We've been progressing quite a bit with the game!
The character looks and race are fixed. You can select some skills and traits for him, but other than that everything's pre-determined. We're making the current story for white character, but we'd also like to create a latino and black characters with slightly different stories. These would be released as FREE DLC's. Basically it all depends on the resources and if we have the time and money to make these.
I was a bit unclear with my words there - the henchmen would not be random, but people that can join you if you complete certain jobs, gain enough reputation (aryans will offer you a bodyguard if you become important enough for them) or give enough trade goods or money to certain people who offer protection. These henchmen will come especially handy for characters who are concentrating their character development in intelligence.
Every prisoner, even the henchmen have their motives to join your entourage or they are ordered to do so. So there won't be any random magical characters who just pop up to help you for nothing in return.
We haven't decided yet. We will probably offer people chance to do pre-order, either through KS/IndieGogo or from our own web page, and this might include access to beta. We will give our best effort to release a playable demo this year, probably in December. The pre-order will be available around this time.
It's very important for us to include fans in the development process, but there are some downsides in allowing too many people to play alpha/beta versions. The biggest reason why we want to limit this population is the story - we don't want any spoiler leaks before the release.
Maybe change the shooting from left mouse to some key on the keyboard? Without three hands it's kind of difficult to move, jump and shoot.

Unfortunately the core team (me and Tuomas) have full-time jobs, but graphic designer and composer are working full time. We have to work to pay for the assets...
You are absolutely right. I also played a lot of games like Nethack and Adom, only because they were good games. But our goal with Prisonscape is to get as big audience as possible, and for some people the graphics are more important matter.
We're working as fast as we can! Demo will probably come out in 2013. ;)
That is the plan. :) When health goes down, you have bruises and cuts, and when your mental health goes down you'll have saggy and red eyes and look more tired.
