I code stuff!
Funny to not see Minecraft on here...
HAH FOOLED YAH, honorable mention as to be expected of a game that widely loved, sadly not by the sauce :( I rather destroy than build. Oh yeah!
Not falling for that again!
Lots of honorable mentions this year.
Anyway, congrats to all the winners, they all are titles I heard off, no surprise seeing them on the list, though I had no idea Frozen Synapse was this popular, I've heard people spreading good words about it(I also got it gifted recently, it's pretty cool) but didn't know it was this loved on the ModDB/IndieDB community.
Edit: Now that I think about it, wasn't minecraft in alpha/beta last year, therefore counting as unreleased, like Overgrowth and NS2? Doesn't that requalify it? Just curious. Released status these days is so... vague 0_o
Agreed, though I'm aware of the pains involved, I sure do.
I had this downloaded to try this, but hearing this I guess I won't bother to install it.
I know it's no fun, but it's going to make your players happy :)
You don't win a cookie.
The reason I'm heading this way could be translated into: Modular Combat has co-op, humans versus npcs, so what is this gonna be? Co-op.
Manhacks are a natural choice for being a flying enemy, with physics and stuff to go with it.
So you could read it as: After playing modular combat I got inspired to make a co-op mode for GN as well.
Does that clarify it good sir?
hehe yeah, it comes out very nice in this video.
Sadly it's not actually in this release yet, but it'll very likely be in the very next update that's gonna be out a week or two after after it's had some... difficulty adjustments :P
While I'm aware of the team sizes needed to produce something worthwhile for SP, I'm still wondering if this is a smart move, people here seem to prefer it being singleplayer and you have competition from at least 2 other upcoming multiplayer dino games(most known, but farthest away from a release is Primal Carnage, the other is partly kept "secret" so I can't name it) which both are using more up-to-date engines than Source.
I'm wondering if it's really such a great idea to switch over to MP.
Possibly you can drag out a release sooner than them, but once (more) media arrives for those other two, people WILL be comparing Dino D-Day with those. If it's kept singleplayer, you've got your own unique thing going as I don't know of any Singleplayer 3D Nazi Dinosaur action games :P
Regardless, nice post and good luck in the future.
Uh oh, David, looks like you skipped a certain step in that tutorial ;)
Anyway, folder name should be "Orion", or whatever the >modname<_english.txt file in the resource folder is called. Or rename the >modname<_english.txt file to be exactly the same as how you named the folder. Then you should be able to see servers.
I've actually thought about the grappling off other players before, without the pulling though. It's an interesting idea and one I might end up trying during private testing. The pulling part I'll probably leave out though.
As for powerups pushing players, the speed boosts don't fill that job for you?
Concering team modes; Deathmatch doesn't really make it worth it considering the size of the maps.
Maybe there'll be a team mode someday, but primarily movement based modes will be first, keeping all the teams stuff for last.
I do agree with you on keeping the mod simple.
But on the other hand... there was a certain... plan for player models that would make it perfect to have 3 models of three very basic classes, it'd be mostly things like speed and damage reduction to help support different playstyles.
However with the new models that may not go through.
Thanks for expressing your concerns though!
You mean when they're not active? They aren't THAT hard to notice in game with a full screen though, adding effects to all of em could.... get laggy :P
You only need to be aware of the charged ones anyway.
There's btw no teams... yet, not gonna add it for deathmatch, but future teammodes may have teams.
If scripting wouldn't be limited like you say it's in those games, then I'm all for it ;)
I can't help with the decision which scripting language to choose, but I've experienced a bit of two ways of modding.
1. Source, most of the gamecode is part of a C++ solution that you compile, with a couple of "scripts" that's mostly just textfiles being read by the code.
2. Mount&Blade modding, they use Python another scripting language.
The way I experienced it, Mount&Blade was severely limited by allowing the modders to only use scripting. While you could do a nice variety of things really easy with little knowledge of the scripting language, the downside was you were largely limited to that what the developers "allowed" you to do, basically a large part of the gamecode was done with C++ and you didn't have access to it, meaning core parts of the gameplay couldn't be changed because alot of stuff was "hardcoded".
