Man, it keeps getting easier and easier to start a model off with the form you want.

First up is Autodesk's Photofly, which generates a model using a series of photographs.

Even with a cheaper point-and-click camera and less-than-ideal lighting, the result it generated still managed to surprise me. It's a complete mess of triangles of course, much like a scan, so I'm in the process of seeing how well it works when retopologized and cleaned up. Eventually I'll move on to sculpting in more detail, correcting the shape, and cleaning the lighting information out of the texture. So far so good though.

ZBrush: Dynamesh

ZBrush 4 Release 2 has been out for a short while now, and I'm really loving some of the new features. It's now even faster to mash a bunch of basic shapes together to get the overall form you want. This is using the same technique I mentioned a while ago, except without doing any manual retopology. Instead just pop it into zbrush, turn on dynamesh, and smooth out the joints. Before long, you're onto the fun part of sculpting.

The funny thing about the models he mentioned is that they are back from the Mech Override project (which failed, but got me Artist International as my American Agency and tons of invaluable contacts to the movie industry.) These models - on the concept section of the gaiamedia website - were done by a professional who makes figurines for Marvel, Lucasarts, etc.
So that was not only a low blow it also shows he cannot tell the difference between artistic work and artsy-fartsy work. I really liked Overdose up to now, but jeez - if they're looking for professional work this kind of attitude is gonna catapult them right back where they came from.

Thank you for defending my view of the model in the Overdose comments. I really don't know what freaked the guy out so much about stating the obvious. One good thing about it is I'll be sure to carefully study anatomy before creating any characters - which isn't my strenght in painting anyways. I like environments better :)

Some people just don't respond well to criticism, even when it isn't their own work. If I were them, even if I didn't have the time or resources to make adjustments to it, the common thing for an artist to do is at least keep it in mind and consider for the next time around. You don't improve by making excuses and thinking everyone else is just jealous. If I forgot to turn perspective on when taking a screenshot in zbrush, I definitely wouldn't hunt through someone's profile to attack their own work in retaliation. Some people just take things too close to the heart though.

Maybe. It really is just mashing together basic shapes at this stage, so I'm not sure how much I can go into it beyond what I posted in the blog
