Once upon a time, I was a blogger and amateur modder here at ModDB. Now I return, to report on the latest and greatest mods, indies, and anything inbetween. I am a cynic Christian. I try very my best to be honest, no matter the cost. I am now a freelance games journalist but I still do an indie dev gig on the side.

Report RSS Payday: The Heist review

Posted by on

Where do I begin? Payday is a shooter. Payday is a co-op shooter. Payday is a co-op shooter that manages to ape every bad or basic feature from L4D, without actually retaining the value of the good parts. I will state this now, I loved the concept. Frankly I'm amazed a game like it wasn't made sooner. However, an idea does not make a game good. And dare I say it (and I apologize to the developers, as I am just being honest), this game has no redeeming value. It has no real identity, the acting is silly, the combat is so unbalanced and bad that Duke Nukem wouldn't sit next to it.Now I'm betting you're thinking "wait, you can't just judge a game like this so harshly. It's downloadable. It's only 15 bucks".l I. Don't. Care. Minecraft has better shooting than Payday: The Heist. Section 8 has better AI and its AI will sometimes run in circles. It's like the developers thought that once they wrote the basic game design document, and made a few levels and hastily recorded some audio lines, that they were done. A Pre-Alpha at best should be what this is. I'm just going to end the analogies here and put it plainly: there really is no redeeming value.

Now I see every now and then, a glimmer of what the developers had in mind. There's the option of taking hostages and you can blow up security cameras (not that either really matters at all). The end sequence tries to feel like Mirror's Edge but instead ends up feeling like what would happen if Mirror's Edge had been about linear corridors and shooting rather than parkour. I wanted very desperately to like this game but upon finishing a round not only did the entire event seem abitrary but even the whole objectives setup makes no sense. Why is it we don't just hack the security system, break into the vault quietly, and sneak out Deus Ex: Human Revolution style? Why do we go guns ****ing blazing and throw caution to the wind. Why is there non-regenerating health yet no medpacks? Gah, and we're back to just complaining about sloppy game design.

Look, I think I've made it pretty clear the game is crap. It's unfortunate, but it's 100% crap. Even the multiplayer server setups and connections are, for the most part, bad. They even managed to ham-fist a progression system into a co-op game with already a hundred strikes against it!

Why you should play this: You hate yourself or enjoy pain. Maybe you want a shooter so brain dead you can have a conference call at work while playing it? I'd still sooner recommend Lead & Gold, that thing is so easy there's no ammo limits, you just keep reloading.

Why you shouldn't play this: *points to the above review*

Interesting, obviously I was right to not buy this game.
When I first read the summary on steam I hoped this game would allow you to break into banks silently, Thief / Deus Ex style.
Then I saw the trailer and thought "WTF, this is just another shooter". And not even a good one.

Exactly. Hell even Syndicate (which is about as bullet-hell as Bulletstorm) requires/allows for room for finesse than Payday: The Heist.

Also, thanks for commenting. I enjoy feedback.
