Couple of notes for the uninitiated.

This is very similar to what the military wears in Iraq...which is a desert environment. Its better to be hot than have a sucking chest wound.

The model reminds you of graw because both are fairly authentic in portraying modern/near future military. The flak vest and camelpack is probably the biggest example of this. The guy is wearing a newer vest which is similar to what they put on the GRAW models. Makes sense.

The chest packs carry ammo and thus are necessary. Would you rather look fat? Or have no ammo? Granted he is holding a shotgun and those packs are clearly designed to hold rifle mags.

The acupat I have to assume was the closest modern digi pattern they found that mirrored the urban camo from the original game.

Crits:

He does look a little topheavy, and that may be because of his leg proportions as was suggested.

No cargo pockets?

He needs a belt with a vertical loop to hold up his drop holster (sidearm), especially if he's only using one horizontal strap. The belt would go over the blouse and under the flak vest and we should be able to see a bit of it, and the vertical strap leading down to the holster.

No zipties? I guess they are there to kill and not capture, I just thought it might be a cool touch.

Overall, a really great model, truly captures and updated version of the grunts from the original Half-Life. Can't wait to see the red-bereted sarge hehe.

Good call, low end pcs won't be able to run it most likely, even though it doesn't "look" too intensive. But anyone who is planning on getting UT2k7 will need an upgraded pc anyway.

"Four students are falsely accused of plotting to attack their high school. As the student body conducts thier own witchhunt, these four students are the only ones supremely placed to uncover an even more devious plot."

There we go!

I for one am much more intrigued. Good tease. And good thing you have the NDAs ready to rock. Good luck!

As I said on the news post:

I think one thing that is driving people mad is that there is no synopsis whatsoever, not even a log line! "Dani was a regular high school student until she realized that she had a power that could save, or destroy, the universe!" Even something as silly and simple as that would satiate those who are confused. I'm not saying this is what your story is about (I just inferred that from the images), just that any quick rundown of the synopsis would make some people relax.

Typically when I write a treatment, a comparison to two or three previous works is appropriate at the end of the document, while most of the document is concerned with the storyline of this idea in particular. You need to tell people the story BEFORE you give them any comparisons or they will just think you are throwing in popular names of movies and games to grab their attention and nothing more.

For example, I write a treatment the other day. One of the last few sentences was: 'It is "Garden State" meets "The Shining;" a quirky dark comedy about coming home that quickly turns into a nightmarish thriller!' It is probably one of the funniest comparisons I've ever done, since it is so unexpected, but the point is that that sentence came after 4 pages of the story's synopsis. Give us something to chew on, or it will be evry difficult to garner any more interest, let alone assistance.

Agreed Rofl, this looks intriguing and original.

Personally the guy on the horse and mother earth rising from a football field strike me as cheesy images, but as has been stated, these are merely concepts for now.

After playing for 30 minutes I know all there is to know for reviewing this mod!

Ok not really, but I'd like to give you guys my first impressions.

Visuals: The design of the ships and weapons are great. The characters are so-so and the NGM guys do look a little bit cartoony. Effects are good but the contrails get a bit silly, they start to look more like streamers when there are too many. Maybe cut down on their overall length. The targetting systems take a bit of getting used to, perhaps eliminating the enemy's icons when they are on foot would make assaulting the interior of enemy craft easier.

Sound: Gun sounds and explosions are nice, and appropriate, but the lock tones and other auxiliary sounds in space are annoying, there is a high-pitched wailing that might be when another ship flies by, but it really gets on my nerves.

Gameplay: In the shooter department, it is fairly standard fair, not much tweaking has been done to the Source engine in that department. Multiple weapons, classes, capturing and defending points etc. As for the space-flight, if the lag doesn't make it impossible, it is fairly fun. However, a few improvements are in order. First, I would like to see a loose aiming system for the spacecraft guns, since it has been effective in the more recent spaceflight games and, with the leading reticule implemented it would make targetting a lot more fun and dynamic. Another problem is that one doesn't really get the impression of speed, which is important for frenzied and exciting space flight action.

Stability: Not. But not entirely a fault of the mod-makers. The game crashed on me several times in that small period and was almost constantly laggy in space as well as some severe lag on ship when too many players are around. While I didn't have any significant framerate drop, everyone else were skipping around like crack addicts. This is a major problem with most beta mods released on source. The net code is very unstable and although this mod has done a great job at optimizing itself it seems, it still suffers.

Bottom Line: Best multiplayer mod released for Half-Life 2 thus far. Great looking, solid concept and above all else: fun! With some polishing and more coding work in the beta phase (and perhaps a rehaul of the NGM soldier) this could be one of the better multi-player mods released yet.

Is there any reason why you guys opted to avoid a loose aim system similar to Freelancer or Dark Star One? I find that system much more intuitive and accurate than the fixed crosshair you currently have.

Although the person who did the trailer needs to read a book on editing, luckily that doesn't reflect a single iota on the game itself, so yay!

Do I even need to say how much I'm looking forward to this game? Well, it's a lot...so there.

Please back up your statements in the future. This has nothing to do with the music industry, which operates on a very different rights strata.

There is no legal action whatsoever that Microsoft can take in this matter.

Halogen, you are in the clear. Continue.

EdgeFilm - - 132 comments

There's is technically nothing they can do legally if you can prove that you are not intending to make any money off of it. So many frivolous cease and desist letters are sent out by big companies all the time.

If you are using direct resources from the Halo games (ie: models, animations, textures) then you have a problem, but the intellectual property is protected from money-making ventures. Mods do not fall into that category, for the most part. If this is simply a fan-based publicly distributed modification that is non-profit in nature, then you are in the clear. Microsoft will also never go to court over something like this because A) they know it's frivolous and B) they aren't going to waste their lawyers and money on suing you.

As a point to note, Halo was originally going to be an RTS before it was conceived as an FPS, so the argument that Microsoft might steal Halogen's ideas is kinda moot.

I say you write back to them and meanwhile continue with your project...at least stall them for as long as you can.

You guys are going to LOVE working with UE3 (UT2k7 sdk at least)! I'd love to see a fully fleshed out 40k mod for it, could be amazing. Good thing you guys are doing a lot of your modelling now so you can focus on level design, scripting and programming later.

Best of luck!

I'm with Kat! Keep up the great work! I would gladly lay down cash for something this high-quality.

Don't listen to the leaches who say "give it to me for free!" They simply don't know the amount of work that goes into making something this professional.

Bottom line is: Free or Retail, Mod or Game, it doesn't matter. This is great stuff and will be a great experience. Granted, I can defeinately see this going retail, but, tbh it really doesn't matter, if it's as great as it seems, it will go far.

HAVE FUN that's what counts!
