The effort is there, but the writing quality isn't. It's also full of graphics pop-in, contrived jump scares, and strange level design that appears non-linear but forcefully says otherwise.
Interesting premise, though for much of this mod you're really not in any danger. You're almost guaranteed to spend most of your playtime in pitch black with no lantern oil, which is quite annoying.
Day Z is one of the most well known and ambitious mods to ever come out. Ironically it did so by abandoning lots of substance, and just dropping players into a Zombie-infected Chernarus with nothing to do but survive. Everything else is up to the player.
It's an interesting concept, and over time they expanded on survival elements quite a bit, but at least the last time I played, there wasn't enough teamwork emphasis. Custom Bandit skins were removed so people could kill others with no penalty, and they'd blend in perfectly. This plus the reduction of the amount of Zombies turned Day Z into Zombie Deathmatch.
OGSE has the potential to be the greatest SoC mod of this caliber. I have confidence that it will take this title one day, but first it needs some improvements.
As expected, OGSE has some serious bugs, but none that crash the game at least. However, quest-related AI tend to not move to their destinations, effectively breaking quests.
Another problem is the atmosphere. For some reason, the game is over-saturated and it is impossible to get a perfect balance between saturation and brightness. Although it has some unrivaled graphics features, such as sunshafts and tall grass, the general shader quality is bested by STALKERSOUP, which really captures the dark and unforgiving atmosphere of the Zone.
This mod is horribly unbalanced at times, mainly in X-16 in which the timer is set impossibly low. You'd have under a minute to get to a switch, but 2-3 Burers and much more zombies are in your path. There's just no way to get this done, so I had to edit the script and change the time. Of course, I would expect the time to be longer if you got the measurements with Kruglov, but due to bugs, Kruglov wouldn't move so I had to kill him to advance the game.
I'm not sure what went through the minds of the devs when implementing sentry turrets. They have absolutely no place in the Zone, and they don't even make sense judging by the model (it's just a mounted machine gun that automatically shoots you). These also make some parts of the game extremely annoying.
On the flip side of the coin, the SkyGraphics features are unrivaled, and tweakable in a separate application. It also adds some of the best gameplay features, such as lots of new scripts including food spoiling, detectors, vehicles, walkie talkie with channels, equipment repairing, improved A-Life, cut mutants, etc.
Very good level designs, although one possible game-breaking bug exists.
