I've never used Joomla!, but I hear that it's similar to Mambo (which I use on my website). I learned Mambo pretty quickly just playing around with the different kinds of content and modules, but I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that I don't understand because I took that approach. Joomlatutorials.com seems to have some decent general pointers and tutorials, if the user manual didn't make any sense.
