Funny to not see Minecraft on here...
HAH FOOLED YAH, honorable mention as to be expected of a game that widely loved, sadly not by the sauce :( I rather destroy than build. Oh yeah!

Not falling for that again!
Lots of honorable mentions this year.

Anyway, congrats to all the winners, they all are titles I heard off, no surprise seeing them on the list, though I had no idea Frozen Synapse was this popular, I've heard people spreading good words about it(I also got it gifted recently, it's pretty cool) but didn't know it was this loved on the ModDB/IndieDB community.

Edit: Now that I think about it, wasn't minecraft in alpha/beta last year, therefore counting as unreleased, like Overgrowth and NS2? Doesn't that requalify it? Just curious. Released status these days is so... vague 0_o

The reason I'm heading this way could be translated into: Modular Combat has co-op, humans versus npcs, so what is this gonna be? Co-op.

Manhacks are a natural choice for being a flying enemy, with physics and stuff to go with it.

So you could read it as: After playing modular combat I got inspired to make a co-op mode for GN as well.

Does that clarify it good sir?

DuckSauce Jun 17 2010, 1:09pm says:

While I'm aware of the team sizes needed to produce something worthwhile for SP, I'm still wondering if this is a smart move, people here seem to prefer it being singleplayer and you have competition from at least 2 other upcoming multiplayer dino games(most known, but farthest away from a release is Primal Carnage, the other is partly kept "secret" so I can't name it) which both are using more up-to-date engines than Source.

I'm wondering if it's really such a great idea to switch over to MP.
Possibly you can drag out a release sooner than them, but once (more) media arrives for those other two, people WILL be comparing Dino D-Day with those. If it's kept singleplayer, you've got your own unique thing going as I don't know of any Singleplayer 3D Nazi Dinosaur action games :P

Regardless, nice post and good luck in the future.

I've actually thought about the grappling off other players before, without the pulling though. It's an interesting idea and one I might end up trying during private testing. The pulling part I'll probably leave out though.

As for powerups pushing players, the speed boosts don't fill that job for you?

Concering team modes; Deathmatch doesn't really make it worth it considering the size of the maps.

Maybe there'll be a team mode someday, but primarily movement based modes will be first, keeping all the teams stuff for last.

I do agree with you on keeping the mod simple.

But on the other hand... there was a certain... plan for player models that would make it perfect to have 3 models of three very basic classes, it'd be mostly things like speed and damage reduction to help support different playstyles.

However with the new models that may not go through.

Thanks for expressing your concerns though!

If scripting wouldn't be limited like you say it's in those games, then I'm all for it ;)

+1 vote   article: Choosing a scripting language
DuckSauce Jan 21 2010, 11:43am says:

I can't help with the decision which scripting language to choose, but I've experienced a bit of two ways of modding.
1. Source, most of the gamecode is part of a C++ solution that you compile, with a couple of "scripts" that's mostly just textfiles being read by the code.

2. Mount&Blade modding, they use Python another scripting language.

The way I experienced it, Mount&Blade was severely limited by allowing the modders to only use scripting. While you could do a nice variety of things really easy with little knowledge of the scripting language, the downside was you were largely limited to that what the developers "allowed" you to do, basically a large part of the gamecode was done with C++ and you didn't have access to it, meaning core parts of the gameplay couldn't be changed because alot of stuff was "hardcoded".

So maybe that was a decision they made, or it had to do with the limits of python that they couldn't do the "hardcoded" stuff with that scripting language. Either way the result is that modding became limited to little to none gameplay changes, gameplay remained that of Mount&Blade, unlike Source where a first person shooter is turned RTS, RPG or a racing game or heck even be turned from 3d to 2d!

So you should also consider how much freedom you're want to and can give modders with the scripting language you choose. If you're gonna do as much "game" code you can with a scripting language and the "engine" code with C++ and the "game" code is what modders will work with, then I'd say choose Lua if it can be reasonably done with it since that's supposed to be easier on people new to that sort of stuff.

