I'm currently developing "Homestead: Settle and Survive", an indie 2D sandbox game which focuses around wilderness survival and village creation. I program in C++, but am experienced in Java and numerous other languages. My favorite libraries include SFML and libnoise.

Thanks for the comment! We'll be working on more protection/defense systems next because everyone is too vulnerable at the moment.

There's already an alpha version but it's just closed for our dev team atm. Until I can get a solid server host, I can't really post a public link ;)

So far there isn't any lag ;)

I'll be sure to keep testing for lag and optimizing as I go.

There already is a lot of variation of vegetation, but I'll extend it later in the different biomes I'll add.

Yeah, pet NPCs and your own defenses will be the key to survival. Don't ever go to sleep/log out in public places ;)

I don't think sharks will be viable in rivers, but I will add traps later on which will hurt enemies. Also, I'll probably add ravenous dogs that will attack anybody nearby (except the owner of course...)

Pretty far. You can literally do anything you want with barely any restrictions.

However, there is an "invention" system I'm about to implement which will limit your construction to only stuff which you've invented already, but that's about it. Everything else is up to you.

Those who successfully help with Alpha will get Steam keys once it's released. "Successfully" means that the tester is a valuable asset and actually tests stuff (note: testing is very different from playing).

I also plan on having some sort of affiliate program for those who make successful let's plays and youtube videos about my game.

With that being said, I'm going to be creating the forums. On there, you'll be able to sign up for alpha and possibly help test Colonies if you are selected.

Kinda both. I consider it in "alpha" at the moment, but we're churning out new features and fixes so often that it would be hard to have a solid testing session for longer than a day.

I played HnH for 3 years. My first village I owned was where 2 of the best HnH players ever were spawned for their first time, and I also lived with Narnia and Odditown in w4. I have sooooo many stories from that game.

You can customize two things, your weapons and your character as a whole. Weapons are customized by equipping different tools, and characters change as you level up ranks within your village.

For example, you'll start off looking like a rough barbarian who isn't civilized. When you join a village, your sprite will gain clothes and look nicer. When you become a warlord, your skin will look bloody. If you lead a village, you'll have a crown and wear royal purple clothes. All of this helps players identify others within their village and within the game.

I would love to allow more customization, but the 16x16 size doesn't allow the artist much canvas room to do much besides the stuff I mentioned above. I'll try to get him to comment so he can explain it in greater detail if you'd like.

Hi. I plan for Colonies to be similar to HnH, but not entirely. I would like to extend the game into Korea, but I haven't tested the server at such a long range. There is not a download yet.
