Games like gaylo and whatnot give you no choice on what to do. Half Life as a series has been one of the most open world styled ones to date. I'm talking straight FPS here, not MMOFPS / FPS / RPG hybrids, but as a pure FPS, it gives you alot of room to tackle things and choose where to go and whatnot.

I don't use a 700$ monitor.

Mine was 555$. It's a S-IPS, 27'', 1440p, 120HZ monitor. It has no scaler, so low response time and little input lag.

For about 320$ you can get a normal one, without the 120HZ. They use the same panel as a Dell U2711 or a Apple Cinema Display. For alot less. They are the rejects, A- Panels, but people have compared the two, and unless you sit 30 cm away from the monitor, you can literally not see the dead pixels. Some have backlight issues.

There's a plethora of them, but I wanted 120HZ, so I sprang the extra cash.

One of the best purchases I've made. Such a cheap price, I paid 369$, 4 years ago, for my 24'', TN.

I put them side by side...and's stupid, I can never go back to TN. The colors on this, it's an 8-bit panel...

It's absurdly awesome...1440p has double the pixels of 1080p, so it is a large upgrade. The color accuracy makes it worth it the most, I think. Colors show what they really are...TN panels are often 6-bit, dithered to 7-bit, not displaying more than 256,000 colors. This is true 16.7M colors.

I was on a website, that for years, I thought was white. Turns out, it was grey. Lol.

As for how many people use them? Tens of thousands, I'd say.

I know they have costs to cover; I want them to do well, I've followed the mod since it was first released and played it alot.

I was super excited at a possible 14.99$ or 19.99 price-tag.

At 29.99$, not so much. I have no doubt it'll be very fun.

But at that price point it simply won't sell.

And their fanbase? Responding to Darklord. Sorry. AoC has a fanbase, no doubt, not a larger one. NS had one as well, years ago, it is a fraction.

Both dev teams need to realize, sure, it's not fair...but there are expectations with Indie devs.

UW went crazy and I don't really care if they go belly up. They decided to make a complete AAA Engine, with little to no budget, even though they had a Source version they could have finished, then with NS3, they could have done an engine, with proper funding.

They've missed release dates several times. Their costs are far greater than C:MW's team as well.And yes, they now manage a 24.99$ price.

It's close, but the 19.99$ price tag has made many games a success.

Killing Floor was one of them. IT was hailed as a 20$ wonder, that people who didn't want to shell out for L4D1/2 could enjoy.

However, let us look if KF had decided to go 30-40$, nearly L4D's price, do you think it would have sold nearly as well? Not at all...would it have been a worse game? No, just not a good enough game for the money.

Look @ RO1, sold excellently, @ 14.99$, but RO2 was 39.99$ and sold like crap. When it went on sale for 19$, it sold more copies than release by 2x!

Go for quantity! The lower the price, the more people that will "Eh", buy your game because of it, the more people that can spread the word, the more sales you'll get, sell more, at a lower price point, and more profit in the end, as well as more publicity.

This kind of price just isn't right...

You want your first title to sell a lot of copies, at a low price point, simple marketing here. So your name, your style of developing is known, so that your next game can be sold for a higher price point, as it's more in demand.

War of the Roses is coming out and it's like 20$ on Steam right now. (If you own M&B), not the same gameplay of course, but the same game-type and setting.

You need to be competitive, with aggressive pricing. I just don't think it will sell that that price.

You think because it's MP only, 30$ is fair, to the normal 59.99$, because it's half a game...but it's also an Indie game, even if this had a full SP, you couldn't charge 59.99$ or 49.99$ for it.

Not being offensive, just realistic.

IT was the most out-standing Voice acting I've heard from a non professional game, beating many, and it sounded at times as if they had the original Voice Actors except Eli. I've played HL1 over 10 times to completion. Sure, there are most likely people who've done plenty more, but I felt Black Mesa is as close as you could get to HL1 in Source.

