blizzard Entertainment may force a price onto the project, requiring those who wish to play SC2:WoW to pay-to-play SC2:WoW first. It wouldn't be a monthly fee though - just a one-time fee."
That will not be the case, as you (as the author) have complete control over whether you wish to charge for the game or not. The only circumstance under which Blizzard would force a charge, would be if they didn't approve of the project and the charge would be in the form of a fine unless you stop development, but seeing as they are looking to promote their up-and-coming modding scene, that is very unlikely. So yeah, the final decision whether to charge for the mod will ultimately lie with you. :)
w00t, rank 1 of all modDB groups all day long. mmm the warm fuzziness! :D
And the winner is...
After four mindblowing games WhiteRa wins the Team Liquid SC II Invitational! He beat TheLittleOne 3:1 and received the 300$ pricemoney. Congratulations WhiteRa!
Thank you for tuning in and don’t forget that we will also be covering the GosuCup on the 4th of April - as always, on www.enterstarcraft.co.uk!
good as always, but what happened to the episode 67 news post?
I can't say that i have heard about this before, but it definitely sounds interesting. I'm a big fan of social experiments.
You should do a review on that warhammer 40k tower defense mod once. I thought that had some of the best gameplay in wc3 mods. So much strategy potential, different roles for players, teamwork emphasis and so much more.
no longer a mod. they went indie last time I checked.
Still a very interesting concept, looking forward to giving it a whirl.
nice one :) already listened to it yesterday, but can't hurt to hear it twice :D
Bah, too early. Will be back later :P
loving the atmosphere :)
thats it! this mod is watched! :)
well it is meant to have human resemblance, so monkey isn't far off hehe :)
good stuff, i like these recaps of the week :)
nice article scott :) was a good read!
looking good.. i like the look of the hud. graphics looking sexy, too. keep it up!
i remember that. has it really been that long?!
the song is called "The Last Man" by Clint Mansell. Also features in the movie The Fountain.
Thanks for the auth. I appreciate it!
good stuff. Casbah was my favorite map on tfc :)
huhu dude :D glad you made it onto the modDB :)
I love this screenshot. The atmosphere created is fantastic! Very nice work, guys!
I love this shot! Would be brilliant if you could start a career as the warden of a high security space prison. A mix up between prison break and wing commander comes to mind here :D Keep up the great work guys - looking forward to finally playing Infinity!
I like the warm feeling of this shot.. however, I find that with a lot of the other screens of charsons town, the buildings look too "new" - like they have never been used before. I'm not sure which look you guys are aiming for, but at the moment its looking a bit like plastic.
But keep up the good work. I've been looking forward to parallel from the day it was announced!
very nice work, although I think the jump and jab action of the hero with the spear could possibly be improved, as the motion doesn't look that practical to attack from hehe. But then again, this video is from 2006 and hence things may have already been changed. But in any case.. really nice work you've done so far and I'm looking forward to playing it.
this definitely already looks better than hud 2. The grey gargoyles set a nice contrast from the health and mana globes.
I'll also keep a look out for potential replacement items though. If I find anything I'll forward it to you guys! In any case, keep up the great work!
I replied to your PM. Really like your work and I also forwarded it onto one of our main mappers, as I think combining both of your talents to work on the town Elder's Creek for The Forgotten would really come to amazing results. I think it's safe to say that things are looking quite good for your application :)
Nice news post :) Am a big fan of penny arcade, so will def be looking forward to this. One prob that I could foresee though is the control and handling of the character. From the video it looked liked it was somewhat difficult to properly guide the character through doors. But considering this is just an alpha, it's already looking great! Keep it up :)
Hey, glad you liked the media from The Forgotten. Keep up the support, we really appreciate that! And come sign up at our new forums (link found on our profile), as we will be releasing news on their before they go online anywhere else!
i'll be watching this space! keep it up!
very nice work on the hud. Its looking good already. Keep up the good work!
Hey Al! Haven't seen you for ages! You alright? How are things going?
I also quite like this one :)We also have four other tracks for in-game sections which we'll demonstrate sooner rather than later. However, first we will announce some big news, which will be very beneficial to TF and its community - So, stay tuned for that :)
I assume you created the subdomain yesterday, right? Good work on that :) I was thinking that we should put in a website with general info and news about the project. Is it possible to set something like that up and connect it with the subdomain? Maybe use that instead of the current flash screen.
