I'm guessing that you've never played the original mod this is based on, because if you did, you'd know that aside from the top down perspective and the similar sci-fi setting, the two are completely different. Whereas Alien Syndrome was a standard run-and-gun SHMUP, Alien Swarm (for UT2K4 anyway) is very tactical and geared towards cooperative play. I dare anyone to try running through that game like a standard shooter and survive. You won't make it past the room filled with laser mines...if you even get that far.
