Ok great game-project and nice comic, but are you going to make a newspost for every comic page that gets released?

Don't get me wrong, I really like the work you guys do, and you deserve some media attention
but newsposts about comics is not mod/indie game related. I'd rather not have all the mod related news get bumped down for webcomic news and 5 newspost about the same "organic indie pack" was not needed either.

It's not getting me more excited about the game and the development of it, on the contrary.
Please keep things like this for profile news, so that people who really care and "watch" the game see it, but not for the front-page.

I had no problems with it, ofcourse you need some skill and have to learn it, but that didn't take a lot of time and effort for me. It's a twitch-based game and learning how to fly and land a spaceship is part of the gameplay.
Anyway, I remember InfinityAdmin say something about a possible "auto-landing" system for those who want it, but I'm not sure thats still planned.

Betelgeuze May 21 2009, 5:38am replied:

Yeah something like that, and there's a big difference between randomly generated and procedurally generated.
From the FAQ:

Procedural generation is not at all the same than random generation. In fact, it's pretty much the opposite: it's all about recreating the same data providing the same inputs. "Seeds" numbers are given to objects, so as long as an object has the same seed than before, it will be recreated exactly like before, with the exact same details, down to the millimeter level.
Synchronization between multiple players is ensured by making the server transfer the same object's seed to all players who are able to see or interact with this object. So all players will see the same procedurally generated object, like a planet, with the same details.

Yes this is a video of the Combat prototype, this is not what the real game will be like.

"This is a completely separate program that only shares the engine. It does not represent what you will find in Infinity. Its goal is, namely, to test: the graphics engine, the physics engine, the networking engine, experiment with controls / combat mechanics / balance, to improve stability/fix bugs and measure/stress performance.

The combat prototype is not meant to have a deep gameplay; do not expect any form of planetary landing. 10 ships are available to the players. The gameplay is arena (team vs team) based, while Infinity will be a fully open "sandbox" type of game. "

Maybe you to forgot check the description under the image? Those are Hephaestian textures and we have one example of a Hephaestian world in our solarsystem: Io(moon of Jupiter).
Io itself looks very 'unreal', its one of the most active worlds in the solarsystem and is a mix of different bright colors:

We only have one example of a world like this in real-life and we don't have any good close-up pictures of it, so I had to use my inspiration for this texture pack. Before I started working on this pack I did some research of course, personally I'm I'm happy with the results. I tried to give them an organic/chemical look, the textures are smoother and more reflective than most other terrain textures I made for Infinity.

Keep in mind that you only see 2 random textures, every texture pack has around 10 textures.

And please trust me, I've been working on planetary textures for Infinity for more than a year now, it's been my main job for Infinity. Ofcourse I look at pictures, ofcourse I do research, ofcourse some of those textures are strongly based on real planetary pictures from NASA and other space agencies.

I'm not the only one who had a complaint about the news post and I stated my opinion as a moddb visitor never as an Infinity member. It's sad to see you see my opinion about the news post as an act of jealousy and boycott from Infinity. I clearly stated multiple times that I like the project and am always happy to read news post about the development of the game. Never did I mention Infinity in all of this, and its not because Im managing the Infinity profile on moddb that I shouldnt be able to state my honest opinion about things on moddb.
Instead of discussion it in a mature manner with me you take it on a personal level and say I’m someone who don’t follows his "promises”, call me "jealous" and "angry" and feel you have to contact the Infinity team instead of me. Therefore I take this as a personal attack on me.
I've decided to resign from the Infinity moddb team(im not even part of the dev team), to make clear that this has nothing to do about them, and I don't want to get them involved in it further. I will talk to the moddb crew about this and I will contact you in private about this too!
I accept nothing less than your apologies to me and to the Infinity team, not for disagreeing with what I said about the newspost but for getting Infinity involved in this, which has clearly nothing to do with this!

Thats all I have to say about this in public, If you feel the need to insult me even more and or just want to have a normal discussion, you can always contact me: alphaorionis01(at)

They made the promise to the people who care, that’s why there's an option to show the news post for people who "watch" your project on moddb. For other gamer’s modders and developers this is not interesting or relevant to what they hope to find on moddb.
And because I don’t like to see relevant news being bumped down by pinkbeard news you conclude I don’t hold promises? I do, I just don’t post them on a website about mods and game development. Its not because I feel it’s a good idea to make a promise about something that this makes it relevant to be front-page news.

