I think it's very difficult to rate a game like this. Of course it can't compete with full price titles and for 6 euros the bang/buck ratio is not too good.
On the other hand, it's exactly as shown on the screenshots:
It has incredible style
It has addictive gameplay
It has awesome game mechanics
It has a great replay value

It isnt't a "real" zombie game. It's more a grey blocks - green blocks game

On the whole I think one should admire the work of this indie publisher.

Although still pre-alpha I've never played a zombie game like this.
Don't let yourself be fooled by the retro-look. It's the atmosphere and depth that make this game awesome.

As opposed to the fixed mechanics of modern fps and the stringent plot of many adventures this game is very non-linear and suprising.

Let's look at an example:
I left my safehouse to search for food in a nearby restaurant and returned late. I didn't know they had followed me... Busily preparing a pot of soup in the kitchen I heard a frightening groaning outside. Then they started bumping against the door. The night I hardly slept because I knew I was doomed: I couldn't leave the house to replenish my ammo and with only a baseball bat I felt somewhat underdressed for the party that would begin soon. A wooden door can resist a single zombie for quite some time, but the horde outside my house would eventually break through.

Project zomboid is like a mix of Resident Evil and Sims.
