Yep, it's a joke. To give some context, it's a "two can play at this game" sort of response to MechWarrior Online's rebranding to MechWarrior Online: Legends. Our branding's gonna change back to its original state shortly.

LL2's aim - for the time being, at least - is to recreate MWLL in a much more stable and modern engine. It has been said, though, that singleplayer or a "bot mode" would be a nice-to-have further down the road.

Sorry about getting back to you so late, but you'd probably be able to pin down the issue better over in the tech support channel in the MWLL discord, at Discord.gg

Crashes to the desktop do tend to happen, but one step you can take to minimize the chances of it happening is by ensuring you are not using a game resolution higher than 1920x1080. CryEngine 2, being as old as it is, doesn't like to play nice with higher resolutions that more modern technologies can support. At least, not always.

Even though moving to another game engine - like UE4 or Unity - would be awesome, it is not something within reach, as there are legal (licensing) issues in the way. Though this project's creators have allowed us (the community) to continue working on it, we are allowed only to *expand it further* - this cannot be stressed enough. Moving to another engine would indeed require a complete reconstruction of the whole project, as Alex626 pointed out. The project would be something totally different in all but name at that point, though probably even the name would have to be changed, too.
Also, despite game assets being accessible and modifiable, in their current state they would not be fit for use in modern engines. Most assets are designed with CryEngine's way of working in mind (which, honestly, is *not* especially optimized compared to more modern engines) - which thereby means these assets will come out looking quite low quality in an engine like UE4. These assets would have to be redone themselves, in addition to the coding that comprises the underlying game itself and other related aspects (e.g. launcher, keymapper).
Keep in mind, we're working with technology from over a decade ago. *A lot* has changed with regards to game development procedures since CryEngine 2 came out. The only hope to make development easier would be to get access to the CryEngine 2 source code, but we have been denied it.

Yes, this mod is still alive and populated!
It started development sometime around 2008, and progressed a good deal until late 2012/early 2013. Around that time, development by Wandering Samurai Studios completely stopped (for more info on that, the following segment of this video gives a pretty nice explanation: Youtu.be), and the mod floundered for the next three years while its playerbase dwindled and GameSpy (the server lobby service) was shut down. However, in late 2016, development was restarted by the community, with permission given by MWLL's original founders. Since then, development has continued at a fairly steady pace, with lots of fixes and content implemented (and planned!).

There isn't a singleplayer mode (unless you count using the - currently broken, but soon to be mended - Sandbox 2 Editor), but there is a Free Testing server, where all players have technically unlimited cash and access to all vehicles.

Welcome back to MWLL!

Outside of weekends, we usually see about a full server throughout every day, though that tends to fluctuate. However, right now seems to be kind of a downtime. Weekends see the Chaos March event running, filling up another server. Biggest population spike tends to be around 2100-2300 UTC. You can always check out the population data here: Stats.spikx.net, and we also have a discord server (at discord.me/mwll) with a channel that shows which servers are populated.

Get ready for quite a different game than what you played before, btw. There have been a *lot* of changes since the days of 0.6 and 0.7 :D

Thing is, we're not WSS. We're all members of the community that have come together to continue development from where WSS left off.
A persistent campaign would be nice, but we lack the manpower to pull that off, and it currently isn't within the scope of development. If we had more people working with us, and had the human resources to allocate to a project like that (alongside MWLL's multiplayer aspect), we'd totally go for, though.

MWLL is multiplayer-only (that was the previous devs' main goal, and remains our main area of focus as well). Singleplayer's not something currently within our scope, however nice it would be to have. If there were more folks looking to make it a reality (and that means to actually work on it), we could start thinking about implementing it. Maybe someday it could be done, but we can't go about making promises right now.

Unfortunately, third-person isn't something devs are planning to add. It will let give folks a bit of an advantage over those not using third-person, like not having to actually crest a mech over a hill in order to peek at what's on the other side, and instead simply using the third-person camera to do the same thing. It's nice in singleplayer games, but implementing it in multiplayer becomes an issue gameplay-wise. Third-person used to be a feature in the older versions of MWLL, though.
