What operating system are you running? Windows Vista? Make sure that the launcher is run with administrator privileges. Also try turning off UAC. It's a bit cumbersome helping you out here in the commments section, but if you continue to have problems, go to our forums at Forums.fsmod.com and create a thread.

Just unzip the content wherever you like and run the launcher.

It might be your version of BF2142 yes. Do you have 1.5?

Hmm. I'm using Firefox 3 and the Battlefield 2142 category is not clickable, it doesn't roll out. Works fine in Opera though.

Make sure you untick all the options in the server browser except 'Same Mod'

Do you have the latest version of Battlefield 2142 installed? (that's 1.5)

It could be a faulty install. Try reinstalling First Strike.

Are you on Vista? If so try running the Launcher as an administrator. If that doesn't work, try deleting the zip files fsbuild_1001 to _1004 in your Battlefield 2142\Mods folder, then running the Launcher and updating again. There's usually some people on around 22-02 GMT, more so on the weekends. And the weekly Community Games on saturdays draws a pretty good crowd.

There is no virus. Your antivirus might be reacting to the Launcher application, as it connects to the internet and modifies your First Strike files so it can update the game. Just tell your AV program to ignore the warning.

These files are only needed if you're a server provider and want to setup a First Strike server. If you only want to play, download the 1.3 client installer.

You need to have Battlefield 2142 installed. If you have it, and have downloaded the First Strike installer, just open it and follow the instructions.
