Stumbling upon this while moving old files onto an external hard-drive, I'm at a loss as to how I acquired this, seeing as how the mod is no longer in development (saves indicate I last played this in april 2012) and after giving it a go again, it was a mixed bag.
Most of the levels are obviously unfinished, buggy and misaligned, with most requiring console commands to run.
What story there is, isn't something to brag about. However, the large number of custom mapping assets, textures and models really show how dedicated the team was trying to assemble a mod, with plenty of new special effects and even some very impressive scripted events and cinematic physics at work!
However, it is incomplete and cobbled together. If you really want to see what could have been an interesting mod, drop me a line, I can see if I can upload the file somewhere :)
Confusing and somewhat unpolished, there was still a lot of eye-candy and the design wasn't bad considering how it was assembled in such a short amount of time.
But alas, it is still very short and much of the combat was very disorienting and far too tight, especially with the speed boost power-up.
Still, not bad overall. :)
Watching this mod grow since 2005 has been quite an adventure, with many ups and downs and a near cancellation thanks to the ego of a certain French modder. However, The Gate 2 has finally been released.
And I think I will get the negatives aside right now.
The story for this mod is beyond silly and convoluted and the game seems to skip from action to horror to sci-fi to fantasy and adventure like the whole 15 gigabyte file was thrown into a genre blender.
The locales are equally varied and misplaced, with prehistoric earth, Area 51, Korea, ancient Egypt and world war 2.
And I think that's why I like it so much.
Each level is very detailed and articulate right down to the papers on the desks, the wreckage in the corners, the crowded kitchens, the blood-stained hallways and even the detailed car dealership that you zoom past in two seconds during the best chase sequence in a half-life 2 mod.
With all this being said, TG2 is quite long at almost 60 levels and unfortunately, has quite a lot of bugs with questionable voice-acting and prolonged cutscenes that either explain little or nothing at all.
Regardless, CJB has spent years working on TG2 and should be complimented for his one-man-show in terms of design and mapping. It's buggy, hard and sometimes quite obnoxious (Seeing jabs at George Bush in 2014 is super awkward and VERY dated), but, The Gate 2 is one hell of a ride.
It's not for everyone and the size alone is quite a turn-off, but those who enjoy detailed levels, varied themes and aren't afraid to avoid bugs, then The Gate 2 is right up your alley :)
Wow, this turned out to be one hell of a hornets nest.
I'm just going to throw this out right now-
-The story in this mod unbelievably stupid and poorly told. Nevermind the fact that Purple Smart found herself in the middle of Nowhere, New Mexico and end up captured by scientists with the gman following her as she tries to escape the facility when everyones favorite resonance cascade crashes the party, it only get's worse when our Purple Equine realizes that the invading Xen and Military forces aren't particular fans of her.
You see, I don't mind set-ups like this (I've played mods with equally stupider settings) if they have the environment tell us the story as much as the scrolling text or an NPC does, I just didn't feel immersed here. Besides the unearthly magical glow holding up weapons (Which also raises the question why the Unicorn has great knowledge of how they work and operate), there isn't enough hints or even subtle clues to who you are. The players average height is that of a human being yet in a cut scene, Twilight is obviously rather short, and she doesn't seem to even acknowledge her environment, which also doesn't seem to acknowledge HER, besides one little scripted event with a scientist and security guard.
So, why the hell did I give this a 6?
I just found the level design strikingly well detailed for an unknown mapper, and the high-quality textures, prefabs and models are well used.
I just want to see the mapper make something with a better impact. Something great could have been done here, with a scared otherworldy unicorn using violence to escape from an alien facility and going against every moral she held dear to survive. And perhaps the levels could refer to her, with notes left by scientists and chatter by soldiers.
But again, as far as I know, this is the mappers first mod.
Keep trying man, you got a lot of negativity for the subject matter, but don't give up, you have a keen eye for details :)
While it does have some nice touches in level design, there are some occasional bugs that may hinder the progress of most players.
Not bad, but not anything special either.
While quite detailed and entertaining at times, this mod has overwhelming problems.
There is an odd mixture of high definition models mixed with low definition models and textures and most of the maps have serious frame-rate issues, making progression on higher difficulty's almost impossible.
That being said, it looks like the mod was a work of love, considering how much detail is present in every map. If only the Gameplay and optimization stood up to the mapping quality :(
It's a noble start and for what it's worth, it's a decent playthrough on a coffee break.
Some of the lighting in the mod needs extensive work and the way the combine appeared was rather buggy and was like shooting fish in a barrel. not to mention the mod was rather short and felt like a button-pressing adventure.
Otherwise, the level design was decent.
I hope the modder get's better in his next release, I'll be looking forward to it. :)

It's a copy of COD zombies on source, and to be honest, it's nicely done.
While some bugs exist, it shouldn't stop people from indulging in mindless zombie killing. For awhile, anyway. The mod quickly gets rather old after a couple of hours.
Regardless, those who liked COD zombies should expect to have some fun. Those looking for more may need to look elsewhere.
While on the short side and somewhat unbalanced, with odd enemy placement and monotonous button pushing to advance into the next area, TEW has a nice setting which isn't used nearly enough in shooters and has some decent amount of detail and texture work.
Not Martin Schultz's best work, but it was a nice try, and above all, it was something I somewhat enjoyed :)
The mod is very hard to navigate, so I was forced to proceed with noclip, which ruined the immersion for me.
However, I enjoyed the noir atmosphere and I particularly adored the intense combat.
Not the best, but it is rather unique :)
