" Death Race " ( 1976 )

If you've never heard of it I wouldn't be surprised, but it was one of those games which served to help forge the path to all the gaming gore and violence we all so dearly love today ( by default of course).

The " Death Race " arcade game ( based on the awesome 1975 movie of the same title ) was released by Exidy in 1976. While not the first violent video game to appear, it holds the honor of being the first video game inspire so much controversy in the U.S.. It also inspired the first-ever organized protests against a video game here in the states. There were even stories of the consoles being dragged into the street and burned ! Nice !

The idea of the game was to simply run a bunch of critters over with a car ( one steering wheel included ), for which you were rewarded with a tombstone you tried to avoid hitting later on as the game progressed - nothing wrong with that.

The interesting point is that it wasn't the violence in the game which led to press bashing and public opposition - it was the clever sound effects used. Apparently the screams and death cries of said critters was so well done that all kinds of people wanted the game banned. Today that would be a fine PR badge to be wearing indeed !

I guess only about 500 or so of the arcade consoles were produced, so would it be cool to get you hands on one or what ? Yeah, fat chance ! But I'd love to play this just to hear those " enragingly offensive " sound effects which caused so much trouble back then.
