Our PHS_FPS is a high school level indie team from Palmdale High School, Ca. Our video game production class FalconTechStudios, allows students to simulate a real-world production studio experience by working in interdisciplinary production departments to create a multi-faceted, large-scale video game production. Students also work in small teams across the production cycles towards indie production, building a 2D video game based on a current generation game remixed to a different genre. Teams are encouraged to particapte within the indie community and support the use of open-source software. Rules: sprite based, remix of an existing video game. Our decision: Starcraft using the Wolfenstein 3D engine. Ready for one insane ride. I am told there will be fights, ripping hair out, some tears and lots of long nights. We have less than a year, but we can do this. Are you down?

Oooh Colors

phs_fps Blog

Another day in FalconTech working on the ol' game.

Todays mission: more sprites. Wall Textures. Learn to get the colors right.

Woah is it scary to make a yellow and blue picture, import it in flowedit and have it come out red and grey.

Took twenty minutes to figure out how to use a color palette in any program. Figured it out for photoshop, go figure.

2 wall textures and a handful of sprites (about one or two per character working on) made.

A productive day...week...time.

Its Been Awhile

So it's been awhile since the last update. Sorry about that. Life got hectic. For a minute there (actually about an hour) this project was going to be finito. Fortunately we salvaged it. The team has changed and one of the essential members went on IS and the whole class dynamic changed. But we're still here. And still working toward our goal. Learning about the intricacies of sprite design (all holy server god how do you give it a life like movement and appearance????) and basic level creation using a much older engine without a hi-tech cool kid edition (omg I get to see the programming). I have my first mediocre Zeratul sprite. But its mine! Haha as much as a copyrighted character can be. Then again who's able to tell it's Zeratul? I will try to update more often, especially since now there is actual progress rather than just idealizing and messing around with programs to get a feel for it.

The Beginning

So this is blog entry one on this journey of great trials. Thus far we have had great enjoyment in learning to operate essential programs such as DosBox (oh wow, pre-Windows? That exists?), FloEdit, and WinRar--haha who knew getting stuff from school and home required such a delicate process. We have seen inside of what a video game is made of, or so we assume we have. We also did some of the things we are a lot more comfortable with (we both ADORE Photoshop), but in hindsight maybe we should have gone out of our comfort zone in designing the logo--apparently vector is better for that kind of thing, but I've never touched Illustrator. So at this point we feel we have done so much, but only have a couple of pictures to our names. Well, no one ever said this was going to be easy. If using Dos doesn't push us past our limits I tthink we may get out alive, with a video game!
