You've misread my post and built one hell of a strawman there. Let me clarify, because apparently you've gone straight onto the defensive without much in regard to context.
I never said Christianity was the cause of the dark ages mentality, it was simply used as a tool by people craving power.

Regardless of the motivations or origins of Islam, they still did a phenomenal job of preserving classical culture. It allowed for a neo-classical revival that propelled us into an age of increasing prosperity.
No matter how you spin this, it doesn't matter what the Muslims believed. That's completely irrelevant.
The Nazis pioneered rocketry and paved the way for space exploration as we know it. That doesn't justify the crimes of the Nazi regime, it simply means they managed to do *something* right.

I completely agree in your views regarding organized religion- you're absolutely right- its eerily cultish and its the sole destructive arm of religion. I certainly don't have a problem with spiritual people. Just because I disagree with it doesn't mean others should. Some people benefit immensely from their religious perspective.
It isn't my place or anyone else's to judge an individual on what works for them unless it negatively impacts others.

A lot of the monks were imperative in preserving culture, but when people refer to the church, they're talking about the higher echelons in which corruption and power struggles were common (usually leading to the deaths of thousands of peasants)
Ancient muslims also did a fantastic job preserving classical Greek/Roman culture, without which we may have had hundreds more years of dark ages and a stunted renaissance.

The Native American Genocide was much larger... There are many schools in the US where kids are still taught that they were simply displaced or that they were defeated in 'legitimate wars', but in truth it was the attempted destruction of not only the Native American people, but also their culture, religions, and traditions...

In reality, the defining moral choices are never black and white. Those choices are often irrelevant compared to the implications behind them. There are no satanic legions filing out of Morder just as there are no pure armies of elves.

Don't worry about video games interfering in your religion. People made them as entertainment, and if they feel like anything more than that, you should probably take a break from gaming for a while- chances are you're taking games far more seriously than your beliefs.

Barack Obama is going to be doing everything in his power to work around congress rather than through it.

Honestly, as bad as I think it is, I don't blame him. We're so factionalized now that our system of checks and balances has devolved into a system of vetos and filibusters. In order to bring any kind of change, the president has to start concentrating his powers.

Look, it's f*cked up, and my faith in government is at an all time low, but we have to understand that the American voters brought this on ourselves. Congressmen get re-elected because moderates only vote for their president (most people don't even KNOW we have mid-term elections)

If this continues, things will certainly be better in the short term, but in the long term, our government will centralize power more and more until we become fascists who vote as nothing more than a formality. There's a chance that it can still be reversed, but it's starting to look unlikely.

Skyrim is a sandbox rpg, Darksouls is a linear rpg.

I see them as completely different, so I won't compare them. Due to my preference, I enjoyed Skyrim more, but I don't have a problem with people who think otherwise.
I would take arena or daggerfall over darksouls- maybe not redguard though. I can really get into retro games. Even without mods, the 3 contemporary Tes games you're talking about aren't at all bland or uninteresting depending on how you play them.

My preference in games requires a lot more freedom than a game such as dark-souls, regardless of whether or not its good.

Both are good games, but remember that both games are very different. It's like trying to compare Arma and Red Orchestra. Both are amazing games in and of themselves, but if I was being asked which I would rather play, I would choose Skyrim (or any TES game for that matter) because it's open world with mod support allowing it a lot more replayability.

Humanity can observe the universe and still never understand our origins. Imho, the big bang makes a whole lot of sense, but if it gets proved wrong with *LEGITIMATE* evidence, I wouldn't mind that at all- I'm fine with change.
I think the argument now is whether or not the universe is expanding out infinitely or if it will eventually bounce back into it's super-condensed form. I'd go with the latter, because for every positive in out universe, there is a negative.

Maybe this can be a religious issue too, but I don't think it's necessary to talk about religion in science- few religious texts are meant to be taken literally. They are meant to be interpreted, and if anything, discoveries and theories such as the big bang allow you to get a more accurate interpretation of such teachings.

I think you've got it backwards, violent revolution can be good, yes, but it leads to a period of instability- a period in which things can take a horrible turn for the worst. With the US, we were lucky having a 1787 constitutional convention- had we not reformed our post-revolution government, we could have devolved into a bunch of warring states, tribes, and the American states could have been taken back by the british.

Most revolutions end only in death- unless you live under a state that shows doctrine of violating it's citizen's natural rights, reform is the best- in theory a democratic government could become communist or fascist and still live on in a relatively safe stasis if done so through a series of reforms in government- still, neither of these ideologies are very good imo. A federal/state democracy is the best system, but it can be misused as can be seen in the case of the US- A better example of such a government would be Germany. It's the most neutral form of government in practice

We have some legislation that is based on certain religious teachings, but the christian side of the US and UK is primarily seen in culture. The US is roughly 70% Christian, chances are that'll end up somewhere in our government, but that doesn't mean our doctrine is strictly religious- we were founded as a secular state, although in some of our states there have been laws put up barring atheists from having political office- that denies the religious rights our nation was founded on, and the federal government has actively sought cracking down on such unconstitutional state laws. Still, we aren't a Christian nation, we are a secular nation.

Well actually, Obama is not the 'dictator' of the United States- he did feed our military intervention plan through congress, who in turn prevented the US involvement. Putin had very little to do with our decision at that point. I do think Putin displayed better leadership and kept things civil between the US and Russia in the midst of a potential disaster, and I have nothing but praise for him in light of that- on the other hand I think Obama did the right thing for the wrong reason by filtering through congress.

