Played this yesterday, first impressions: Very smooth, with interesting gameplay and nice level design.

Only bad thing I noticed was the inventory key was on Enter, a terribly unconvenient key guys, TAB or I would make more sense, the shop was a bit vague as well, but this seems like it'll be a great game :)

I'm starting to get worried, stop worrying about non relevant sound details and focus on the gameplay, please.

It's cool that you're spending time doing it, but in the end, it's worthless if the game will suck and I'd rather see posts about what you will be doing to make the gameplay great, rather than anything you're doing to make it more like a movie and less like what the hell it is. A freaking game, stop doing what all the big AAA publishers do PLEASE, you claim to be Indie AAA and you seem to be heading down the same path, I personally am deeply worried for what will happen to Insterstellar Marines if this goes on.

I fear it will become just another fancy AAA game, indistinguishable from other titles anymore, because it takes graphics and other "realism" over gameplay.

This is just my opinion as a worried Spearhead :)

DuckSauce May 11 2011, 9:04am says:

Yeah, it seems nice, but I can see the difference from advanced physics... the physics objects don't interact with each other, perhaps he still needs to do that, but it's an important part of physics interaction.

Secondly, no I won't excuse his language for that reason, english is not my first language either, that doesn't mean I'm raping it up this badly.(I find it really hard to believe someone can misspell Axis into Achsis unless they were just randomly hitting letters, if they are really someone that works with physics, he must have seen that word written properly somewhere o.0)

I would however excuse his language if it's not in his interest to learn it, while it's an important language, I know I don't want to learn stuff properly just because people think I should, I knew what words he was using/trying to use, though I still don't quite get...

How the hell does it work? And why did you make this a tutorial, when:
A. It's not a tutorial... he just tells some things and shows it, but doesn't go into detail how it works, making it useless.
B. You didn't make it, nor explain it so it becomes a tutorial.

Sorry for the heavy critique here, but if I'd still be writing mod news post, I know it'd be ****** if an useless article is popping my article off the front page, so please, turn it into something useful, or get it gone from the front page, for the sake for the mod developers that could use the attention.

Any bugs in Empires can be justified in favor of it being a "free" mod, being made in people's spare time for fun.

Judging by this (early) trailer, Nuclear Dawn ain't exactly bug free either(but that can be fixed) and they didn't really show much of the rts gameplay, so saying the fps/rts mix will be better executed is baseless, but could be true... or not.

+5 votes   article: Rising of a Trailer
DuckSauce Aug 22 2010, 8:18am replied:

The thing is, Empires does this already as a free Source mod, why pay for a similar Source mod gone commercial?

Sure there may be differences, but from what they've shown in the trailer, nothing spectacular or interesting twist that'd fancy me, maybe Empires fans will like this is as another hybrid of the sorts they like, but if I feel the need to play such a type of game, I'd grab some buddies and fire up Empires instead.

Maybe DigiTanks isn't that original either, but coming up with something completely new experience is nigh immposible these days, with most of the major and sub-genre's already being thought out. It does have some elements making it stand out from other games similar to it and that's what's important.

DigiTanks at least doesn't take the approach of taking a succesfull recipe and just that over again. I'm not saying L4Q is, since I haven't been following it, but there's plenty of games that do that **** and DigiTanks isn't one of them.

DuckSauce May 25 2010, 12:22pm says:

Nice article, gonna read the 2nd item on the list when I'm back from showering.

For the first item, also worth considering what's NOT fun, to define what is fun, assuming you aren't handling it in part 2/2

Example: Mass Effect 1's inventory system, was not fun. Why: It dumped tens or sometimes hundreds of useless crap in it that you had to slowly delete for an useless reward. In short, it's not fun because it feels like "work" repeatedly doing something boring because it has to be done.

Example 2: An old game called NoX I recently played, I played through it with warrior first, then second playthrough wanted to go for a mage, the game does hussle up the starting point a lot, but... then I got to a point that was likely going to be exactly the same and was painfuly long. I stopped playing since then and haven't touched it in these past weeks.

Again an example of what feels like "work", stuff you're forced to do in games that's either long or repetitive. Fun could still be there in the second example, but it was a big and slightly annoying level on the first playthrough, even if parts were fun, you'd have to through boring parts first and the sheer lenght of it would wear you out.

Something that is fun arises from that, in specific change can be good, being stuck playing the same map for hours on end wears you out, change is good to keep the playing experience fresh and thus the game fun.

Potentially to be applied on Digitanks: Don't make one standard level and let destroying it provide the "dynamic" experience. Make different levels with certain challenges, like high mountains blocking shots so you have shoot through the peaks for example, water blocking movement and stuff like that.

Dystopia system in my opinion could work just as well, give a set amount of points to spend on perks each player will then be even and still have the same amount of customization. But I believe you're content locked and all so this isn't gonna be changed anyway.

So I just wasted about a hundred words on the internet, wouldn't be the first time either :(

But Alien Swarm released the Alien Swarm SDK a seperate Source SDK as you will, so which is it people actually need... Source SDK, Source SDK Base(MUCH smaller than full SDK) or Alien Swarm SDK?

Is there anyone that doesn't have any Source game that can actually confirm this works btw? Mighty curious that this actually works and could be done so quickly, cause that's great news if that works(means more mods can do it! yay!)

Making the SDK separate clears the way for it being absolutely free to *everyone*, without it granting access to existing 2006/2007 Source mods (which mount HL2 content) too. I'm betting that the AS SDK won't have the normal shared engine content we're used to from SDK Base, just like UDK only has a subset of UT3's.

You don't win a cookie.
The reason I'm heading this way could be translated into: Modular Combat has co-op, humans versus npcs, so what is this gonna be? Co-op.

Manhacks are a natural choice for being a flying enemy, with physics and stuff to go with it.

So you could read it as: After playing modular combat I got inspired to make a co-op mode for GN as well.

Does that clarify it good sir?

Uhm, you shouldn't need to install anything but Source SDK Base and Source SDK Base 2007.

What did you download?

Not thinking, we have a plan for it :P
But currently GMN (modeller and mapper) has a bunch of other stuff to do as well, so it's pretty much a "when it's done" thing.(it will first require a new player model, no small task)

Further intel, seems the armor regen buggers my armor amount, it stops regen at 37 and it resets it to 37 after using a recharger and going over that. The battery packages however don't cause this reset either.

I've also noticed an extreme annoying push from teammates, resulting in being unable to sprint properly if they're in front of you(they push you back), why not simply dissalow team mates to collide complete and remove the push. Would have been easier to code too :P

Dev textures, yummy :D
I really like this approach, no time spent into visuals that can be hard to alter for gameplay changes, making for a highly gameplay oriented approach.

That's really the way to do it, keep it up guys!

Seems I can't go over 37 armor to be exact when my max armor is 50.
Additonaly, swapping to a 0 in the clip 10 ammo reserve SMG due to the ammo regen when I'm clubbing someone/something can be really annoying, there seems to be no way to turn this auto swap off. Would be nice if that could be disabled in a future version.

Awesome stuff, first time I really got to play this, was alot of fun :D

I chose my suit to have 50 armor max though and when using the suit rechargers they would reset it to ~35 and start charging me again, never reaching 50 and the mega charger could charge me to 50(overcharge of 50 or oversight?)

All in all, great mod, keep on updating it!
