thechineseroom is the name of a development research project I run at the University of Portsmouth, UK. We're interested in first person gaming - particularly, using mods to explore questions about gaming that you can't answer by just analysing commercial releases or theorising about them.

Right now, it's the old version that's available. Hopefully the remake will be out towards the end of this year

Hiya - no - it's the chines character for room... The name comes from an old AI 'problem' by a guy called John Searle. Don't buy his argument, but it's a great name... :)

Hi everyone. I've had a few mails saying that Korsakovia is broken, which seems to add up with a recent Source update... I'm no coder, so I'll try and have a look over the next few days and see if I can figure out what is going on - and if anyone has any ideas then please let me know! Will fix it as fast as I can

Nope, that's the fault of working to a deadline too short to make bespoke assets - which really stinks... It's a fair cop, it does detract from the mod. And there are places where a relatively small amount of effort would have made the difference, about which I hold my hands up and say 'yep, cocked that up... sorry' :)

Oh ****. Sorry (sidles sheepishly away) - I did have this cranked on mine back home before release to try and make sure this wouldn't happen - but I'm sorry 'bout that...

Yes, Robert is working hard on captions and we have several offers of translations on the table, so fairly soon I'll put out a call detailing local versions and asking for missing translations.

I can live with that. Given that most survival horrors ain't scary on the first time around, two decently freaky runs works for me...

I think the idea of a speedrun is really funny. Hey, anyone played Heavy Rain - there's finally a game out that's slower than Esther!!!!

Hiya - I don't think we have Dutch, so sounds great to me. For reference - I think we currently have French, German, Spanish in the pipeline - someone correct me if that's wrong (majorly disorganised here, may have lost the list of who is doing what....:)

I'm not going there on how long it took to measure out the sound triggers even to this level of limited accuracy. It's quick route to madness and next time I design something this reliant on VOs, I'm opting for a coding solution...

There are currently no lods on any of my models and I havent done a proper optimisation pass at all. However right now I make sure my fps never dip below 100fps on my quad core/ATI 4870 rig with everything at max settings, and on my low spec laptop with a nvidia 9600M, my target is to be able to run it at 1920x1080p with max settings at 40fps. Basically if you can run Left 4 Dead you will be easily be able to run this. There is also a slider option to set the foliage render distance depending on your rig.

Yes, it's Robert Briscoe who is doing the rebuild - just using my account to post updates on progress... he gets ALL the credit for what you are seeing.

The update will be a total rebuild of the environment by Rob. The script will remain the same. There will be new environment details and triggers probably. I'm looking into the possibility of raising money to re-orchestrate the soundtrack too... so it's a pretty substantial revision of the original.

You're in the right place. By stacking the box, you can access the ladder to the walkways. Not quite sure how you triggered the double VO though - if you can PM me with the bits of script that fired, that'd be a real help. Follow the walkways and you should reach a vent shaft to take you through to the next bit of map

Quite a few people have asked about other bits of writing and stuff... so because it's xmas - I've uploaded this novel I wrote - Eugene's Box... you can get it here: www.thechineseroom.co.uk/EugenesBox.pdf

Enjoy it, and feel free to distribute, send me thoughts and feedback, etc, etc. It's a bit rough in places, but better it gets read than sits waiting to be ignored by publishers....

Hiya, we originally had player_clips and you don't even want to know about the kind of grief we got for it... hopefully Rob's rebuild will take care of orientation anf texture issues (from his work so far, texture really ain't gonna be a problem....)... in the script, the narrator talks about phosphoresent moss in the cave...

That voice acting *is* professional! :)

We are looking into trying to raise some money to get live musicians into the audio, but I'm not sure if it's going to be possible. Donations welcome on that score...

Ah, but there is no definitive explanation, that's kind of the point. There are a couple of 'most likely' readings as far as I'm concerned, but I think any explanation is OK...
