I wanted to start with some little modwork and I am supposed to draw some canyon-like environment and that task perfectly combined with my personal task to learn how to draw/paint mountains. So, I started and didn't really get a good looking results. Looked for some good references and thought that I could do some matte paintings then, but the material I got didn't work out with the task I had. But I also found some digital paintings and that's why I started to do some studies/copies then. However, I still don't know how to get a good looking result like the one in my reference image. It's a really rough style and just an idication of canyons, but it totally looks like that. I think that it's just about perspective, as I also had a rough style and different tones, but it didn't get near my reference image.
Stopped after a while and added some lightning to get a little atmosphere. So, it turned out to be another mood painting. Added two little figures that might remember you of Star Wars (how comes :p). Will try some studies in the next days and if I can't get it right, I will ask in the deviantart forums.
By the way, I don't know why, but blue is the best color for simple lightning like that. I don't know why, but blue just works fine and you get a good result with that color. Other colors always look like it was just another layer in color above, not with blue though.