If you're gonna let them work with your C++ code and a scripting language, choose that what's similar to C++ so it's also easier for new people as learning 2 new languages is worse than one.

I use a similar approach, just take a look at my profile, the recent video's of the last 2 weeks I have there are part of a new hobbyist project, each time a reach a goal I set out(whether that's expirementation or not) I make a video to show it off and it feels good making progress like this.

Please leave comments like "Kill/Bury yourself" out of this, I've seen no one imply anything that would even suggest fascism.

DuckSauce Mar 19 2011, 8:12am replied:

"There is no Freedom of Speech if we pick and choose which can speak freely"

Which seems to be the case here, I can find nothing in the US constitution at least that proves the right of ModDB to say they're still upkeeping freedom of speech.

Therefore you are in the right there. Touché to you then.
Your fact still remains unproven, but it's no longer relevant, freedom of speech is broken here, because people found it to cross the lines of what's permitted, but this line only seems to exist in what the people made up, not how it is in fact.

So while ModDB does have the right to remove content as they choose legally, this then does not indeed uphold freedom of speech.

So really, +1 to you for winning this argument.

Regardless, my opinion(freedom of speech and opinion eh?) is still that ModDB did the right thing, regardless of keeping in mind those people's freedom of speech or not.

+1 vote   article: Why we removed the school shooter mod
DuckSauce Mar 19 2011, 7:58am replied:

I have done as you say and googled the US Constitution, what I find there is but one reference to freedom of speech, namely in this section:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
grievances. "

No other mentions of freedom relating to this subject, or any mentions regarding crossing the line of freedom of speech. So either all 4 US constitutions I've been looking through are fakes, or it's not in the US consitution, but perhaps somewhere else. For it does seem strange there is nothing about racism, affecting freedom of other others or other cases of what is crossing the line.

So, if what you say is a fact, it's not anywhere in the US consitution that I can see it, so where is this fact written then?

That is your opinion, it is not a fact.
Discriminating a person for skin color, for example: You are speaking freely, but it's discrimination and will not be tolerated.
Does discrimating someone directly affect that persons freedom?

What about insulting a police officer, or anyone for that matter. Real freedom of speech would be saying what you think of that person("I don't like you!") insulting someone is another matter though as police officers can give you a fine for insulting an officer on duty and perhaps worse.

But does that affect their freedom directly?

The answer for both of these is no, you are trying to present your opinion as a fact, I recommend you package it as what it really is.

But perhaps I'm wrong and what you say is true, which would mean freedom of speech is drilled into the ground when it shouldn't, but to prove that, present the actual fact from a credible source.

What I'm saying may not be facts either, but it's how I've perceived them to be in my country, whether these things are right or not.

I'm however not going to hunt down the appropriate facts, the whole point of this is, if you are just giving your opinion, state it as such, what you just said came accross as quoting a fact, but without citing a credible source.

DuckSauce Mar 19 2011, 5:54am says:

Whatever the consequences, I think this was a right step, it's not about it being about killing, media and others will always be using violence in games as an excuse for the flawed moral upbringing and guidance of people's children when they go nuts.

This is about ill intent, the creators of that "mod" were like cinco said above, intent on seeing how far they could push the boundaries and get as much as attention as possible, such behaviour is a disgrace to both modding and gaming developers who may make games with murder or without murder, but are doing so without the intent to drag the reputation of games(and in this case mods) further into the mud.

Free speech is nice and all, but it's limited regardless, discrimination isn't allowed just because there's free speech.

This mod was an attempt to see how far they could push it, they pushed too far and are now facing the consequences and it's not exactly stopping them from continuing their work.

ModDB is like a website hosting service, except it hosts mods and games and other game related content in a different format. Aren't normally those normally asked to shut down sites hosting things like child porn?

I can't imagine they're not, there's a limit to what is acceptable to put up for hosting, the line was intentionally crossed here and ModDB took action after being pressured to do so.

There will likely be consequences, but there would be too if they did not take action, whatever they'd choose to do, they'd have people pointing their fingers at them, but I think they did the right thing in giving the developers a good hint that what they're doing is not acceptable.