Now if we're comparing nations, I'd say the US has a better system and Russia has a better leading figure- I'd prefer the US govt though, because 1: it doesn't die like any 1 man will 2: It has checks and balances 3: It refines itself over time as the people change 4: It's protected my rights- If I went around claiming to be gay here, I wouldn't get thrown in jail.

InsanityPays May 14 2013, 11:45pm says:

Well, the United States in particular is very interesting to look at.

Here's my theory:
Our individualistic mindset that we've cultivated over the past 200 years has an inferred ideology that a simple thought can overcome anything. I'm not saying individualism is a problem, but I am saying people here are unrealistic. We have collective denial.
I am absolutely sure that far more people in this country have mental illnesses that aren't treated compared to those who don't suffer from these illnesses.
Our self rightious outlook instilled on us by our condition is the root cause of a lot of the western world's problems, and many people here will be quick to say they understand mental illness, but will NEVER look at themselves or at least come out about maybe having one.

We think we can overcome it so simply. A chemical imbalance in the brain or reclusive unconscious thought simply can't be dealt with that way, and these people (possibly even myself at some point or another) need to be both open and accepting of mental illness. We need to talk to medical professionals, meditate, and start being a little more open minded about this.

Now I don't want to rail on my country: we have done a lot right, and a lot of the world actually suffers from the same exact problem, very few have gotten pretty far in regards to mental health support. This is a global problem, but I see this as an opportunity to bring forth my experience gained from the world around me.

I'm a firm believer in political freedoms and choices- decision making- especially the right to make bad decisions, but in order for our society to be constructive with those rights, we need to pursue more genuine, gentile, and realistic mindsets and lifestyles. It's the only path left towards the collective betterment of our species.

Summation: Stigma can be a b*tch

Yea, that could be a possibility.

My own vision of MEC is based on an alliance between Iran and Iraq (which isn't unlikely with Iraq's new government). They manage to annex Kuwait during the Sino-American war, and NATO finally gets involved when the MEC invade the UAE for its resources. Internal pressures eventually cause Syria and Oman to be accepted into the new state, giving MEC a full capability to invade Israel- The US is able to just barely support it's allies, using whats left of Israel and the Emirates as staging grounds for the war.

Meanwhile China is concerned about the rapidly growing power of the MEC...

Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Turkey manage to remain neutral.

I've had similar experiences to those you've described while I was living in Europe. I have examples ranging from people telling me my country is run by malicious jews to saying the US invasion of Iraq was done to TAKE their oil. I had some random kid come up to me and say "I hate Americans" (causing a bit of a fight) at an indoor pool without any kind of provocation. Even though these incidents were rather frequent, at that age I knew that these people don't represent the majority of Germans or Europeans for that matter- I had to take these as isolated incidents, and I could see how that could be harder to do when observing the US after a lot of the problems we've caused in the past.

Having experienced the American education system, I can honestly say that it gets a bad rep and while it ins't particularly good, it isn't that bad either. I took both US and European history as well as AP government in high school. These classes were actually very informative and had clear bias (which is a good thing). I'll admit we have problems in our education system, but that's to be expected- we have individual states trying to meet federal standards with different funding/methods. Education can differ from state to state and even precinct to precinct. You can't expect any education system to be as thorough as that of a smaller, more manageable European state.

The US is also not bordered with any European nations, so it's actually unfair for you to expect us to understand politics overseas when none of it really effects us- In Europe, things are so interconnected between the states that understanding the other cultures, languages, and politics of your neighbors becomes necessity.

In short, a vast majority of Americans are critical of our government. You really aren't alone, those nationalistic 'muricaheads drive everyone crazy, the majority of Americans included.

While I was living in Europe the people were so condescending towards the Americans living there. These people legitimately believed they knew more about OUR government and OUR society than we did.It bugged the sh*t out of me- you can't turn around and say that's misplaced criticism of our government.
I'd know, because the average American would be happy to join in if we're making fun of ANY government.

The truth is that people have been conditioned to think we are this stupid and arrogant- it certainly isn't their fault, but it isn't ours either.
Our government isn't full of evil people trying to exploit the world- they're trying to do what they think is right. When I say we are developing morally, I mean that we're realizing that good intentions do not foster good results- our people are wising up to corporate interests, underhanded bills, and revolving door politicians. You won't be able to observe this right away- probably not for another decade, but it's happening regardless.

Globally, things always change for the better- whether or not my country lives to see this change is up to us, not a self-important foreigner who believes they're educating the idiot masses of Americans.

I disagree with these people

I read somewhere that the US can be best compared to a genius teenager on the world stage. The nation is young, and our power has made us arrogant (and at the same time older nations have been jealous of this power). We are still learning how to exert ourselves constructively. More importantly, on a national scale, we are growing morally and ethically. We are just now learning of our mistakes, and remember that we didn't fight a large scale war on our soil since the 1860s- on a social level we have been able to be apathetic towards violence, sometime glorifying it because we are not so familiar with it at home. Nowadays with our recent foreign wars, the internet, shootings, and general gray space in our foreign policy, the US is changing.

We are declining in brute strength while simultaneously growing ethically.

My biggest problem with this post is it's complete ignorance of any of these internal/cultural aspects of the US. We have our positives and negatives. We are certainly not a sole force of evil on this earth- I don't even believe such a thing could exist. We are far more complex than most would like to think.
