Know what was not really in service?

An Ekranoplane.

At least the design was revolutionary and it wasn't a glorified SAR flying boat plane that saw services in the WWII Pacific front.

Glorified Huh?

Actually The cat was well deserved of it's Rep.

If The Ekranoplan was So practical and revolutionary how come the Soviets gave up on it<? Oh I have that Answer.

It's because it was EXPENSIVE and UNRELIABLE and COULD NOT operate in bad weather or rough seas.

So yeah I'll take a "Glorified" Plane that actually served and had impacts on the war and saved sailor and aviator lives alike then a Boat Plane Hybrid that did none of those things.

Get off the Russian band Wagon and enjoy good planes no matter where they are from.

It worked really well in World in Conflict. Sooooo, yeah.

I have actually been lucky enough to get inside one of these myself. One of the cool things about living the in Pacific I guess.

I do too, don't get me wrong.

Wasn't knocking the Russians at all for trying new things because you need to take risks to move forward. Some times it pays off some times it doesn't.

If the brits didn't try something new with the Jet Engine we would still be flying around in Piston planes and not Turboprops or Jet Aircraft.

((Yes I know the Germans were the first to put it to use but it was the Brits who invented it, and Ironicly sold it to the Germans))

The Ekranoplane was pretty cool, and the Russian aviation/navy did learn quite a bit from it, like Sakura said. But, unlike some military corporations these days (I'm looking at you Lockheed) the Russians let it go, and used these instead 2.bp.blogspot.com

Because Ruskies are smart. :P
