Look, I do have a very deep respect for the MERP team, so I'm not trying to take anything away from the project. I'm just being realistic (I think). Anyway it sounded an awful lot as a lament there, but as it evidently was not, I take back my previous comment :) No hard feelings, we're all Tolkien fans after all.
Well, someone is being overly dramatic. MERP would have been but a great game with a great fantasy world for a theme, not much more than that. You can romanticize all you want about it, but in the end it's just a project you and I thought was great, being ended by a big company which thought that it wasn't so great (for them at any rate). Just business as usual it seems to me, nothing all thát special about it. It's not the end of the world, nor the end of the MERP team, so let's just move on and look ahead of us, instead of backwards...
I never wanted to. Then some moron stumbles in trying to enlight us with his idiocy. Anyway, long story short: you won't be fighting a balrog as it will utterly destroy you.
So I was wrong. You indeed are a troll (or so I hope). Well, good job on ******* us off. Now bugger off and go find someone else to annoy...
What cowboymodgod said... And "don't act smart anymore"? What on earth did you expect from the community supporting a lotr mod? That we haven't even seen the damn films?! Also the irony of that statement is beyond stellar 0.0 So you must be a very clever and effective troll, or a complete ******* that roams the internet and makes bold statements about everything that he knows jack **** about... I suppose it is the latter.
I would like to see you battle a balrog as a man of Gondor or Rohan. I guess I do have to bring an umbrella though, to protect myself from raining bodyparts. So yeah, you wouldn't stand a chance... For the record, Fëanor, the mightiest elf that ever lived, was killed by the wounds inflicted upon him by Gothmog, a balrog (although he was the most powerful balrog).
Shut up and take my money :P But seriously, I would pay you guys for your efforts in MERP alone ;)
I wonder which epic fantasy tale isn't in some way or another inspired by LoTR :)
Yes, you will see this soon. There, now you still know nothing. Don't ask silly questions...
Yeah, I really have to start tearing this page out of my daily internet routine. It's going to be a long and hard process, but I'll get there :) Maybe a moddb page for Lays of Althas will help me in doing so (hint, hint ;) )
Haha, considering the nature of the events that tend to happen in Westeros, it would seem that trying to prevent said infamous event would lead to another even worse outcome for all the actors involved :) Of all places Westeros would be the last location i'd visit :P
If the problem is located in the source code, there's not much modders can do, I'm afraid (unless they get acces to it somehow). Anyway, I'm glad Lays of Althas will be on the cryengine. I'm very curious what Team Epoch can do with it :) Also 3/2 = 1,5 ;)
Yes and what to think of Enderal and perhaps Ethas (don't know what the size of their heightmap is going to be). I hope Bethesda will take the time to fix this, otherwise we can say goodbye to every large Skyrim overhaul mod out there...
As TheLastSilmaril said, it's going to be unlike Nehrim in the sense that it is not a mod of an existing game, but instead a game itself. So it's basically going to be a free indie :)
yes, it will be free. That has already been stated by Nuvendil :)
ha ha, fair point ;)
The protest against the counterclaim by WB was dismissed. So now there actually two lawsuits running between the TE and WB... But it doesn't really matter much anymore. Now we can start some proper modtracking without all the C&D nonsense :)
I'm not really feeling down. I'm just glad you guys can finally get on with doing what you love to do again. This awesome team has been idle for too long ;)
^ This. I always end up buying awesome games, but WB can suck my d... finger, if they think I am going to buy their ******** now that MERP is shut down. So much for their idea of eliminating competition. They can't really compete against the customer, can they? :)
And here we are, ready for another modding/modtracking adventure. I sure hope this one has a happier conclusion ;)
Sad to see my lack of faith (the last few months) in a good outcome for MERP was justified.
But, Cryengine you say? Own IP you say? That sounds very good to me, indeed. So I will hopefully meet everyone in the comment section for Lays of Althas (perhaps as a contributor of sorts) :)
And that's all it takes, really. Pressure and time.
What on earth do you study? Your topics range from English bachelor stuff to game design material? Concerning advice I'm not much use, I think, as I study Biology. I have succesfully finished my Bachelor's thesis though, so here's what I got for you :)
The first subject seems good to me. But would you solely use LoTR for those theses, or would you incorporate the rest of his M-E related work too?
The second topic does seem very broad, so I would advice you to narrow it down a bit. Finding information accounts for some 60% percent of the work (or that's the rule of thumb for Biology), so if your topic is too broad, you won't have enough time for writing (or you'll have to work very hard indeed :) ). Also more focussed topics allow for sharper conclusions and inferences. Then again I don't know what the consensus on this is for your study.
That's all I had, good luck and godspeed ;)
Well, goodnight from The Netherlands ;)
Because Christopher would probably shut MERP down faster than WB could yell 'MONEY'
That is a nice idea, although I have a hunch that that has been considered by the team already. But I would easily pay 50-100 bucks to make MERP happen.
It's funny how, when a moddb page is a little neglected, the most ignorant people start to collectively stumble in, all asking the most stupendous questions. The last ten pages of the comments pretty much all contain at least one 'release date comment'.
Aside from that I just wanted to say that the mod looks awesome and I can't wait to play it, although you should ofcourse take your sweet time polishing it :)
That has already been considered by them and it wouldn't work...
They are no professional development team. People come and go on a regular basis. If they would go underground, it wouldn't be possible to recruit new team members (or it would be really hard), while actual team members would be able to leave the project (for whatever reason). Therefore it is very hard to maintain a large anonymous modding team. And even if this would work, there is the problem of communication and keeping the mod synced for everybody...
Yes, so may I convert that saying into this: "If you actively want to get your *** sued, you are fully liable for the ruination of your own life". That indeed applies nicely here and explains why the MERP team prefers a much more subtle approach. Another way of explaining it would be: "I have lost faith in the MERP team, so I will put my money where my mouth is and finish this project myself".
Yes, Middle-Earth is an epic fantasy universe with lots of potential for games like this. Is it worth putting your real-life *** on the line for? Hell no, not in a million years. Now, don't tire me with corporate greed and consumers have to stand up for themselves ********, for we've passed that station a long time ago. If WB backs out now, they will lose all their credibility. So indeed, unless the team has something brilliant planned (which I deem very plausible), MERP will never be released. But I'm sure such a talented team will be able to create a great new mod with its own universe and story.
