I highly doubt Maschinekarabiners were in Africa. It was a secondary front for Germany since they invaded Russia shortly after the got involved in African deserts.

Btw this image is pretty interesting. Looks like Polish trooper. But if it is partisan or Polish Red Army soldier on eastern front - who knows...
