I'd say if you implement already existing code and have to change a few things you're in a better position than starting from scratch and having a longer dev time after all and maybe even a worse physics engine with mayor flaws.
I'm pretty sure that writing a proper physics engine similiar to Bullet will take you longer.
But lets see what happens, maybe I'm totally wrong here and you have some of the absolutely top coders out there.

Usually the shadows have a slight sky color tint, because the sky emits light too.

if you mean the basic shape of it then have a look at the real one, it's just like that.
hm, looks pretty good and the G-Man voice sounds pretty good, however the background music is a tad too loud I would say.
wow, that looks not so good and has absolutely nothing to do with light scattering.
It's just radial blur of the Framebuffer blended on to the framebuffer.
to make it look better you could convert it into a sunshaft shader, the only thing to change is creating a rendertarget in which the scene is rendered in different colors, e.g. world black and sky white, and apply the radial blur to that.
hm, the smoke should adapt to the lighting in the environment.
but the most common universal language is still english

I've seen mods with less media and more unfrequently updates

hm, I always have a anything of my sites locally, so I don't give a **** if someone hacks a site of mine, though I'm disappointed in our humankind when somebody does hack something in a bad purpose.
the forum of BM is pretty good and if you ask the devs something they also answere, so I don't think they don't give a **** on their community, they only don't give a **** on their moddb profile, because... well it sucks because here are way too many kids

seriously, it won't work like that, there are always lots of unexpected things and counting the content is as useful as counting each sandcorn on the beach and how useful is a percentage that never can give you a real information how much of the mod is done
