Glynkada @ Dear Esther - Soundtrack

Created an account purely to gush about Dear Esther.

It's magnificent, it really is. Single handedly restored my faith in a medium that I was becoming increasingly jaded by. A medium still so awkward and adolescent, that a hack like Hideo Kojima can literally wank in all our faces for 8 hours of cutscenes and be hailed as the Kubrick of interactive entertainment.

It's not perfect by any stretch, but the imperfections almost make it even better. The worst design decisions are all at the very start, but when viewed in context it almost feels like it was intentional, a metaphor for how tough the start of any journey worth taking is. Maybe even a test to weed out the impatient, ADD riddled Counter Strike kids who would have the audacity to give protips on how to shorten the experience.

I loved it all. I loved the pacing, I loved the framing of landscapes, I loved the script, I loved the music, I loved the narration, I loved the sick feeling I got in my stomach whenever I thought I caught a glimpse of someone in the distance, I loved the desolace, the isolation, the impending sense of panic, I love the fact that most comments on here refer to stuff I didn't even see, I loved that it had all the hallmarks of a great linear piece of fiction, yet two people could independently experience different things altogether, I just loved the whole thing.

Mark my words, in 25 years when people accept this medium for the great things it is capable of doing, when you see game critics on grown up mainstream TV programs doing retrospectives of where it all started, when the proper Kubricks and Spielbergs of the medium are interviewed about what made them get into making art, they'll all cite Dear Esther. Even if they didn't actually download it the first time round, they'll pretend so as not so sound uncultured.

So yeah, I just wanted to say all that before any of the above happens and you're too famous and busy to read my thoughts. You're an inspiration!
