For the version available here, which is a version from last September, you need UT3. But this is a very old version. The version that's coming to Steam shortly will be a fully standalone game made in the UDK.
I hope that answers your question.

Thank you for those kind words, Anthony!
I hope you'll get a chance to see it in action. It looks even better within the actual game!
And it's also moving away from being just a mod, and developing into a fully standalone version.
I'm glad to hear ;) Make sure to share your feedback when you do! We want to know what you'd want from the full version of Sanctum :)
you're correct about us not having to write all the actual net-code and such. But we'd still have to re-work much of the current code so that it actually would work in multiplayer, as it has not been on our minds up till this point. We simply didn't have the time nor reasources to do everything multiplayer compatible from day one, and therefore a decision including multiplayer could mean a lot of work.
That is however something that would have to be investigated further if and when it turns into an option.
Thank you, limagic.
It makes me sincerely glad you feel that way. And rest assured we're making our best to supply you with the best possible.
I can do nothing but agree with you entirely. But sadly we'll have to factor in all the time spent and how we're going to reach out to enough people interested in that, also we have the unfortunate fact that we have to make a living.
But certainly, I'm in no way closing the possibility for that. But if it would take us, say, half a year longer just to add (Plan, Code, Model, Texture, Animate, Balance, Balance, Balance etc. etc.) multiplayer, it'd better be certain it pays off, else we could be in trouble.
However, rest assured that I've taken note of your feedback.
Sadly it does not have multiplayer as it is now. And unless we get a huge amount of feedback asking for added multiplayer support, I doubt we'll be able to supply multiplayer even for the full release of Sanctum, at least it hasn't been planned as of yet.
Though we'll be basing our continued development on the feedback we get.
It's "remade" in the UDK, yes :) so it'll come out as a standalone on Steam.
It'll be a complete standalone when it comes out as a demo on Steam :) So just hang in there a little longer and you'll get to enjoy it without Unreal Tournament 3.
Oh you'll see plenty from us in the beginning! I look forward to hearing what you think about the Demo. I promise you there are massive improvements from the alpha!
Great feedback, highly appreciated!
Yupp, and even dynamic health bars ;) But those are activatable in settings.
Hehe, I'm glad to hear that, ilovednb.
The plan is indeed to go commercial in a bit of a longer perspective, but right now we're aiming on checking what kind of reception a free Sanctum demo would get from the player base. If we get a positive response and people ask for more, we'll make a serious attempt at going commercial.
This will be a free demo of the commercial game. And this not yet a final, bugless version.
There indeed is a vending machine for weapons ;) You can see the upgraded weapons in action in the video.
This video is indeed without sound and music, by intention. We were only showing off what Sanctum looks like. However, do not despair, a new full trailer is coming very shortly. It will show off things in better ways and with full sound and music.
That should be correct if that's the folder where you're UT3.exe is located. What happens when you try starting it?
If you have the steam version, you can simply add "-mod=..\Sanctum" as a launch option for Unreal Tournament 3.
Other than that, everything in the readme file should be correct and work in the absolute majority of cases. I hope you manage to figure it out, if not, I'll gladly try helping you some more.
Hehe, great that you pointed it out. It got sorted out today during our porting into the UDK-engine. We're working hard on improving several aspects of the game, including feedback and purely graphical assets!
If you have any other comments, feel free to let me know!
This is my personal layout for the maze ;) If you have one you think is better. Feel free to show it off or tell me about it!
Congratulations to all other winners and contestants :)
I'd also like to point out that the competition isn't exactly over yet, as there's still the Grand Final to be announced in February.
Thank you :) Expect more in the future with additional enemy types and levels. We have more in store!
Thank you, and that we are :) We're hoping for the press release to go out and for websites to update accordingly!
Thank you for the great feedback and the positive remarks. It's always motivating to hear feedback, positive but also the negative sides. I'm not quite sure what you mean about the lack of calibration and the reaction to shorts fired. If you feel like, try to elaborate so I can give you some more accurate response to it.
I can also say that what you're seeing and playing is the August release. we have many many new things already sorted out but also plans for the future. Many feedback issues have been resolved or improved along with both gameplay and visual updates. There are plans for at least another weapon, but even now there is a grenade launcher upgrade for the assault rifle.
It's great to hear that you are interested in the mod and we will do our best to continue the development of it, even though it might not happen straight away, as we're all very busy with our last year of school (Thesis mostly) and some other development projects we have planned.
I can however honestly say that our plans are definitely to continue the development of Sanctum to the point that it's high enough quality to be a commercial release!
The third wave is in no way impossible to beat. And this is quite an outdated version, sadly. We have a new version in store, just have to squish a few bugs and we'll hopefully release it publicly. You'll see many improvements, such as upgradable towers and weapons, new enemies and so on.
Sounds like some great initiative and I'm sure you can get far if you just put plenty of effort in it! Just don't expect it will be easy, as it tends to really not be. But in return you learn a great deal and you have a huge amount of fun on the road.
Also, the Unreal engine is a great choice. If you're going for a Total Conversion then I strongly advice the UDK engine. But if you're more for working alone/not intending to do all the content yourself, then modding for Unreal Tournament 3 is a better choice.
Best of luck and I hope to see some great stuff from you in the future! I wish you all the best!
Sounds utterly interesting. I'll make sure to check it out to see if it fits our needs as well :) Good job.
I guess it goes without saying, but I'm also interested in a beta key. Best wishes.
What's wrong with the AI? Are you referring to the video or actual in-game play? I re-watched the video and couldn't see any bigger flaws in the AI. It would help if you were more specific.
It sounds like quite some generalizations to claim that "Both males and females don't mind playing the other sex in a game". And that is directly proven wrong by Zedrion's opinion above. My guess would be that the reason for females having a "higher percent" probability of being willing to play males would be due to the fact that most games up to date have had that as the sole possibility. And if that's the case, you either have to adapt or you don't play games, simple as that.
I see your point about allowing both male and female characters to be played and maybe that will be a priority later on but it has not been one yet. It takes much time to make concepts, make the models, textures, rigging, animations, voice acting, implementing, allowing for a choice of player model and other things. And in the end that won't be worth the time invested at this point. As we're very driven by the deadlines of Make Something Unreal Contest and do not base our game on "selling", we can do whatever we find fitting and most valuable with our time.
So don't take this wrong, we value your input and feedback greatly. But as it is now, we can't be spending a massive amount of our time on something that won't be "worth" the end result.
There is a very big possibility of that, yes. :) It's all very new still and we haven't had much time to play around with the UDK yet. But there are definitely discussions about making Sanctum a stand-alone commercial game but also to try making other kinds of smaller games in the Unreal 3 engine :)
Right now we're in a crunch for the Grand Final of the Make Something Unreal Contest and won't be able to focus any of our energy on the UDK, but after that we'll investigate how much work is needed to port it over to UDK entirely and continue our work there. We'll be working 09:00 to 00:00 all week by the looks of it, so great progress will hopefully be made this week. We have several interesting new features since the last public release. So stay tuned :)