So maybe that was a decision they made, or it had to do with the limits of python that they couldn't do the "hardcoded" stuff with that scripting language. Either way the result is that modding became limited to little to none gameplay changes, gameplay remained that of Mount&Blade, unlike Source where a first person shooter is turned RTS, RPG or a racing game or heck even be turned from 3d to 2d!
So you should also consider how much freedom you're want to and can give modders with the scripting language you choose. If you're gonna do as much "game" code you can with a scripting language and the "engine" code with C++ and the "game" code is what modders will work with, then I'd say choose Lua if it can be reasonably done with it since that's supposed to be easier on people new to that sort of stuff.
If you're gonna let them work with your C++ code and a scripting language, choose that what's similar to C++ so it's also easier for new people as learning 2 new languages is worse than one.
My guess is T.K duck TK's because he's sad that he doesn't have an owner when he is created, since he can't kill in name of the person that died, he'll just kill EVERYONE in a BLIND RAGE OF FURY!
Mini-Deathball sounds interesting, looking forward to what that's gonna be!
I bet you cancelled that one out the moment you thought of Panther's rawlgun combined with that perk :P
Sounds great :D
Decent modellers are hard to find :P
Creepy concepts by the way, these could be insanely creepy if put in badly lit area's :D
Yup, good chance you were.
Fun game, recommend it to anyone who is even slightly interested by the trailer.
Superb work to whoever was responsible for this piece of awesomeness!
haha Tats quote ftw
Steam chat hehe
It may be just a box room, but it's the best box room I seen so far that isn't part of a commercial game
For my mod my installer needs administrator mode(according to ISTool), I have no problems running that setup, so I'm obviously in administrator mode already :P
Dual Core maybe? I've got a twin core intel chipset too.
Also have DDR3 memory, don't know how common DDR3 is nowadays(4 GB btw)
I also get a Error E1514, saying: Invalid pointer or handle in(blank)
My OS is Vista 64 bit, maybe it doesn't work with 64 bit?
Yeah phanrack seems to be of the 4Chan type of guy and he's also an expert at using skull grenades, he loves those things, since he made this, it's obvious he wants there to be lots of skull achievements :P
And yeah To be or not be should be more complicated... such as kill yourself with your own skull grenade while frozen by a stopwatch grenade :P
Don't worry, holy hand grenade has a gigantic radius, the particle effect afterwards is just a aftereffect marking where it blew up.
As for clusters... the cluster nade will be a bowlingball, they won't fly as far when they're heavy bowlingballs AND they will cause some serious bone breaking if they get launched full speed into someone :P
both primary and secondary are meant for pushing objects, not dragging them towards the grenade
Activity is fine, but imo releasing polished media is better then just releasing random stuff for the sake of having an update every week ...
Well I could imagine something expanding being easily done through a (animated) model, though I've never used models with explosions, just sprites, I heard they can use models though.
First off all a whirlwind effect would be hard to do, secondly both primary and secondary are meant for pushing objects, not dragging them towards the grenade :P
newly LUNCHED mods? you must have been hungry while typing that :P
And yeah some small description wouldn't hurt, although I don't think it's very needed and it would require some proper investigation or else the descriptions are likely to be wrong anyway...
short but interesting
strangely my own mod goes against this stuff and a variety of other stuff given as advice and development is still going on after more then half a yeah, but yeah some good points! The more you've done already the more likely people are gonna help you.
good episode of the banter :D
So how long ago was this recorded exactly? :P
P.S: Jailbreak kicks arse :P
yeah, I *might* not be able too, don't know for sure yet, but retail would be much better for me too. Imo this game can compete with any retail game out there, although the strange art style would potentially not draw customers, but everyone who sees the video's and not the images will agree this game ROCKS!
probably late comment by me but I apperently Black Mesa already received Best Upcoming Mod some time before and mods can't receive the same award twice. Although then again I read that for Player's choice, not sure about editor's choice.
great update, grats on the win too! :D
great update, and that last picture is looking awesome!
wow great lightning :D
hmm yeah but this never happened before, I guess you're new gonna do this for all mods mentioned? I thought it was just for interviews.