Low quality sound effects? Huh? They shocked me as I found them to better than I thought they would have been.

Performance is rather bad, yes. I see times where my CPU & GPU at below 50% usage or so.

Also, load time? Huh? It loads faster than HL1 for me. Nearly instantly, I see "loading", then one breath, and loaded.

I think you just have a slow HDD. I have a SSD.

Just to be clear; I don't think Black Mesa is like the super best mod evars and it can do no wrong. There are certain parts that obviously just aren't up to the original.

But this review is stupid harsh. It's like because your ValveTime, you felt, to appease the old crowd, such as myself, you had to hate on it or so.

Very odd; that or I don't even know if ValveTime has any old gamers there, or are just new gen gamers who played HL1 in 2007 and base it all off that.

Having played HL1 10 times as I said, I see so many subtle nuances it makes my heart flutter. Little details most people miss, but having played it so much, I notice, and that BMS team captured...just amazing.

The 5$ having access to beta would be an incentive; they pay 5$, do not own the game, but play it and most likely love it, then can purchase it. Good all around. You end up getting more money!

Also, 29.99$ final price? I'm worried. That's half the price of a Triple AAA game. Plenty of Indie devs like to make their first release into the 14.99-19.99$ area.

1. Because despite the mod, you do not have an established name or brand, though you did change it to Medieval Warfare to attract the Xbox crowd, which I still dislike.

2. The videos look good and while still early footage, they very clearly do not compare to AAA+ companies. This sounds insulting I know, but it's a simple fact, budget and team size wise, not meant to be mean to you.

3. You're at the start of your companies career, you need word of mouth more than all the commercials in the world. Did you see Section 9: Prejudice, released for 14.99$, SP, and MP, and quite abit of content. It was very popular and a high seller due to this.

Previously they had released the first one for full price and no one bought it. But @ 14.99$ it hit a sweet spot.

I'd say with you, you have to get people to look at your game and go "Eh, it's just 20$", and try it out.

@ 29.99$, they are less likely to. People are fickle like that, a simple 10$ difference and a "Why not?" turns into a "I'll wait for a sale or just not get it."

Simple human behavior.

I'd suggest you look more into economizing your price.

Disappointed with a few things still though; beta access should be granted for anyone who donates on Kickstarter, up to the 50,000$ point. More people playing the beta can't hurt, more feedback, more word of mouth, and a larger range of systems to test it on.

Also the fact that 150$ dollar tier only includes one copy, while the 75 dollar tier includes 4. Seems plain stupid.

Should contain 6 copies + The extras.

Besides the fact you still ask for shipping on 750$ donations, I'd say you did a bang up job with the new F.A.Q

Just, you have to give actual incentives here. Some of these seem completely worthless.

I know this is meant to be funding / donating, but the rewards are limited.

When I saw "Pledge 5$ or more" I expected beta access, perhaps, that'd be the least you could do. For 5$, you literally get nothing.

Then instead of the 5-10-15 jump, or even 5 to 15 jump, you go straight to 25$! For a copy of the game. No beta access, digital.

Now, I don't know if you know about Red Orchestra 2 - it's a sequel to another mod gone retail. They charged 39.99$ at launch. The launch was a failure for many reasons, but the price was one of them. A big one.

I imagine a little bit higher than some Source Engine games, but I doubt by much.

The recent NMRiH would be a good jumping off point, performance wise, I think, even though they play quite differently, they use the same Engine and have some likeness in alot of areas.

Basically, you got a 2005 or older rig, you're good to play on low at a medium resolution, 2007 or so, you can run high if you want at a lower resolution and so on and so forth. Source ivery optimized.

Piano music pretty much makes everything good. I kinda feel like, right now, I should be looking at a slow moving collection of images moving down a tunnel of some sort, perhaps a building, room by room, with a slight fade out.

