I'm currently developing "Homestead: Settle and Survive", an indie 2D sandbox game which focuses around wilderness survival and village creation. I program in C++, but am experienced in Java and numerous other languages. My favorite libraries include SFML and libnoise.

Hey, I answered you on the greenlight page, but here's my reply!

1) Nope! If we did so, the main server's population would drop off tremendously. We are open to discussion, though.
2) The game doesn't have premade quests, your friends make the "quests". For example, people will commonly create bounties on a person, announce some trade opportunities, etc.
3) Yes, they lead to the underground realm. I'll post screenshots of that area once the graphics for that are completed.
4) Yes. More on that later.
Ultima Online was a heavy influence!

Not too much, don't worry. We want it to be accessible for all the people who want to play it. Unfortunately since it requires a pretty intense server, we need to fill those costs somehow. We have a few tricks up our sleeve to reduce costs for the users :)

That's exactly what we're going for! It's soothing and gentle when you want it to be, has lots of raw creativity, and has the ability to be frighteningly adventurous and intense when wars break out between villages.

Our first priority is to get a fun game for everyone to enjoy. This means that we'll need to spend a fairly long time in development, unfortunately. We don't have any expected "release" dates, but we're trying to be as transparent as possible in the development of our game :)

Yeah, it will be back up in 1 minute (we're transitioning hosts). There is currently not a way to test besides applying for a tester's account. A Linux build will be available eventually, but not at the moment (however, it works fine on Wine as a temporary solution).

Our current time periods are Stone Age -> Iron Age. What this means is that all primitive technologies will be available, while also allowing some of the later technologies from the Roman Empire to appear. There will not be any "modern" period since guns, cars, and all that jazz would not work properly. However, we are going to add projectiles in the form of catapults and bows/arrows.

I don't want thousands of testers yet. I want a controlled group, so I wanted people to register at the forums first. I made it a public link because it's too hard to manage otherwise. Once I actually start accepting pre-orders, then I'll care.

Those who successfully help with Alpha will get Steam keys once it's released. "Successfully" means that the tester is a valuable asset and actually tests stuff (note: testing is very different from playing).

I also plan on having some sort of affiliate program for those who make successful let's plays and youtube videos about my game.

With that being said, I'm going to be creating the forums. On there, you'll be able to sign up for alpha and possibly help test Colonies if you are selected.
