Q3knockOut

Mod review

I really don't understand the lukewarm reception for this mod. Let me put it this way: This is basically Quake meets Smash Bros. Whats not to like? It's fast, it's crazy, it's fun. Don't try to play this like a normal Quake game, there are subtleties that makes this mod extra awesome. This mod does things to balance things out, such as:

-You start off with a bunch of weapons and most of the items are replaced with ammo pickups.
-the powerful weapons have very little ammo to start with.
-The BFG spawns where the rail would be except its only got one round, so make it count.
-the shield powerup now saves you from falling into the void by teleporting you to a safe place :)...the list goes on

Bassically, learn the mechanics, don't play on a stage that does not have a lot of bottomless pits (in short, play on the space maps), play on teams!(way more fun, but you will need to modify the game to allow for space maps in team deathmatch, or download other space maps that is team compatible), and finally...ROCKET JUMP A LOT, you will not die from anything that isn't falling off of a map.

10/10 ^_^

Gary - Snowy Secrets (A Christmas Special)

Mod review

So this was a pleasant surprise. A comical custom story? What a brilliant idea! This mod has a lot going for it: The comedy was great and actually funny! The story was original and engaging! And the voice acting was extremely entertaining and well executed. Granted it would be nice if there was a warning of strong language, and yes I know, this is an M rated game but custom stories aren't necessarily M rated because they're their own games that happen to use assets from Amnesia. The scripting was done really well, it was hilarious when your character jumps in the air with fright when the dreaded Christmas coal appears XD.

So why am I giving this Custom Story an 8/10? Well, unfortunately there are some negatives: The levels are very generic, like, really generic. There is some bad use of fog when outdoors (the fog needs to be the same color as the sky), the dust particle effects are a bit exaggerated. And although the lighting was actually quite good, their color however was a very undesirable white light even if the light source was coming from an orange torch, thus making everything look and feel a bit flat and artificial.

Still, had a good time with this one. It was short, but I don't believe it's an issue because I prefer quality over quantity.

Level design was great. The audio was okay. The voice acting was very good. The adventure was memorable. I really liked the branching paths, it's great for a second playthrough.

The story was good and easy to understand, Although, it was a bit cliche. Your character committed a horrible act and now he wants to redeem himself yadi yadi yada We've had this a lot in many horror stories. But my biggest complaint is how there seems to be multiple paths that are heavily emphasized to lead to different outcomes, but they don't. They result in the exact same cutscene that abruptly ends leaving me puzzled as to what just happened.

A lot of people keep saying that the mod was too short. But short mods aren't inherently bad. The problem is, bottom line, There was to much build up and not enough closure.

However, me feeling empty at the end truly is a testament as to how good this Mod was. I was disappointed at the end because the first 90% of the game was incredible. 9/10

The Mansion 1408 [Cinematic Mod]

Mod review

An interesting story with an intriguing premise. The levels were brilliantly detailed with fantastic lighting. I was particularly impressed at the many ways that you adapted certain objects for the decorating of rooms.

But there were a few issues. First thing I noticed was how slow I was moving, it's boring and tedious just to get from point A to point B. Check points would be nice as well since I died near the end. So if I wanted to just replay the last mission I would have to play through the whole game again. Doing the same thing over again is not fun especially when I'm moving at a snail's pace. Some might justify this by saying that this CS is short, but to be honest, if the game has more than 1 level you should have auto saves.

Speaking of which: This is a short CS...and there is nothing wrong with that. CSs don't have to be long to be good. The music really works well, except, at times, the music was too bombastic for what was happening on the screen. A few other minor nitpicks but ultimately I thought that there was a good amount of talent that was put into this CS.

Great atmosphere. Good map layout but the level design was kinda okay. voice acting was ok too (but with some bad microphones). Ultimately: A good CS for anyone who is new at playing Amnesia.
