I'm Elijah Houck, creator of Alton, IL, the largest modification for Fallout 3 to date. Alton, IL features a fully voiced population, a large main quest with two story paths, numerous side quests, dozens of new locations to visit, and a fully explorable world twice the size of Point Lookout, completely separate from the Capital Wasteland. I am currently working on Ethas: Embrace of Destiny, a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, alongside Justin Hardin. Embrace of Destiny is a mod many times more ambitious than Alton, with a world rivaling the size of even Skyrim itself.

Yeah, the collision on the top of the guard towers outside of the city hasn't yet been created, so the guards would fall through the tower. :P

It'll be there, we're quite a ways from release.

It depends on the quest. In this case, Marelus is scripted to stand by the fire prior to you entering, that way he can have that nice surprise reaction as he turns around when you approach him. The voice actors have really been hitting it out of the park, they've all done a great job.

Unfortunately it's a limitation of how the building kit and the walls kit are scaled. The pillars (which are part of the building) are not only too wide to merge into the wall properly, but also didn't match up with the length of the wall tile.

I like nitpicking like this though, half of my job is nitpicking my own work. :P

Believe me, we know how to design worlds and dungeons, I'm simply wishing to expand our team to speed things up a bit. I prefer not to use dungeon generators, nor do I like drawing a dungeon out beforehand; I prefer it be created more organically.

Ah, yes. The area to the far right of the image actually peeks into an unifinished part of the wasteland, which is why it looks pretty bare and the ground texture repeats. (the ruin's exterior was actually finished the day of the shot)

This is one small area of Ethas, so believe me, it gets a looot more varied than this. A different area of Ethas, the Heartland (which we previously posted a screenshot of, but that area has since been overhauled), is full of trees with beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges.

The armor the Bandit is wearing isn't found in vanilla Skyrim - it's one of many armor sets created specifically for the Bandits in Ethas to give the impression that they basically took whatever they could find and threw it together. Standard brown shirt, but with an old, worn cuirass thrown on top of it.

Thanks for the feedback! It's certainly not outside of the realm of possibility that we could have a "Random" option when selecting your playstyle, it certainly wouldn't be hard to implement. Our goal is certainly not to alienate anybody, so I'll be sure discuss this with the team.

And do keep in mind that this certainly doesn't mean you'll find good loot all the time. You can open a crate, for example, and find only a few random items and a gold piece. This is aimed more towards "boss" chests that you find at the end of a dungeon or rewards for quests, so in my opinion, I would have even more motivation to go clear out a dungeon if I think there's a better chance that there is loot that I could use.

Sure! I can't necessarily say when we're releasing, but keep in mind this is a multi-year project. To put into perspective how much of the actual worldspace we've knocked out, I'll compare it with my previous mod, Alton, IL for Fallout 3.

Alton was twice the size of Fallout 3's Point Lookout DLC, which was by far the largest of the five DLC's for Fallout 3. Alton took two and a half years to complete. In the 9 months the Creation Kit has been out, we have completed an area of Ethas that is essentially twice the size of Alton.

So you could definitely say that we are moving along quite steadily. Unfortunately our progress has been halted the past few weeks as we were working to fix a bug the Creation Kit caused, but I fixed it earlier this week, so we should all be able to get back to work!

God, does this bring back memories. I was a huge fan as a kid, I owned every set from 2001-2007 (i.e. right after the cord holding up Voya Nui broke). I actually won a couple of LEGO Magazine design contests and had my creations featured in it a couple of times, that was the coolest thing as a kid. Used to hang around BZP all the time, back when Greg Farshtey used to hang around there (does he still do so?). Even though I "aged out" of them in 2007, I was still quite sad to see that they had been discontinued.

I wish you the best of luck, and if you need any advice on the project, feel free to contact me at eljhhck@gmail.com. I have a TON of experience in the Creation Engine and previous Bethesda titles (check out Alton, IL for FO3 and Ethas: Embrace of Destiny for Skyrim), and although I won't be able to help directly, feel free to shoot questions my way.

You'll be able to play through with your Skyrim character, even though Ethas is a world completely separate from Nirn (the world Elder Scrolls takes place on). If you load up a save in Skyrim, you are given a spell that allows you to teleport back and forth between the two worlds.

Alternatively, you can start a new game in either Ethas or Skyrim. If you start in Ethas, the teleport spell will bring you to the cart that you start Skyrim in, with the only change being that you won't need to create your character. If you start a new game in Skyrim, the teleport spell will bring you to the beginning of Ethas's intro.
