Return to Modding

madwolf555 Blog

So this is something I've been considering for a while... On one hand, I feel I'm DAMN good at making mods whereas the other hand I feel the Wolf3D modding community kinda took a dump on me, this is from numerous complaints over the years including concrete textures looking "too boring" (I'm dead serious and no, I won't let that go), stolen sprites (coming from someone modding a retail game without asking the company or original developers if he can edit THEIR game, and using MY levels despite insulting my mapping skill as "amateurish") and being told I shouldn't STOP modding despite demands and complaints coming in flow from when I released Krucible (the first time). I feel like I'm in between a rock and a hard place!!!

Recently, I decided to play around in ChaosEdit and make a mod based on Vargskelethor Joel of Vinesauce and his adventures in gaming. I intend to make the mod only levels long b ut detailed with new enemies and stuff. That's all the details I feel like disclosing at the time...

Now... I can't guarantee lengthy fullblown mods like Krucible or Tara Carmichael BUT if I did do them, they'd be released exclusively to Patreon backers. I can not justify the hours-weeks-months of work handed out for free when people just shit on it. That said, more basic and not so mature rated mods will be released for free on ModDB... No more freebies like Krucible and Tara Carmichael...

I'm done

I already left you a message, but I feel the need to post here too, in case you don't read it for some reason:

Some people just don't understand how frickin' time-consuming and sometimes frustrating modding can get. Especially when you have a certain thing called GODDAMN REAL LIFE taking away most of your time.
I just want to say I loved Krucible. Except for the level 23 problem with the exit (which I mentioned in my other message) I found nothing game-breaking, and the bugs have SO many workarounds even without fixing.
People are getting this FOR FREE and it would be nice if they showed a little RESPECT for your hard work. Sorry that today everyone feels entitled to everything they decide to be entitled to.
I just wrote this to express solidarity. As soon as I can get level 23 up and running again and I finish off the Government of Order I will post my 9 review on the Krucible page

You're the art creator. Don't let failures get you down. You have an ability to create something beautiful. Maybe Wolfenstein 3D mods is your previous step in life. So, don't give up, but try something new. Maybe to mod a different game or maybe totally new edge of art creating (paintings, music, etc), who knows.

Sorry for bad eng. Good luck!

I've drawn and painted for years, Wolf3D's not the only thing I have in life...

I've also done work with Quake 3, Morrowind, Skyrim...

The thing is I don't see Krucible as a failure, I see it as brilliant (or else I wouldn't have worked on it so long to see it come to fruition). My decision on this comes from the 2 weeks after it's release where after getting off work (paying retail job) I check messages and see "Bugs. Fix it." It was endless, unpaying, and wouldn't let up. What pushed me over the edge though was when I said "no more work and bugfixes" one of the players tried to get ANOTHER coder to fix everything he had in mind. I really found this disrespectful towards me and the coder as it feels like we creators, artists of our own worlds and kings of our creativity, are expected to work without end to satisfy everyone else. Those last 2 weeks creating patches while juggling with my personal life and getting little sleep seriously felt like the longest 2 weeks I've ever done modding, and I've been at it for 13 years...

Sad. I found this situation disrespectful too. But don't think about this guy - there are a lot such people who post/doing ******** about our mods.

Well... Unfortunately this kinda treatment has been going on for last couple of releases. Brought up an idea I think is intriguing and fair at DHW about utilizing my Patreon account for future public releases...

Will get more into it in a blog...

Ok! :)

P.S.: If you need help with modding - feel free to ask (music, picture editing mostly). I'll try my best.