That, or a scene of someones back yard, or front yard, not night, not day, perhaps dawn or dusk, with perhaps a slight drizzle, a grey day at that, and slight wind blowing the tree's and such. Barren of life, though the surrounding greenery is quite abundant.

Having a screen door blow open and shut in the wind, with a just audible sound for it.

Yes, this music makes me think of empty, alone, abandonment. The Menu should be animated for a piece of music like this, surely, no still image will do it justice.

But I'm talking about alot of things just don't seem like they'll be ready for a release this year...unless they release without them and patch them in later, something not everyone is a fan of.

Aliens actually need the least Teamwork, unless that's what you mean. Marines require building structures and moving about in groups of 2-3 to be anywhere near effective.

But a Single Alien, due to the hitbox issues at current can kite around and kill all 3, even if you used a aim bot due to the melee hit detection. It's gotten better in patches, especially after the devs removed lag compensation for the Aliens. (Pretty much meant you could see your entire clip unload into them and not do any damage)

And yes, it's not about winning, but the issue here is, without a Commander, Aliens can still function to mostly their full potential.

But Marines, without a Commander, or a good one, are completely screwed.

Most games turn out with Aliens rushing and winning, because they can do it due to their unique mechanics, or Aliens rushing, badly damaging the base, leaving Marines spending all their time getting the base back up to par, then the Aliens have had time to actually do stuff.

There is also a poll, a voting of sorts, as to weather the devs should release an incomplete version of the mod with 5-6 characters, only one level of transformations and some of the systems.

I'd recommend to vote, but I also recommend to tell them to wait for full release.

Red Orchestra 2 just slipped up with this as well. Fine game, but buggy, and rushed quite abit; missing features even listed on the sales page, which they say will be eventually patched in. They priced this MP only game @ 40$. Almost the price of a AAA+ game. They did pretty well, sales wise from what I can tell, but the playerbase dropped off shortly. The game has gone on sale for 20$ right now, and yet the playerbase is actually -dropping-. People saw the price and would not take a bet on it. 40$ for an Indie MP only title was -alot-, but that was their second title, so they had some leeway.

Given that NS2 is their first real retail title, they plan to charge quite highly for it, despite the fact that their popularity has waned significantly. Friends of mine thought it was dead, actually, when they see me playing it, they thought I was messing with them.

They deserve money; they deserve to be rewarded for their work. However, they have alot going against them, and I can't see how they'll pull out of it. Especially considering the massive delays, the game is 2 years past release date and is still INCREDIBLY buggy and nearly unplayable for most people. Server hosting takes 90% of an entire CPU core on a really good even a normal Machine which can host like 10-15 Battlefield 2 servers can only host 2-3 NS2 servers. Not alot of people wanting to do that.

I really wish them the best; I want this game to be huge at release, but the price point, content offered, the delays, it's hard to justify buying it right now.

Wait another year or two. It's just started to become playable then it should be released. I can't see it releasing soon though, 6-8 months if they somehow sped up their work speed 600%.

Yeah; but @ 35$, I'd hold off. While it is a great game, and will only CONTINUE to become a better game; release won't be anytime soon, and honestly to pay 35$ so you can play a game in two years is really hard to justify.

Though maybe they'll do what they did last Christmas; 2 for 1 deal. That is how a friend and me bought it; at full price I wouldn't have, but me and my friend went halfsies and it felt like a much better buy.

I know I'll get down-voted for all I'm saying here, but honestly, they're like two years past their projected release date, even accounting for a new engine, they talk about how they're running on fumes(fund-wise), and they undertook a task that was far to big for their very talented, but keyword is, SMALL, team.

Though since the 16x series of betas, the game has gotten quite better, but it still is far away from 35$ worth. 25$ would sell alot more copies. I don't like paying anymore than 20-25$ for games that are only SP or only MP.

People vastly underestimate Goldsrc. Source was derived from it, so as you further develop Goldsrc, you can achieve a number of things.

