Hi, I'm a composer and 3D artist. Additional skills include intermediate programming (primarily Python) and web design. I rarely check this profile so it's probably best to contact me by the listed email.

I don't think it was deliberate either. The problem I was highlighting is that liberals go to liberal media, conservatives go to conservative media, etc etc. These media outlets only serve to further divide people. They dichotomise complex issues and deliberately attempt to provoke people. It's pathetic.

Often times stories provoke so much vitriol and outrage that a verbal brawl breaks out long before anyone bothers to check whether the story is actually true or not - this isn't just an issue with teenagers. Most people are interested in validating their views, not challenging them. But I'm not suggesting cons visit lib sites and vice versa - I think we need to circumvent these funnels of (mis)information and search the sources ourselves. Oh, and I don't use social media, it disgusts me... ;)

Don't bother apologizing, rectify the mistake. Despite now knowing it's incorrect you've left it there. It'd take less than thirty seconds to edit out the '4th greatest president' nonsense.

I don't give a rat's about Obama, but there's no reason to continue displaying false information about him. It's a well known fact that media in America is basically useless for determining truth. Soundbites and quote mines are used by media left, right and center. You need to find the original full interviews or full transcripts before quoting people to make sure you don't distort what they're saying. Sometimes that's going to mean watching a full 60 minute long video of someone you don't like to make sure they've actually said what you heard. Well that's tough luck.

@Madoka12 It's true that you don't see much of Midgar in FFVII. But even modeling the interior of a reactor... haha. And it'd be in full 3D, not just from one camera perspective. It's not that I don't think I could do it - I probably could - it's more down to time considerations. I enjoy working on this project but I've been with it almost 2 years and there's still no significant release which saddens me. I want to finish it in my lifetime :D Part of my motivation for doing frequent releases is to ensure the ability of anyone to continue the mod if they wish in the event that I stop developing.

In regards to CC content, I don't mind using it to help embellish upon the original game's designs in an artistic sense (although FFVII still takes precedence). I personally didn't really like the story and character additions it made though. I'd be more interested in something like Gast's research of the ancients, his interviews with Ifalna and ultimately his demise at the hands of Hojo. Not to mention a certain headless lady's residence in the Shinra HQ at this time ;) If the soldier floor were to appear in the mod it'd be work I'd delegate to someone else, I wouldn't make it myself.

This has been taken out of context and distorted.

"The issue here is not going be a list of accomplishments. As you said yourself, Steve, you know, I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president — with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln — just in terms of what we’ve gotten done in modern history. But, you know, but when it comes to the economy, we’ve got a lot more work to do."

THAT is what he said. "against any president" - not *above*. In no way does he indicate that he's the 4th greatest president. He's saying his administrations achievements could hold their own against others but that there's still more that needs to be done. Much more modest than how you chose to present it if indeed you even bothered to find and watch/read the original source material.

The door at 01:00? Do you mean the emergency exit door? That doesn't open - it teleports you to the stairwell cell or, if you're in the stairwell cell, to floor 59. I'm not aware of any doors going over the walls...

As for animations, I'd love to make new ones for everything! But, as Neomonkeus said it's pretty unlikely at least for the foreseeable future. I do plan on learning to animate at some stage though. But since it's currently only me I really want to prioritize finishing off the existing areas ;) I agree though - some of Fallout's animations aren't to my taste. SMG shooting with one hand... what were they thinking! :P

@fischkopf Making the whole of Midgar isn't something I think anyone can do to be honest - at least not in the sense of making an interesting, free roaming Midgar. Even with a decent sized team making a single sector would be very daunting... and frankly I don't think this mod will ever have a big, skilled team (although I hope it does :D). I mean sure, I could fill up the plates with repetitive buildings and generic 2D-personality characters, but would that really be fun?

If I can complete floors 59-70 to my satisfaction I'd consider doing floors 1-3. And if that also went well I'd consider connecting the tower to the subways perhaps - we do after all have two basically finished train cars. Basically I'd rather go quality over quantity. I guess I should've covered this in a news post :D next time, next time...

Yes, they're supposed to be roughly cut ;)

From the reading I've done polygons seem to matter a little less than is popularly believed. Poly count, of course, still matters and optimizing a model so as not to waste any faces is always prudent. I noticed some flat surfaces of vanilla FO3 content are divided up into more faces than necessary to allow for vertex colouring.

More recently I've become just as concerned with optimizing my textures and making sure not to use more than one set of textures per object if possible, squeezing the most detail into one map, etc.

JigsawPieces Jan 29 2012, 11:35am replied:

They modelled it, but each floor is separate in the original game. They didn't actually connect like these do. The upper floors of the tower (60-69) would go progressively further in one direction (right in this image) if you were to make them as in FF7. This is because the top of each staircase on any given floor reaches the next floor on the far right, while the preceding staircase ends on the far left. This would be normal if the staircases alternated directions, but they always go from left to right, giving them an 'overbite' to the right.

I don't know if I explained that very clearly, but if you Google shots of the floors and try to figure out how they connect you'll probably be able to see how that'd cause a problem. The tower has a lot of little idiosyncrasies like this. Sorry for the big comment, I spent a lot of time thinking about it :D

Once upon a time recreating the whole of Midgar (as a free roaming, playable area) was our goal. That's simply too ambitious, which is why we're making Shinra tower. But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll never be able to visit the plates if things go really well with development ;)

JigsawPieces Feb 20 2012, 2:10am replied:

There is no low poly version of the Shinra Building. I'm going for something in between high and low poly with normal and possibly displacement maps. The model in this image is about 45,000 polys. The Midgar model you currently see in the mod (outside the windows) actually has a higher polycount which is mostly due to the buildings on the plate. I'm pretty confident a way can be found to model all of Midgar with a 50,000 - 60,000 poly budget ;)

Also, the model of Midgar you see out the window will have things removed such as the central column, parts of the Shinra Building and generally anything out of view. I might export the plates separately and only include them in cells where you can actually see them. The most demanding area on performance will probably be 69/70... since they're joined in an open manner rather than by doors, plus the open air balcony allows you to see ALL of Midgar basically.