also didn't see this pop up on curse yet which I'm watching as well
why does this show up as a Berimbau mod feature? :P
with christmas vacation on the way, expect lots more info and media soon :D
may be stripping the whole sound
maybe just goes hallejuha a couple of times instead, like 3 times then it explodes.
but we already got a cluster nade><
though im thinking of more then one cluster grenade so maybe we'll do the banana's .. maybe not, and alt... stop giving orders to my slave!
glad you like it, as for the holy hand grenade, we're not entirerly sure yet what it will do, most likely it will be spreading some sort of holy gas like holyness that disapears quickly but vaporises anyone who's inside immediatly.
Paths need to be rebuilt!
B-b-but I like typing!
Yeah, just look at my school for instance, each year there's like 8 groups of 8 coders.
And there's a hell of a lot more out in the world.
Finding ones to join a free mod project on a game the majority of all those many coders in the world probably don't even have and be available to do work besides their own projects, now that's hard :)
Yeah this mod is the exact opposite, SB(Super Badass!)
Had a ton of fun with this :D
Works now, thanks for that :)
When I launched it through SideKick it seems to mess up the _english .txt file as localization stuff went missing, when I relaunched through Steam it was fine again though, thought I'd report that as I believe chat doesn't properly work anymore when that happens.
Oh I just spotted this type in the article summary, just HAD to post it:
What are buf gixes?
Same, I installed with the torrent download, can't update with Sidekick, using the username and password still in my email inbox to the letter, case perfect and it won't accept it, so I can't update either.
It better not be an April Fools btw, it's 2nd april here when I woke up and saw this.
Oh, that's a change from the last trail I saw :O
I couldn't even recognize it as Source.
Job well done on the makeover, gameplay looks smooth too.
Well not all my goals are in video's, but it does show how devepopment progresses quite well.
You shouldn't abuse hotdogs like that, you evil bastard.
Just be aware, you don't have unlimited arrows :)
But small goals, that's the way to go, achieving smaller goals working towards a bigger goal can be satisfying, while just shooting at a harder to hit goal will merely end up in frustrating failure, hitting targets along the way to it will have that gratification of hitting each target. (or most at least)
I use a similar approach, just take a look at my profile, the recent video's of the last 2 weeks I have there are part of a new hobbyist project, each time a reach a goal I set out(whether that's expirementation or not) I make a video to show it off and it feels good making progress like this.
Looks good :)
Well that's your opinion, I haven't played the demo, but my opinion would be it's a perfectly fair price, it looks great, a lot of work went into it and I've seen worse games with crappier looks charge at least double.
I don't think I'll buy it, but it looks good enough to make me want it! But I'm not that into tower defense type games and I'd make me too distracted from my current development progress.
Chivalry: Most Dramatic Sounding Storytelling of 2011.
Still, good stuff, but the voice, way too dramatic :O
Yeah I'm pretty sure it was Maarten :D
I remember a Off Limits coder was one of the people who helped me got started with Off Limits, I wonder if he's still on the team.
Hilarious how you got people to + vote the one who's been making the **** they're hating on. Well played on that, I give you that.
No one is banning anything, it got removed and the creators can continue to work on it and show that work.
Please leave comments like "Kill/Bury yourself" out of this, I've seen no one imply anything that would even suggest fascism.
You however appear quite radical, you disagree with someone and then according to you doesn't deserve to live, I'm shocked and you are more like a fascist than whoever you were talking to.
Religion different then mine? DIE. Opinion different then mine? DIE.
See the resemblance?
Get some common sense man.
"There is no Freedom of Speech if we pick and choose which can speak freely"
Which seems to be the case here, I can find nothing in the US constitution at least that proves the right of ModDB to say they're still upkeeping freedom of speech.
Therefore you are in the right there. Touché to you then.
Your fact still remains unproven, but it's no longer relevant, freedom of speech is broken here, because people found it to cross the lines of what's permitted, but this line only seems to exist in what the people made up, not how it is in fact.
So while ModDB does have the right to remove content as they choose legally, this then does not indeed uphold freedom of speech.
So really, +1 to you for winning this argument.
