Hey there im cruckz a student of computer games art. i use this mod db profile to post everything i have done (even the crappy stuff) mainly for me to see how I have progressed over time but it is also nice to get feedback from others so feel free to send me a message :D
I'm on my second year of university at the moment it's great.... well the course at least the actual towns a dump! :P Not been putting anything in to the modding community which is a shame :( im starting my final year project soon but will try to fit in as much work for friends as i can. But the problem i have with mods is that you rarely ever see a final product with mods. so i feel like i do work and the only person who see's it is me . oh well :)
So me and the Vault team have just come back off a holiday in Malta which was Brilliant. I was hoping after a nice relaxing break that the team would dive in and get some work done unfortunately this wasnt the case. The team consists of five people working on it, however i seem to be the only one with anything to show. A few of the guys on the team have 1 or 2 props created. Although to get them to do anything requires me to call them and nag them to do it.(which i hate doing) I dont mind there none productivity it just makes me feel as though i have to rush throught the props i am creating to populate the world. And this makes the whole world a lower quality.
I am still in the stage where i find something new everyday working with UDK. Which is always nice (But at times frustrating)
I had one of the team move into my house so he would be more productive, but i found that after an hours work he followed on to watch 2 hours of youtube. His standard of modeling is great, but his work ethic really grinds on me and having him around makes me less productive. I really want to be in the industry. i feel as though my work is getting to the right standard although i know i have alot to learn.
so iv just finished my first year at university. on the course computer games art which for me was a little too easy as it was just the basics of modeling and mapping which i already know but its only ten grand im in debt now :S!
so iv been thinking of various mod ideas over the year and think i may have a winner but the problem is i need a programmer to see my dream come to life and lets be honest if a programmer has skills they are sure to have a job. so ill probably have a very hard time trying to track one down.
at the moment am working really hard im still working on 1985 creating models i can now compile them which is a plus dont have to wait around to see them in game. Iv also started a little mod team of my own nothing to adventurous but homefully something that will be fun to play through :D
christmas is coming and my wallet is empty which doesn't make any difference because no one was getting presents anyway :P
i am also learning xsi which isn't all that fun it seems to have alot more errors than max or maya but would will also be impresive on my c.v. and if all that wasn't enough im also making tutorials on the internet to help fellow modders!!
so am a modder now! it makes me a little busy but im glad for it im working on the 1985 mod ive only moddeled a weapon and scope so far but im sure we can change that.
im finding it more of a challenge to model with a small poly count, but again i feel this also makes it more fun.
one thing is that i really dont get to see any of my models in game straight away so im quite excited about actually seeing them in game and working.
any how ill post again when we have the beta :D
so today i recruited. i managed to get a mapper a project lead and another modeler i have another 2 possible modelers who are maybe's at this time so am now looking for a coder however again i might be able to get a friend to fill this postistion.
Today i also looked into putting my own props in the source engine, i tried for hours and hours to get this right. first of all i tried direct from 3dsmax 2009 this was unsuccessful. i then tried from 3dsmax to xsi into hl2 this was more succesful, i managed to get an untextured model in althought the model was ten times larger than it was supposed to be and would not change when making alterations to the qc file. i tried for hours to get my model in however again i was unsucessful. not being used to failure this was extremly frustrating however i am told that this is all part of working with the source engine.
on a more creative note I made a Hammer tutorial on how to make a combine forcefield gate and posted it on both mod db and youtube.com. i also figured out how to make zombies climb up and down drain pipe and found how flexible the fast zombies are to work with.
i also created a 2 shotguns in 3dsmax (low and high poly) but due to a crash i lost the uvw unwrap on one so will have to carry on again tommorow.
I hope doing this will stay enjoyable.........but can see hours of frustration and annoyence in the road to come.
So im new to this modding business and i want to get stuck in! but like everything else its not that easy.
i can model well using 3dsmax and can make pretty good single player maps in the hammer editor. However i have had some trouble when trying to combine the two. Putting my own models into my levels i have enough models and uvws to go in but fail when trying to put them in game. i would be happy to just give my models away if somone else could put them in game, all i want is the satisfaction of knowing others will be using them.
run a video tutorial thing on youtube ( www.youtube.com/cruckz ) so that also keeps me entertained and is a great learning tool for myself, as it keeps me upto date on on new features and such in 3dsmax / hammer. how do i have the time to do this well i have taken a year break after doing my A levels and have no job :P
