In Sandbox mode you can control units, but it's more of an extra.
We will experiment with vehicles, but it does not have a very high priority.

You can still play the Antlion Faction in Sandbox mode. Balancing the Antlion faction in Annihilation mode would be too much work at this point.
Correct. It should try to install Alien Swarm automatically anyway when you try to launch the mod.
Alien Swarm is free. Currently it does require Ep 2, but that wouldn't change if we switched to SDK 2013.
Even though that engine branch is a newer release, it does not support all (engine) features the Alien Swarm engine supports.
This is not something on our side. The 7z archive should be used for installing.
I just contacted Desura support again to either remove the mod from Desura or fix their bugged client (since they clearly don't care about supporting mods).

Can you start Alien Swarm? Does it give a runtime error before reaching the mod loading screen?

Correct. We use assets from Ep2, so we require the use to own Ep2.
You can launch the old mode with "-disabledeferred" in the launch parameters. For the next release it will also automatically switch back when the settings are on low.

Difficulty settings are planned for the release after 2.3.0. Currently the CPU just spends all money on buildings barracks and massing up balls of soldiers, due which it can be quite strong if you don't make use of manned turrets.
We would need to move over to Source SDK 2013, but that involve some issues (uses an older map format and lacks certain features supported by Alien Swarm among others).
Can you post the log of hl2wars/debug.log somewhere? It contains the log from Chromium Embedded.
Which version of WinRar? I've seen some cases where some extractors don't work properly with 7z files.
It could also be a problem with Chromium Embedded and Vista of course, but I would need to test that out.

Sounds like a bug (or a problem with extracting the files...). Maybe you can launch the mod with "-console -dev" and post the content of the console somewhere?

The mod uses Alien Swarm as mod base and is not affected by the steam pipe update.
The mod won't tell you to update Desura, so if something tells you to update Desura it would be Desura.
