Did you ever play Abe's Odyssey? It had a really effective communication system for interactions between the player character and npcs.

I think most exposition was handled through scene settings along with some scripted events, although I could be wrong as I haven't played it since release.

I don't think you need to make hutman mandatory unless he's providing some sort of clue for latter parts of the game. I was happy listening to him and just wanted to point out that choosing to go out the back would load the next area, cutting him off, which I hadn't expected.

billyboob Feb 2 2011, 6:26pm replied:

I'm not so interested in moral choice type games. I thought your idea was fantastic as a means of showing historical and economic processes that so many real time strategy and role playing games fail at.

There are any number of 'simple' game ideas coming out of this conflict that could be designed in a conventional manner i.e. say a tower defense game - build and maintain barricades with your neighbours to protect your community from attacks by pro-regime police (just like they did in Tunisia).

Moral choice type games strive to be something they cannot because they are designed and built in conventional game structures that define how real those choices are. For the most part they are utterly superficial because they generally only consist of alternative narrative elements which only prolong the game itself by having people play the game repeatedly or in a different manner to their original method in order to be rewarded with an alternate ending or two.

I think an alternative to this method of game development that would present people with 'real' moral choices would be a game where you have to convince the inhabitants of the game world of an idea. How batshit insane would that be? Thats what i'd like to see.

Abe's Oddysee for Playstation. Gorgeous artwork, intuitive gameplay, mad laughs and immensely fun. For the first time I didn't feel like I was playing a flat/linear time trial platformer. I'd played alex the kid, mario, sonic and they were fun but afterwards i felt nothing. As Abe I was leading a rebellion, inspiring my people, helping them. I had a goal, a purpose. And I just read that a HD release for PC is being worked on!

I should add that Desura was developed to know the default directory that mods should be installed to, so for Source mods, Desura will install the mod to the correct path by default and the game will show up the next time you start Steam. If your Steam directory is in a different path you can choose to install it there. So you don't even have to bother adding the game manually to Steam like I mentioned above.

+3 votes   article: Half-Life 2: Wars Beta 2.0.0 Released!
billyboob Sep 25 2012, 9:41pm replied:

You only have to use the client for installation and patches. It doesn't need to run in order for you to play the game. It uses your ModDB account as it is run and developed by the same group of people. If you're so inclined you can add the game to your Steam library and launch it from there. Desura is less obtrusive then Steam as it doesn't require any background process or services to be active for you to play your games. So i'm not sure what your issue is with using a great service that comes in at about a whopping 35MB or so installation.

Well that's not so great news. I'd be interested to know the success rate of gaming projects on indiegogo compared to kickstarter. If it doesn't come through perhaps a switch of crowdfunding sites and relaunch of the appeal?

Also, I'm a bit confused about the 4th part of the funding goals - Making it DRM free. Is it possible to release Source engine games without the need for Steam (considering that is a form of DRM)?
