M A N D A T O R Y I N T R O D U C T O R Y

Hello again everyone, this is my second real amateur attempt at "Screenshot Storytelling" blogs in here. There will be 1 or maybe 2 more of these for the Cold War Rearmed 2 mod and overall 6 blogs for the Arma II game. The next one might be based on NATO or WP forces and the next non-CWR2 ones will feature Polish & French armies complete with 1 ending special Screen Storytelling attempt. If I manage to get this far, I will periodically switch games starting with one of the Resident Evil titles.

Everon, 10th of May - 1985. Operation: Flashpoint is in effect.

It has been just a few days ago since this tiny island of Everon quickly turned in to a superpower's battlefields. At first, nobody really knew or didn't want to know what is going on. On the neighbouring Malden a unit of fresh US recruits was conducting their first important training excercise with Sergeant Arnold Berghoff, a USMC nom-commisioned officer currently attached to the Malden garrsion in the from of a drill instructor. During that day an alarm was raised requiring all nearby units to converge to Everon due to an incident caused there by an "unkown attacker". Pretty soon it had become clear for the Berghoff's squad that they were not some kind of a local insurgency of which nobody that high up would really care about anyways. Initial SIGINT & TECHINT analysis of the dead bodies and their equipment confirmed Russian SSR as a place of origin and conclusions had been drawn as to the attackers being either Bulgarian or Russian. Not further informations were sent as the HQ on Malden suprisingly contact with the whole platoon and their support elements following the new day. Rumours had spread about a strange 'Code Foxtrot' order being given. Tensions are rising with each passing hour as the situtions becomes hotter. on the 9th of May additional reinforcements composing of joint USMC/US Army units, the Green Berets, the British Armed Forces and the Dutch Korps Mariner had arrived together taking part in an NATO offensive campaign. Chances for severe politico-military repercussions resulting in a WW3 are high, the stakes are high and nobody even dares to question "are we really fighting the Soviet Army in such a God forsaken place?"

In this cold breeze several sections of British Fusilers moved through Everon's unpaved roads. It was soo much unlike the US or Britain. Nearly 90% of the island was countryside, forests and general uninhabited areas. Population there was restricted to some farms and few villages, the island had a small civilian airport. Nothing else was really worth mentioning in the mission briefings. In just about two days the island was subjected to Soviet military rule. Any and all organized militia or police resistance was killed off, important urban areas quickly seized without even loosing a squad on the Russian side. First responding NATO troops where most likely either snuffed or capture, both being bad for us. This renewed attempt will regain the rightful control of the island to it's people and bring back the beloved status quo ante bellum to the World. The first targets for the BAF contigent are located in a small isolated pocket to the North-East of Entre Deux village. Those are a small group of Motostrielki's in a wrong place at a wrong time with back luck to boot. Couple of section backed by Cheftains from the 5th Tank Platoon will dislodge and neutralize them from their positions, maintaining control of the area in prepartion for the next day. Montignac, the 'capital' of Everon is scheduled to fall before the 15th of May.

In spite of the overall morale not being satisfying enough, the inital breakthrough was sucessful. Thanks to our advanced fire & maneuver techniques and our superiority in camoflauge. Unprepared, possibly panicked Soviet defenders were being picked off one by one. Some tried with no sucess to stall the assault using RPG's. Trooper David was following this fine example by crouching and firing a few rounds into enemy then switching position to a new one. Repeating this drill with the sections.

in spite of the operation looking like a meatgrinder Trooper David was quite happy in where he was. Filled with national pride, a sense of accomplishment, duty and a feeling of being utterly superior against Soviets in this battle. Reports from the squadies kept flowing throughout the radios informing of KIA's. Gunfire from the other side was almost drowned by the sound of L7 & L1A1 GPMG's & SLR's. The situation could not have been simply better for David in his first mission. Twenty minutes later the guns felt silent, the demoralized Motostrielki's laid dead around the sandbags while some were found dead near the forest arguably being transported there by the Cheftains. Why was the American HQ back at Malden soo freaked out?

It became apperant thanks to the radio. Help was on its was from Montignac. The soldiers took their positions around the captured sandbags with the Cheftains keeping a watchful eye on the surrounding hill. Soon David will hug the ground cringing in fear and discomfort, unable to fight.

Mi-17 Hip packed full with Airborne Special Assault troops better known on the Eastern side of the World as VDV Spetsnaz made a dramatic paradrop attempt. The sound that came next was almost or even as bad as getting shot by a Russian AK bullet of fragmenting build. More then a hundred rounds reached each of the parachutes ensuring the loss of use. Even if a parachute didn't break, the VDV fellow using it would had landed unrecognisable. The exact fate of the Hip and it's crew is unknown. Soviet part of the island is being recaptured too quickly, something feels dodgy about this whole invasion.

The enemy air assault had lowered the morale of the unit and forced some of the squadies to procure battle gear from the enemy opponents. The mechanized element soon came, 2 BMP-1P's plus 1 BMP-2 with a T-80UM-ish looking MBT lagging behind. Rushing forward eagerly to test out his new infamous RPG-7 he unfortunely tripped on the way, the squad finishing the task. Soviet counterattack has been repelled with acceptable losses of 1 British soldier per 7 Russian soldiers.

While on the hunt for stragglers in the forest, Trooper David met his early demise at the rifle of a VDV assaulter he tried to flush out through hand grenades. He was the second fatality of section Alpha.

CONTENT USED :

The same as before but now with the latest British Armed Forces expansion addons for Cold War Rearmed 2 total conversion. The mission presented and the others came along with the TC.

NOTES :

In this one I tried to go more with a general gritty and loud combat feeling rather then keeping on the side on philosophy & politics as I did with the first. I know it looks somewhat like an optimisic version of "Eye for an Eye (Winter)" with the screenshots pretty much telling it outright. My next blog will be different and with a bigger meaning as I slowly move away from CWR2 and it's heavy combat oriented missions.

As your final notes say you took a different approach this time. A good one nonetheless. The demise of David was kind of a given when you first mentioned him. An eagerly fresh recruit wanting to take on elite forces with a captured rpg.

That they did a paradrop is interesting, would they really consider that in a hot zone?

In the AI terms the orders were to reinforce the battered troops with speed. They did not consider the well prepared British soldiers hence the failed tank rush and the line paradrop. Still, it was better executed then in some other missions in where a 56 men unit is ordered to preform paradrop but ends up attacked by ZSU's. Plane goes into emergency blasting everyone out before falling down.
