Spoon feeding

drgnzach Blog

One thing that I dislike about some games is that they feel the need to spoon feed the story to the player.
Instead of ranting on about how games do it wrong, I'm going to praise a game for doing something right.
Well, it goes without saying, that the Half-Life series is, while waaaaaay to long to be released, is an incredible series. One of the things I love about it is its tenancy to have an excellent story, but makes you figure it out on your own, but at the same time, doesn't force you to. The way it does this is that it gives hints to whats going on, but doesn't outright state them. For example, when you are driving to Nova Prospekt, you drive down a beach road, but on that beach road you pass by ships that you can tell that haven't been in the water for years, it then has you climb a dock, the only thing is, the dock is about a quarter of a mile from the sea AND is A LOT higher than sea level, eliminating the possibility the of it just being low tide. That leaves the player wondering, that is if they have truly been paying attention, "Where in gods name did all the water go?" One possible answer is that the Combine have been sapping Earths resources for their own purposes, but there is no way of knowing for sure, but that in itself, I find fun to ponder.