I mean looking at the latest ESF stuff, you wouldn't think it's HL1's Engine either, but that's just how far removed it is:

Goldsrc can be pushed quite far with the right people using it.

Still, these animations are incredibly good. Seriously, these last few years, devs have stopped good animations all together and use some stock ********. So good job.

Still, just have a quick flash that you can barely see...or if you stare long enough, perhaps have a shadow figure standing in the window. I'd say to make sure to have alot of cricket noises here, also, and make them get quieter as you see the shadow, as they can sense an increase in temps or decrease, and stuff like this is usually associated with temps going down when a spectre is around.

Good to know you're going for the full deal though. Your mod has tons of potential and now you'll take it to the most it can do.

But please take my suggestion one last not down the story aspects and such...those are important. Make it scary, make it atmospheric, give it a good story...symbolism, I can agree, can be toned down.

On the topic of a demo...I think you should release one kind of like a teaser...have it not in the game itself, but showing off mechanics and possible things you will employee. Demos often spoil a really nice part of the full thing, which is best played in one setting.

I think the whole situation with Desura is weird, too. Desura is awesome, not denying that, but for games that require Steam, I see it was nothing more than just an extra thing to log into and have running. For games that don't require Steam though, yeah, it's quite awesome. I'd say it's the Indie version of Steam, but that wouldn't be fair to Valve, whom, for all intents and purposes, is still Indie.

It's just a good alternative for those who for some reason don't like Steam...though I can't imagine why. I still think Desura is a good idea, although it is so much like Steam, so far it offers no advantages to developers, sure, but to players, so far not.

One thing you cannot do is put in fast Zombies, though. IF you put in any, even as a boss, it will ruin what BrainBread is all about. It has to be massive hordes of slow moving, high damaging, infection spreading zombies. Just like the first BB, or it will just be another L4D like mod.

ANd I think you should call it Alpha, just to be on the safe side. Some of the betas in the past used pretty much 100% stock HL2 content...and to be called a ouch. I also hope you will have bodily mutilation ala L4D2 style, the first BrainBread had it so you could blow off parts of bodies, so these needs it to.

Really looking forward to one of my favorite mods being remade in Source.

I dunno what it is about Source games, but they have some kind of atmosphere that just attracts so well. Alot of people hate the "Source feel", but for some reason I love it.

No Steam Half-Life is usually pirated these days. I don't understand why either, as you can easily pirate the Steam version and play mods with it...though anyone who even calls themselves a gamer should own HL1 at the very least.

It supports it, I've seen it in L4D & Alien Swarm.

And I was looking @ 1:25 to 1:50 and it was still way to dark. Needs to be at least 33% lighter.

Also, make the spread wider man, for both the Flashlight & flares. Nothing makes a game WORSE than being to dark to see anything. You need to have about L4D's level of Darkness, you can't see sometimes, but you can most of the time.

It's very frustrating not being able to see...NOT SCARY.

Also, remember, Valve was pressured to release Half-Life on a certain date, they fought and tried to get more time, but couldn't, had to cut stuff, and the version of Half-Life we all love was released. So, sometimes it can benefit.

ALso, remember after this, Valve no longer had to meet release dates, because of their success.

Having your initial fame being built off a mod for such a game, I think it only fitting you also release an amazing game in a time of constraint.

Though your reasons for having to push it out by a certain date is different, the spirit remains the same.

This is true, even Half-Life gets an update once or twice a year, and that's a game from 1998. Valve's abit of an odd ball in the industry though, but that's what makes them great.

Good to know; I've seen some mods bum rush and put together a release in hopes of being MOTY, and well it just ends up hurting their chances. First impressions are release a buggy mod, with broken content, and some stuff left over from the stock game? Not many people will return.

Shotgun Sunrise went down that path...nothing can save it now.

Also, just going to say this; while you want to release it soon to compete better in the MoTY awards, I'd say don't rush, don't speed up production, take your time, you can win Upcoming MOTY this year, then MOTY next year this way, and also people won't be able to claim rushed development.

