MrDev - - 59 comments @ DIY Lighting for Self Promotion

Proper 3 point lighting would be two on either side of the subject, adjusted so that the subject isn't getting washed out with a main light over head. Since most people wont have the money to spend on a proper studio with a huge soft box over head. You want to point your strongest lighting at the ceiling. This will reflect and diffuse on the subject.

As for your two side lights, I've always loved this DIY project.

Alexcampagna.blogspot.com

Replicating his lights ends up coming to about 40-45ish with the diffuser and I already had two spare light stands I use for backdrops and extra strobe stands. I did a slightly different spin on his junction box, I used dead PSU's cases to make mine which allowed me to use standard PC power cords.

INtense, perhaps this is being over thought.

By playing and seeing a game you develop an opinion of a game. If some one submitted a game but the only screenshots of the game are of the torque engine as it's delivered. This game could easily filled as incomplete and needing more development. Same could be said of a game littered with screenshots of completed levels but the gameplay or ai were incomplete. I think there is fear of a bunch of RPG maker games showing up or mods that only re-skin a game. I don't think this would be an issue to tell these types submissions that they aren't a complete enough project to warrant being accepted. People will be taken a hand in the approval process and can tell when this type of content is showing up

Requiring that the product must be at a playable state makes gauging the polish easy to manage. Polish dives deeper than how much content is there or how well done is the content. Are there convoluted steps and additional tools required to set up the game? How difficult is it for a new player to become acclimated to the game?

Games that are purely not ready can easily be spotted. Just to name a few tail tell signs:
- Place Holder graphics (Goes hand in hand with inconsistent quality)
- Inconsistent quality (one level looks like it had a month spent on it where the next looked as if it had been thrown together the night before.)
- Hangs in game play (In order to proceed player must perform X action, but the player was never given a hint to do so, which leaves the player confused)

Examining that alone should help weed games out fairly, and if a developer doesn't clear that you can point out the flaws and tell them if those problems are resolved they can resubmit and be reconsidered.

You also posted "suitable for our audience" why not require developers to submit to a self rating system like TIGRS? Rather than say suitable be more descriptive about what content is in the game?

MrDev - - 59 comments @ Desura is opening up

Mods really need this expansion, I remember days of old when the only way to find out about mods was word of mouth from other players and visits to a game specific site, with the changes in the PC community where the modders have begun supplementing the commercial side. Having a collective showing what all is out there it helps the consumers and producers find each other.

Mean wile you have "gaming" websites touting that PC gaming is dead except for causal games and MMOs... I think not. The community that stands behind pc games has always been here, and will continue as long was we want it to. hardcore supporters you find here are not your casual xbox only players or people playing farm-ville.. We're dedicated, and passionate. If we weren't, would the gaming industry really have become what it is today without the hard core supporters?

I remember a few years ago when I asked INtense if he had plans for supporting Homebrew developers on Moddb. He delivered and great dual platform games have risen to the call serious projects for hijacked hardware become popular and thrive.

Biggest thing I'd be after is an option for voice, cause who has time to type when you're parading around in your awesome custom kart?

Perhaps a tournament mode? where you pick 3 maps of one game mode or mix it up. Should make for a more fun get together with friends.

I'd like you all to step back and take a look at the counter-strike split.

be it the 1.5/1.6 conflict or the 1.6 vs Source, the game play changes created a great deal of fuss in the community. In the end I understand this will cause a split but it can introduce some great things to the game and the community. without destroying current game we love.

The technology is much more similar than when the 1.6 vs source split and there is a great enough driving force in the community do develop for both versions.

Just tested this myself to confirm that it works on its own and with mods. Even if your machine isn't nvidia powered I'm sure you can create an account and register on a friends computer :P

MrDev - - 59 comments @ Changing the Game... on Consoles

Null, Take a moment please, For the most part I completely agree with you

but if you consider the typical map types you have with Farcry 2 that works out quite well, keep in mind the map he made was utter crap but it took him 10 mins, I'm fairly sure there are plenty of fine tuning things that he didn't get into. It works for this game, its very blunt and you will in the end have a load of cookie cutter designs that will eventually fall out and die but there will be a few well made levels. I think its a good Farcry 2 editor... it wont work in many other applications though.

Let the consoles have their cookie cutter levels, We still have valve, Infinity ward, and for now... Id. We will prevail...
