These either worked from a manual release system.
Or possibly had a heat reactive system that automatically released them.

So imagine being in a room and there is a fire.
Then suddenly glass is shattering all over the place releasing this chemical stuff.
And they probably came from the ceiling, so you could get beaned by one.

Thank the Romans for inventing pipes, so someone could make the sprinkler system.
