I have always had a passion for music and art since an early age and chose not to settle on one particular instrument or canvas but build my knowledge across a wide range of both. Soundtracks and filmscore have always appealed to me; static and moving visuals are superb in their own right, but I could blend the two and change the shape, mood and appearance with one slow or swift enigmatic chord or sequence. An active background of sonics shapes the viewer into a far more deeper understand of what they are watching or interacting with. I have not been unfortunate as I have had tracks released via record labels and have also been hired to score for film and television. I would like though to enter the gaming networks and build a portfolio within this industry - after all I spend most of my time playing these infuriatingly addictive games when I'm not writing music...

EDIT 21/08/2008 After an LONG TIME of being absent due to matters beyond my bloody control I'm back in the UK and in the chair. Well, kind of but im back :p

If your in need of music for your mods, look no further.

I've written for film/tv and had tracks released previously but wish to extend into the gaming networks and mods.

I was tied to writing the music and ambient map levels for Dark Source but alas the project is currently on hold temporarily.

I am now available to write any music that you need. Have a listen in the downloads section and goto Soundclick.com

Drop me an email at david-orrick@hotmail.co.uk or PM me.

I have extensive knowledge in the Vienna Symphonic Library Vsl.co.at

You can only use the music here in your mods under the condition that I am notified and credited for the works. Any music which I compose for your mods must also be accredited. Examples in the downloads section will probably be encoded at a low rate so if you wish to use them drop me a line and I can send you a higher rate mp3/wav file or I can encode to any preference. Thanks!

Current mods I am affiliated with include;

Dark Source

Lord of the Rings Mod for Oblivion

I am also involved in a trance project called hedwerk

Hi there,

I'm very impressed with your stuff. I haven't heard anyone else yet using Orchestral works for mods around here. Do you use Sibelius/Finale? it sounds like you do?

Hiya :)
I tend to use Pro Tools & Cubase far more these days mainly for the better recording stage/production, but I still use Sibelius when I'm penning an idea.

I use Pro Tools a fair bit and have just started using it for brass instruments and about to work on a track with strings in it so I will see how that goes. I have been mainly using Sibelius for orchestral stuff so far so it's going to be interesting to see how it works out.

How exactly do you get your gliss. and trems to sound decent? I find they sound terrible on Sibelius?

Yes they do! tbh its to do with the sounds your using more than anything else but think about attack, decay and release on notes. As I use the vsl (which has every imaginable string sound available)and a vsti called Atmosphere - its not to much of a problem to get the effect I want. I have used Antares auto-tune before though as it has a vibrato you can add!
Probably worth saying here and on a side note, that I use a LOT of layers for each different part of the orchestra and that they are offset timewise by a fraction of a second sometimes milliseconds to capture the effect of a real section in motion. Even the slides and trems would be offset as no orchestra would play something perfectly in time across the board. Production wise strings need a cutoff around the 300hz to sound more natural and dont cook the reverb. Just a touch with a short decay time.

Wow cheers for that. I currently use GPO with a dash of SIR reverb as my main sound set but I will definitely look into VSL.

Just had a look at Atmosphere as well which Sounds good. Is it difficult to use?

Would you recommend anything for brass sounds I currently use the Garritan Big Band set and I think it sounds a bit naff.

Atmoshpere has some very good stock sounds in most synth areas and is a breeze to use. Tbh I cant think of a better sounding orchestral set than the vsl though the prices of the vsl range will reach into thousands and you'll need a whopping hard drive too. If your budget cant go for those check out the Edirols vsti set as there are some very nice string & brass sections there that I use at times if others do not fit - or take a trip to East West's library range too.

Well I work for a Music Software company so I can get them on the cheap. Just looking into it now at the moment. Also been looking at the Spectrasonics - Omnisphere VSTi which looks incredible!

Get them cheap?! omg I wish I'd known that sooner :p, but yeah Omni is a good one too, Spectrasonics make some nice and tidy gear :)

MWinteringham Apr 5 2008, 5:51am replied:

So how do you go about spacing your sounds in accordance to the position of the orchestra. Is it assumed you are sitting in the center of room so therefore the first strings are panned slightly to the right and second strings to the left. And then any brass are timed slightly later as they are further back.

I would love to see an example file in pro tools or a screen shot to see how its done.