Regardless, my opinion(freedom of speech and opinion eh?) is still that ModDB did the right thing, regardless of keeping in mind those people's freedom of speech or not.
I have done as you say and googled the US Constitution, what I find there is but one reference to freedom of speech, namely in this section:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
No other mentions of freedom relating to this subject, or any mentions regarding crossing the line of freedom of speech. So either all 4 US constitutions I've been looking through are fakes, or it's not in the US consitution, but perhaps somewhere else. For it does seem strange there is nothing about racism, affecting freedom of other others or other cases of what is crossing the line.
So, if what you say is a fact, it's not anywhere in the US consitution that I can see it, so where is this fact written then?
Constitution, show me a place where I can read this constitution then, again you come with no proof.
Is your country's constitution even the same as mine? And what constitution would apply to an international website that has users from all over the world?
Oh really? Clarify that and these "you people".
That is your opinion, it is not a fact.
Discriminating a person for skin color, for example: You are speaking freely, but it's discrimination and will not be tolerated.
Does discrimating someone directly affect that persons freedom?
What about insulting a police officer, or anyone for that matter. Real freedom of speech would be saying what you think of that person("I don't like you!") insulting someone is another matter though as police officers can give you a fine for insulting an officer on duty and perhaps worse.
But does that affect their freedom directly?
The answer for both of these is no, you are trying to present your opinion as a fact, I recommend you package it as what it really is.
But perhaps I'm wrong and what you say is true, which would mean freedom of speech is drilled into the ground when it shouldn't, but to prove that, present the actual fact from a credible source.
What I'm saying may not be facts either, but it's how I've perceived them to be in my country, whether these things are right or not.
I'm however not going to hunt down the appropriate facts, the whole point of this is, if you are just giving your opinion, state it as such, what you just said came accross as quoting a fact, but without citing a credible source.
Whatever the consequences, I think this was a right step, it's not about it being about killing, media and others will always be using violence in games as an excuse for the flawed moral upbringing and guidance of people's children when they go nuts.
This is about ill intent, the creators of that "mod" were like cinco said above, intent on seeing how far they could push the boundaries and get as much as attention as possible, such behaviour is a disgrace to both modding and gaming developers who may make games with murder or without murder, but are doing so without the intent to drag the reputation of games(and in this case mods) further into the mud.
Free speech is nice and all, but it's limited regardless, discrimination isn't allowed just because there's free speech.
This mod was an attempt to see how far they could push it, they pushed too far and are now facing the consequences and it's not exactly stopping them from continuing their work.
ModDB is like a website hosting service, except it hosts mods and games and other game related content in a different format. Aren't normally those normally asked to shut down sites hosting things like child porn?
I can't imagine they're not, there's a limit to what is acceptable to put up for hosting, the line was intentionally crossed here and ModDB took action after being pressured to do so.
There will likely be consequences, but there would be too if they did not take action, whatever they'd choose to do, they'd have people pointing their fingers at them, but I think they did the right thing in giving the developers a good hint that what they're doing is not acceptable.
In a way I agree, in another way I don't, it's an alpha, but already the combat looks different from both what the mod was and Mount&Blade.
The animations just have a ... bad look somehow sometimes, but that was mostly before the frantic first person combat bit started then it looked great!
Previously this "sequel" of AoC never really peeked my interest, but this video got my interest, so definitely tracking, keep it up guys!
Interested, but have to dissapoint you, since I'm not nearly dedicated enough, nor have my own PC available and logging that time is just not possible without. I'm wonder what humongus things you have planned to require 20 hours per week programming though.
Anyway, have you considered going to the UDK? I'd say it's biggest worry with that would be the server browser deal(assuming that's still an issue), but the bonus of being standalone would draw in more people(I hope :P)
Also idea: A semi tower defense kinda game, gardeners move along set paths to... gardeneer stuff, players have to strategically position themselves and set off traps and **** by their own suicides.
Well, that sounds like a lot of work actually, but just spewing stuff ^_^
You ran it over, then catnapped it and did necrophile things with it.
THE PLOT THICKENS.
But seriously, I wonder what these bad things are he mentions, this smells like slander.
