Demo:
I get a window, in which wasd move a character around.
F1 shows my character coordinates
F3 resets character position.
e lets me add terrain, but it seems to behave oddly relative to the character i can move with wasd.
there is no mouse buttons for doing anything, at all.
a few of the screenshots seem to suggest there can be some buttons to do stuff, but i don't see them.
There is no clean way to exit, but that seems ok, it exits of it's own accord fairly promptly.

Is there actually a game here?

This is an awesome and beautiful simultaneous turn strategy game.

Now, perhaps, removed from the shrapnel distribution system, dominions has a tiny hope of at least some people convincing their friends to play. It's probably years too late for me.

I have a papar manual that was posted to me at ludicrous expense and wait time, with a cd key in it. I may even have a working cd still, just not a cd drive.
The cd key doesn't work in desura.

Six years ago, If i could have got CD keys at $30, i'd have bought 4 of them to be able to play with friends. Some friends may have then bought copies to be able to single player, or so we could add more friends to the games. Instead, i only bought one, and no friends saw more than the demo.

Now, a choice between $30 for each specific friend, or a too-limited-for-multiplayer demo, is still not enough for me to want to try to convince friends to try the game :(

a) If the demo allowed joining (not starting) multiplayer games with all the rights and options of a full client, i'd pay $30 for a desura+steamlinux dom3 license. That would be great for getting friends to play.
b) If dom3 was less than $10 i'd buy a second license, because that's not too much to ask for people to give it a try.

Compare frozen synapse, for the minimum $25 you always get two licenses. A much better way to do a game that benefits so much from multiplayer.

Note, i think dom3 is definately worth $30. It was worth the $90 or whatever it cost me in the first place, but convincing people to pay $30 just to try it out, is tricky.

I couldn't start the game with Desura:

Failed to execl /home/.........../towns/towns.sh [] error: 13

this worked:
$sh towns.sh

This gets Desura able to start towns:
$chmod +x towns.sh
