nubblecakes - - 114 comments @ Half Life 2 HD Remastered texture pack

Came across this when trying to mod HL2 for a new playthrough, so I figured I'd throw in my two cents on it.

So far it's a decent compilation, mainly for the textures. I'm not a fan of the new audio for most things. The physics stuff sounds fine, but I personally found all of the NPC stuff to detract from the game. Most of the enemies lost their characteristic sound, or the new sounds were just too hard to hear to begin with. So I removed all of that. Some people might prefer it though.

As far as textures go, most of it looks good, though some of the new textures change the look of certain areas in terms of color and whatnot. It's not that the new textures don't fit, it's just that they don't maintain the same color and tone of the originals. Some of the areas during the airboat sections looked kind of weird with the new textures because they were much lighter in color than the originals. I might have to go back and take a screenshot of those areas for reference.

Additionally, some of the props had envmapping problems or other oddities. So I went ahead and fixed that myself since I have some experience with Source and stuff. The props I fixed so far were props_wasteland/coolingtank01, props_wasteland/barricade001a (002a), and props_wasteland/controlroom_storagecloset001a (001b). Might as well inform you on those, just in case you weren't aware of them already.

Anyway, keep up the hard work, man. Nobody else is really modding HL2 anymore, so this is a welcome project in my opinion.

Ever since I installed this, my game has become very unstable. It will randomly crash to desktop with no errors or anything. Just locks up then shortly after, the game closes out completely. Doesn't seem to be any kind of pattern to it that I can think of to try and narrow it down.

Is there a known issue I'm not aware of? I didn't install the mercenaries pack or anything since I saw that there were issues related to it mentioned in the comments.

Just curious, but what exactly does the "spawn changes" optional do? Does it modify how mutants and whatnot spawn in the zone?

I tried and it also didn't work for me. I may have also modified the bind_stalker.script file incorrectly, but I definitely looked long and hard to make sure it was done right and in the same location as the script file from your mod. Basically, when I go to load the game up, I just get a black screen and the main menu never pops up.

It's a bummer, because I REALLY want this mod along with everything that Complete brings to the table.

nubblecakes - - 114 comments @ In-Game Audio Demo: Indoor Rain (house)

I love sound design. It's amazing how far these subtle details actually impact the atmosphere.

One thing I will comment on - and I know there's still a lot of work to be done - but in my opinion, the player should start hearing the rain hitting the roof a short distance outside the perimeter of the house. It feels too abrupt when it starts to play the moment they enter the house. I imagine that in real life, you would hear the rain hitting the roof if you were around 1-2 meters outside a doorway or some other large opening in the exterior wall of an old structure, like the demolished wall featured in the video. This is especially true if the roofing is made of shanty material like old sheets of corrugated metal (like in the video). Droplets impacting metal sheets would definitely be more audible than droplets impacting modern shingle roofing or industrial concrete roofing.

I'm not sure just how intricate you can get with the SDK regarding sound. From what I gather, there are limitations which are considerably difficult to work around. But I just thought I'd give my two cents on the subject in case it hadn't come to mind for you.

Man, this game gets better by the update. I love how much detail you put in to physics and how the characters react to damage. The blood system is by far the best I've seen in any game.

I'm really digging the fencing style too. It kind of reminds me of Dark Souls and how it has several weapon styles for the many weapons in the game. It gave the game way more depth in my opinion. I think you guys should go for the same thing; from big claymores to throwing daggers.

Being able to constantly wave a sword around does seem a bit crazy. A stamina system could counteract it, but it would probably just over complicate the combat. But a guard break would be cool. If one guy is guarding with his sword and the other is constantly slamming his blade against, it should break, or the player guarding should lose his grip. This would make combat a lot more hectic and raise the skill ceiling a bit in my opinion.

Wow, version 1.05 is definitely good, though it's a lot different from 1.1. I liked the weapons in 1.1 more. There was a lot more variety.

The only bad thing is...I think I already found the best assault rifle in 1.05 (Colt M4a1), and I got to 150,000 RU by the time I made it to the scientist bunker.

Does the installer let you choose vanilla graphics (for lack of a better word)? If the visual overhaul is anything like Atmosfear, I won't be able to run this mod due to the sheer amount of hitching it will cause for me. All I want is the overhauled gameplay essentially. I don't need ultra resolution textures and a hyper-increased view distance. Those two things are probably what cause my computer to hitch so much. I can play vanilla CoP just fine.