Well, they're indie. They can't afford to release a buggy game that has to be fixed by the community.

The biggest you get, the more titles you push out, the lower the quality becomes, but the higher the profit.

Hence why you see all types of Indie devs releasing amazingly detailed games with little bugs; it's their baby, they not only WANT it to do well, they NEED it to do well, or they're going to have trouble with the bills.

Bigger studios like EA, or BioWare can afford to release bug ridden games, because they have their names out there.

But but, mid-2009 you guys said you would implement a feeding System for the survivors, if they didn't, they'd get slow and melee attacks would do less.

It was one of my main reasons to be excited bout this, it seemed unique, a little difficult to implement, but unique. I know you guys had to re-start, but this was mentioned after said restart, I even registered on your forums and made a comment about it.

"Down the line, we plan on adding in things such as supplies, and perhaps even a hunger system for humans that keeps the players having to explore the map and find food. And generates PvP conflict for when one group of survivors has food, and another doesn't. After all, the core of the problem between humans in a world without infrastructure is surviving at all costs, and everyone needs to eat!"

This is pretty much the best DBZ mod ever, and as far as Half-Life mods go, probably the best looking one ever also, graphics wise. Though that other mod...can't recall it's name has alot of nice features too, but you guys completed changed the nature of the Half-Life Engine.

Most Mods are...mods. Yours is a total conversion...Engine over-hauled, gameplay changed, graphics...everything. You even introduced a new mapping System.

Seriously guys, expect insane results when release, and if any of the Team members aren't ALREADY working in the Industry, they'll get one after this, for sure.

To be fair, for Namco, it's a job, they get paid, and they release a new one every year.

ESF is like a local dinner, can't be produced in the same league as big chains, but often better food, service, ect.

SDK's never give the Source code of the game away, only the ability to manipulate certain things.

L4D's SDK is no different from Source SDK, or any other SDK.

Millions and millions of gamers exist. they don't even have a 0.5% of them. If the group has 500,000 players, then yes, they'd make an impact. 100,000, and they might get attention. 50,000 & under is ignorable easily.

Dude, you won't regret it. I used a FAQ due to some fights being really know. I also decided to get the True Ending on my first, and my other two(as you've said, MUCH more tempting endings), for future play-through or two.

The "True Ending" pretty much wraps up every single little question you could of had, even some you didn't think of, but once they point them out, you go "OH! That's RIGHT!"

Have fun, Final Dungeon is really a pain.(Almost every normal enemy is a boss)

Still, not a bad cast. Decadence really was a let down. It looked pretty badarse from some screenshots and stuff I saw.

I told you guys were comparing it to a Barebones TF2!!! You told me you didn't! I knew it!

I agree, it's not strategy based usually. It's so beautifully mapped though, the textures and maps, everything is great about those. Scout in this really is powerful, but the Heavy MG is useless.

I hear it took them two years, working at a full time pace to pump it out...I'd really think 6 months of full, hardcore work could pump out the same.

I barely got a playable Ping, but most servers are SUPER laggy. I hear they only tested the netcode on LAN and didn't really think of how it'd work online.

It's a good story for a mod and the backround and stuff, but they don't make use of it in an interesting way.

In the end though, I love how when I listen to the Modcasts, I don't feel like it's some professional jerk or anything payed to review and whatnot, I feel like it's just a bunch of players rambling and thats what makes it worth listening to.

To most mods, a Soundtrack isn't even a secondary concern, it doesn't exist. :P

That's why NeoTokyo feels so professional also. I feel like a RETAIL game is getting released here. Soundtrack is on par with most major video game titles Soundtracks. I mean, Goldeneye Source took their soundtracks from the N64 version, improved the sound quality, added a few effects and called it macaroni.

I also love how so many prominent figures od Moddb are fans of it. :P
