Well, I kinda feel like writing this after playing Kane&Lynch and reading the rewiews so ...
Well, 2 days ago I was kinda bored since I had to waait for some executives to do their job ;D so I went to our local computer shop to look at the computer game department. What I found there wasnt really much, but for the 10 euros that I had with me I bought Kane and Lynch. The boxart was intresting, and although I wasnt really intrested in the game I always liked anti-heroes so... why not? After all, I should support game companies and not only valve and steam :D
When I was home, I installed the game, and after creating a GfW account I started playing. The next day I have already finished the game with the feeling of having just beaten the best shooter I've played so far(besides a few others, to be said). The gameplay was good, a over the shoulder shooter with simple team commands, a lot of different scenarios and a good scripting and mapping job. Good, but nothing really special.
What made it great and special was the story- you could see that on the cover already- Kane doesnt really look like Masterchief or Gordon Freeman. He is a fucking mercenary with a cut out eye and a bloody patch over his broken nose. He's 40 and his hair is falling out, deep creases are in his face, and Lynch has a simply a psycho look on his face...
Those two friendly guys kill hundrets of people in a 8 hour long campaign telling you a story of manipulation, corruption and revenge. What fascinated me about it was the pessimistic and dark approach. This game isn't a hollywood blockbuster, its more of a horror movie. That makes it unique. The firefights remind of the movie Heat but here the bad guys win, not the good ones. However ''win'' is a relative word... I don't wont to spoil too much, but while proceeding further in the game you can understand why Kane gives so much for his family that kill him, why he betrays the7 and why he becomes more and more violent and uncontrollable during the game. Lynch would be a remarkable character even if he would be placed into any other game, but here his uncontrollable, remarkable personality is used so well, that he even grew symphatic to me and I kinda felt sorry for him.. (he shoots people lying on the floor).
Well, after completing this dark and greedy adventure I went online to look for other people who like the game and share my great experiences with the game.
What I found shocked me- the game had a metascore of 67 and most game magazines even said it was a pretty bad game.
Well, I'll just protest, and at least there is a small society of fans ot the game that may share my opinion. I simply think that todays gaming world is not ready yet for games with ''real'' story and it wont be in the near future... While in the 90s there were some intersing games with stories today we got tons of nintendo shit and endless final fantasy stuff...
One thing I decided after finally learning that, is to buy Kane&Lynch 2 and other ''serious'' games (not the brainwashing shit, of course).
Well, now I've written it , and it may sounds a bit like a fanboy, but a part of it is certainly true, and you gotta agree me on that...