Welcome to modDB :)
I replied to your email. I was going to say that it would be great if you could sign up at modDB, but then realised you already were a step ahead of the game hehe. By the time I sent this comment, I will have added you to the team list.
Again, welcome on board :)
very nice looking indeed :) too bad I don't own my copy of UT2K4 anymore - might just buy it again for some fun playtime :)
thank you :) I'm sure the modellers with appreciate the props :)
well, in relation to the other picture of this media release.. the models look all the same size.
looks good.. will watch..however, the nailgun and holding wood to barricade has been done before in a zombie mod for hl1.
but other than that, keep it up.
hehe.. it's titled the army of the undead.. but I only see.. ehm.. well one.. undead :P
hehe pure hawtness :D -- i want to mod on quake some time - just never got around to doing it
Nah, leave them topless, or if anything, just put a very shredded top on. It looks far more terrifying when you see a mutilated and decrepit human body running at you in-game, so the more flesh the better. The horde zombies from L4D looked cool.. but weren't anything close to being "scary". This female (and the male) zombie are a completely different story. They look great and they look horrifying at the same time.
Great work, hannah!
very nice work! :) When I first saw the preview image on the frontpage, I thought it was a Simpsonesque Mr. Burns-like drawing :D
very nice shots :) keep up the great work. Looking forward to finally playing this little beast :)
looking forward to the release :)
oh no of course, but I mean, it'll get mod teams motivated to work that extra bit harder to make the release in time. I mean, obviously if its not up to standard they won't want to release it, if it's going to backfire on them.
whats the latest guys? I've been checking your website and this profile.. and its been months since anything dev specific was posted. Any updates? Looking forward to hearing from you guys again!
any updates :)
the game looks really neat! loved the demo.. but I can't get the game (yet) as I don't have a credit card and steam doesn't seem to accept my debit cards. And my bank doesn't accept paypal or click&buy. Should get my credit card in a month or two tho :) Guess I'll have to wait hehe
"mmm yeah! somebody might enjoy this" made me laugh :D
good podcast. keep 'em coming!
and it should get mod teams motivated to do weekly updates :D
lmao.. it's like sibliminal messaging :D
staying focused/motivated as danpearce had said is the hardest. Inactive members are one contribution (especially if it is in a field you don't know much about - and there is only so much you can do on a massive project on your own, in a realistic timeframe). However I think continued failing of features within the game or mod can also be quite a drag and people are likely to lose focus/motivation thereafter.
once we've successfully finished that feature and perhaps found ways to simplify it, we might post a how-to thread for other modders to do it, too on blackout studios :)
lmao.. just reading the comments. Made my day xD
now does that mean Raindrop is better or equal to valve? :D
amazing! Can I kidnap your concept artist?
this mod deserves to be on steamworks.. in fact, it looks so damn good, it deserves to be made retail with backing by valve. But thats just me rambling on. Can't wait for the release!
the mod is in a state of hibernation. We may release something at a later date, however for now, consider the mod to be asleep.
Oh and before I forget, In terms of The Thing, it's polish :D
love the article. catches a lot more attention than the ordinary news posts. The game is looking sweet too, and to be perfectly honest.. once you get into the game, you don't really tend to look at the graphics, you tend to focus on how much fun your having playing the game!
no problem :)
good show as always. keep it up :)
you could ask the same question about all sorts of other mods. And games for that matter. Why play counter strike when you can play insurgency and vice versa. Why play GTA when you can play Driver?
this has just made me spark up :D
looking good so far, although the office-divider are looking a bit..well out of place. You wouldn't usually see bare plywood pannels as dividers.. its more likely going to be something "carpeted". I don't know the name for it.. but it looks like carpet in a sense. Also, its usually not as tall as it is here.. Maybe lower it a little bit.
And finally, the name sign for Malcolm is relatively big in relation to the rest of the scene. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it :) Keep it up!
I'm a bit skeptical to be perfectly honest.. but I guess we will see. I will continue to watch the project in any case. Whether I will end up buying it is a different matter. Keep it up, though!
