I'm a game artist from Perth, Australia. I recently started my own company with a friend to create games for ios and android after finishing my degree a few months ago. More on the new company to come soon!

First blog post!
I though I might make a quick post as to why I've invested the money to become a registered company for creating and releasing games. I know of plenty of individuals releasing games under their own names and am sceptical of this. Of course you avoid some start up costs and you also get to avoid alot of confusion but you miss out on alot. To be honest though registering my company then sorting a company constitution as well as shareholder agreements and distribution of wealth and so on has been a headache! It's all worth it in the end though...
Creating a company allows me to create a brand as well as protects myself in the event of legal issues with intellectual property law or other areas. As a company I have limited liability which is a weight off in unlikely event I accidentally stepped on somebodies toes or ending up losing money. It also provides clever ways for me to invest in the company as well as more favourable tax rates and methods of distributing wealth.
I'm not doing this to simply make money I'm doing this because making games is what I want to do for a living. However in the 1 in 100 chance we end up making some decent money it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Both my business partner and I are relatively inexperienced at making actual games (I'm a self proclaimed character artist myself) but sometimes if you want chances in the industry you have to make them... especially in Perth... If all goes well, great! If not at least I got some valuable experience and time to develop my portfolio.
At any rate more to come soon. Once I get in to the marketing side of things I'll probably make another blog post detailing that process. Hopefully this blog can become my sort of guide on how to... or not to... create an indie game startup. Let's find out!
Cheers
Nath
