I often hear people saying that T34 was crappy tank because Soviets produced 50 000 T34s of which 80% was destroyed. On the other hand Germans produced 9 000 Panzer IVs (with similar loss ratio) therefore it took 5 T34s to destroy one Panzer IV.
This is why I think it's completely crappy comparsion.
REASON 1:
Complete majority of tanks was not lost to enemy tanks but to an artillery, infantry, bombers (sometimes even destroyed in factories), technical problems and logistics. Only very few were actually lost to enemy tanks.
REASON 2:
While Germans had LARGE number of various vehicles to choose from Soviets didn't have halftracks, nor heavy armored cars and other armored vehicles Germans had. As you know Germans used these vehicles (like Sdkfz 251) very frequantly but Soviets didn't have anything like that. Their T34 was universal armored vehicle used as armored car, transport (http://www.vanquishedseries.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/t-34-tank1.jpg), anti-infantry, anti-tank, enemy fortification penetrator and so on. That's why Soviets produced so many of them (and lost so many of them). If Soviets had such large selection of vehicle types like Germans had they would maybe produce far less T34s and lost far less T34s. But since it was their most common armored vehicle used for various purposes they logically lost many of them.
REASON 3:
Saying that there had to be 5 T34s to destroy 1 Panzer IV is crap for fact that T34-85 was able to destroy ANY German tank (Panther, Panzer, Tiger) with single shot (if shot properly). There is even known case where single T34 destroyed 2 King Tigers as far as I know (From back it was definitely capable of it). I am not sure if I remember correctly this claim but it's definitely possible. People also say that Germans said it's best tank so they could justify their defeat. They said that in 1941! These people seriously think that Germans though in 1941 they will loose? Also Otto Carius (Tiger elite) said very warm words about T34.
