Mods are a funny thing. All are based off a core game that when it came out, no one complained and everyone enjoyed them. But as months past, the core game became old and repetitive. People wanted something new and whether it came in the form of maps, new units, or entire new factions, the mods became the superior products and the original game became almost unbearable. Now whether this is a problem or just a fact of PC gaming, I cannot clearly say. But I must admit that I have grown very attached to several mods that have really increased the play life of several games. My contribution to mods is mapping and it really creates a sense of pride to play on a map that I have single handedly created. Modding is a vital part of PC gaming and I hope the companies continue making it easier for us to access the game files and create our own on great games.