I think my favorite kind of environment in Stalker is really thick fog, with or without rain. I remember playing Atmosfear for a short time and there was a serious amount of fog at one point and the dynamic depth of field effect worked so well with it. It was seriously ominous looking.

One thing I want to mention is how the controls work. I personally found the default control scheme a bit confusing so I remapped it. However, I can't seem to find a decent key to map jump to while being able to maintain fluid movement and attacking.

I tried mapping jump to the space bar, but it had some crazy effects. I was playing a match on the Excitebike stage and every time I pressed space, all the characters were placed the bottom left corner of the level and it spawned a bunch of dirt bikes! It really confused me at first but I assume you use it for development purposes? You know, maybe to test stage events or something?

When you get further down the road with development, you should consider making the "up" command also act as the jump command, if at all possible. I figured out I could just bind both "up" and "jump" to the up arrow to get the same effect, but other people might not think to do this. Just a thought, that's all.

Anyway, great game. I really like the awesome selection of characters. Bomberman is fun!

Oh wow. I love Jon Hopkins' "Insides" album. Did you base the name of your game on his track called Vessel? Or is that just a weird coincidence?

I feel so jealous. You get to play around with his songs in FL Studio!

I'll definitely pick this game up on Steam when I get the chance. It looks awesome.

Man I can't wait for version 1.2. I tried playing OGSE since the english version just came out, but the guns are just so ugly. I'm so nit-picky about guns now, especially the animations.

Plus, they add a lot of stuff to the game that makes it feel kind of convoluted in the end. It's a cool mod, but I like LURK more because of the moderation it has.

I think I'll just use version 1.0552 for now.

Heh. Got radiation poisoning and died. I didn't know what to do. I saw a bunch of text appear on the screen talking about it, but I didn't have time to read it all before I died.

The worst part is I forgot to quick save so when it reloaded, I was back at the beginning of the game. Oh well.

PS: Would installing a 3rd party package of reanimated Stalker weapons conflict with this mod? I know this mod adds a lot of custom weapons to the game so I thought I'd ask. This pack I speak of affects ONLY the vanilla Stalker weapons.

Weird. It worked fine after I reinstalled the whole game.

The only issue I was getting pre-play was the OGSE configuration tool not being able to locate the main game config file. I wasn't able to interact with the advanced graphics options because of this. That's all I was asking about. But I fixed it so no problems now. :D

I always install my games in Program Files. My account is the administrator account and I run everything in administrator mode anyway so that shouldn't matter. Do I install this mod in the main game folder (where the gamedata folder is located)? If so then that's precisely what I did.

I know you said the installation instructions were located in the release article, but I can't find this article to find the installation instructions. I ran the installer and installed the mod in "X:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl\." Is that correct? I don't think it is because the advanced graphics options in the configuration tool are deactivated because it "can't find the main game config file"

One other thing that is often neglected with weapons is the sound. A beefy fire sound goes a long way in making a gun seem powerful.

Never mind. I figured it out. Turns out a couple of sounds I put in to the game were the wrong sample rate so it was causing the game to crash. Converted them to the correct rate and everything works great.

After installing this mod, I get a black screen when it gets to the tail end of loading after starting a brand new file. I've tried in DX9 and DX10, and with and without the -noprefetch launch command. I also made sure the game exe was large address aware. No dice. I googled the issue but only found a couple of threads about it that got zero replies.

I REALLY want to play CS with this mod, so does anyone know a solution to this issue?

Never mind, I found the script file. I disabled bloom and the tonemap feature to see what would happen, but it makes everything look pretty bland so I just re-enabled the tone map. The bloom makes the edges of geometry and transparent textures (especially leaves on trees) look really fuzzy and it messes with my eyes.

I really do hope you guys plan on totally overhauling the visuals with the next update so it looks more vanilla (but prettier). The recent video looks pretty promising. Could use a bit more white balanced in to it though. It just looks a bit over-saturated in my opinion.

How do you disable HDR? I like HDR and all, but it causes so much obvious banding in the sky in this game that it's not worth it.

You should make a revolver for this mod. I think the MP 412 REX in particular would fit pretty well. It's a Russian weapon after all.
