I wrote a bunch of comments on human behaviour in response to your comment. The short version: people react to stimuli, and lose faith if they get multiple reassurances that aren't met over time. Some can handle this better than others but often their behaviour is influenced subconsciously by what they observe so it's often not as simple as making a choice. Also if what someone writes doesn't matter, they wouldn't bother writing it at all or choosing words to raise excitement.