So making a complete news post for every web comic page that gets released is front-page worthy in your opinion? For me its not, but I'm sure its great for the people who "watch" the project (again use that option) In the ends its also possible to make a news post about it when the full comic is finished, instead of doing it for every page.

And yes I would rather have it the Black Mesa Source way who don’t try to get in the spotlight every single day and still manage to get a large fan base and win awards on this website. At least they don’t bump down all the other news and still manage to impress people.

There is no way any project manages to have something front-page news worthy every day, yet you guys manage to get on top of the news almost every day, and you clearly start to notice that in the news subjects. I don’t really care if there’s a news post about a web comic, or one about pixel art, its just that it all starts building up with more and more of those kind of news posts and its starting to annoy me a bit. Still the news post about the actual development of the game are always very interesting and great to read/see.

Betelgeuze Jan 23 2010, 6:27am replied:

I did, still don’t see why it has to be posted on the front-page of moddb as Overgrowth news.
As someone already mentioned a couple of news posts ago, I also start to get the feeling they try to get on top of the newspage every day! I wouldn't care if it was actual real news about the game, but news so far have been about a pink beard, pixel art, web comics and 4 or 5 news post about the same 'organic' game pack you could buy. For those things there’s an option to post news for people who watch the game only, this shouldn’t be on the front-page. I see no other game or mod do this and I hardly see any other game or mod on the top of the front-page everyday!

I think Overgrowth is an amazing project but I rather not have the other mod/indie news get bumped down every day by stuff like this.
@ moddb crew: is there a way I could filter out Overgrowth news or something?

Well since you plan to promote your puzzle mod by making us "think" I hope you can make the regular teasers/updates interesting enough to keep us puzzling with them. The first one looks very cool and intriguing already!
You've got my attention! ^^

Good luck with the project!

Only keeping comments you like, and deleting all the others is not going to give you a lot of fans. It's called "freedom of speech", what you do is "censoring". Have you ever seen any other serious developer do this? Deleting comments from people, just because you don't like them, will make people angry, you feed the trolls! If you don't want comments on your work, just don't show it to the public or don't use an open-community like moddb!
Start closed-development and when you are ready sart closed testing to get your feedback. In concept stage thats not needed anyway.

Yes this is my "feedback", but since its probably feedback you don't like its going to be deleted I guess?

It's not a mod. And no, no new videos.
Most of the work being done now is less eye-candy related

Yeah but it feels a bit arrogant, to me.
I can understand projects making newsposts during this period especially to get some extra votes (I've done it too). But actually asking for it in the newpost and making it the newspost title is just not done imo (it's even in the thumbnail image!), those projects never get my vote.

Not all the ships that get made for infinity will make it into the game. Also we have a lack of good texturers to give all those ships a nice texture, This is becoming a bit of a problem!

So we don't have that many finished ships for the game.

Well it’s still a tool just like the tools we modders have been using for years. The difference is this tool is so easy use that everyone can work with it. Does that make it less 'modding'? Where do we draw the line exactly? Is modding based on how difficult the tools are to use?

I see that you make a link with character creation you see in lots of games but it’s different. It’s a lot more complex and flexible and the creations are used in other people’s games and not restricted to your own game.

It’s funny but interesting to see that the line between modding and character creation is becoming very vague

Quote:But wot are the aims of land going to be in ur mainly space game may i ask??

You will spend a large amount of time on the planets so ofcourse there will be a lot to do.
ex: You will be able to explore the surface of all the planets(minus gas giants) and it will be possible to find cities, ruins, primitive alien lifeforms,...
Space ships will be able to fight on the planets and we might add some ground vehicles too.

Quote:Very nice, there are a few touchups to be made I am sure so great job.

Thanks and yes its all work-in-progress. The rendering of water is extremely basic at this point, we've only created a simple shader that generates a per-pixel water normal by blending together 4 normal maps coming from perlin noise fBm.
